Petit Le Mans
Americans Le Mans Series 2012
Published by Pat W
Petit Le Mans only began in 1998 and is already established as one of the world's great races. The picturesque yet narrow Road Atlanta track provides the perfect setting whilst remaining a challenge for all. No longer a round of the ILMC/WEC, so there's no Audi or Toyota, it isn't a US-only affair. The WEC team Rebellion Racing are taking the opportunity to bring an LMP1 car to race for the overall win against the ALMS regulars. As well as a full ALMS grid we'll also see some ELMS teams from Europe competing in LMP2. In drivers, Dario and Marino Franchitti team up, Martin Brundle's son Alex is here, so is Brendon Hartley. And what's more - the Delta Wing will be making its 2nd race appearance. The race lasts for 1000 miles or 10 hours, 42 cars on a short twisty track, this race practically guarantees drama every season. With no Audi/Toyota whitewash and an unreliable LMP1 field the race is completely open. You'd be mad to miss it.

Hello. Qualifying starts in a little over an hour, but if I don't appear it is because I had another power cut. Just had one for a few seconds. Hopefully it'll all be fine..
Thanks for putting the thread up earlier for qualifying :)
Thank you for writing it :)
what are our streaming options this weekend? time to fork out for eurosport?
Those of us outside the US can get it all for free at www.alms.com and I think it is on MotorsTV.
I don't know how much of the race ESPN in the US are covering live, it'll all be on ESPN3 which is one of those 'must have the right ISP' deals.
They've just announced in the last hour that the 2013 Sebring and Petit races will be on Fox Sports (ex-SPEED) in the US which will be interesting.
So yes the Delta Wing is back, but it had a crash on Wednesday: www.youtube.com/w…&feature=plcp
You might remember in 2009 Highcroft Racing did that awesome timelapse video after they crashed in practice: www.youtube.com/w…tch?v=gzKfCIY_zfg
Well guess who is running the Delta Wing.. and they've made another one: www.youtube.com/w…&feature=plcp
brilliant. ta!
coooooooool!
interesting how few mechanics there are working on it.
Yeah you'd think they might have an Audi/Toyota-size crew with Nissan behind them. but this is more normal for ALMS. Wonder if some were rested.
half the people compared to the highcroft vid tho.
Ah yes

Live now - www.alms.com/came…ra/live-broadcast
yay!
ipad friendly. OH YESH!
alms on the telly.
They've allotted 1hr15m for qualifying but that's broken up into groups. I'm assuming 2 x 30 mins with a break. The GT cars are going to go first. The LMP cars go later.
Oh if you have an X-box there's a feed there too somewhere
Evening all (both).
Am watching without sound atm.
hey chap
Evening.
Good timing - Green flag for GT/GTC classes.
I've been waiting for some action to start :)
I am here. Not sure who I'm cheering for though.
I'm running it through my VGA cable. Dual-screen PC and the left screen is my telly. :)
#slightlyoldschoolversion
Me either - depends which paint job is best. Unless anyone has any better thoughts...
are all alms races streamed like this? might be worth selling a kidney and going all in for hd coverage. this is amazing.
Ryan Hunter-Reay is in a Dodge Viper but that's a new program not up to speed yet.
Dario Franchitti and his bro Marino are in a black Level 5 LMP2 car #055
Yes.
wow. we should do more.
They are also archived. I watched the 2011 Road America race on Wednesday through the site.
Brendon Hartley and Bertrand Baguette are also entered
I think Ryan will have that one covered. I like the idea of brothers racing, but I am looking through the field for other names I recognise.
Was trying to remember where I knew Jonathan Summerton from, but we think it was US F1?
Patrick Dempsey off the telly is in the #27.
There's a software developer called David Heinemeier-Hanson who is apparently famous (?), he's in the Conquest LMP2 #37 and he's quite good.
Ok apparently Q this is GTC only
He's driving a Lotus in Austin this weekend apparently.
That'll be Mr C's then :)
I think I will go for the Bertrand Baguette car, but mostly because there's another guy with a pink helmet in there, and pink = Franck.
Yes I think so. He was around Europe for a while, can't remember what he drove. Tweeted a LOT about something 'gonna happen soon about a race seat, gonna happen soon' for about a year. So I unfollowed him. Then he signed with BMW.
:)
Can't wait to see Mario Andretti driving.
happy with that.
Alex Job Racing take GTC pole. The least interesting class is out of the way. :) Close racing but slowest and all the same cars.
GT class out now, this could be more fun
What's the different between GT and GTC?
GT is open to anyone so we have Ferrari, Porsche, BMW, Dodge, Corvette. They have bigger engines and custom tyres from anyone they want.
GTC is Porsches only, smaller engines but decent straightline speed, spec Yokohama tyres. Cost-effective way to start racing before moving up to GT.
GT has the same rules as the WEC or Le Mans, but the ALMS version is the closest anywhere and the races are crazy close.
Thanks! That's been bugging me for a while. ;)
Most of the GT teams are on Michelins now. You'll see a little company called Falken which nobody had heard of before, they run a Porsche in blue/turqouise and they've been getting faster and faster.
Olly Gavin did a Twitter Q&A the other day, he said when Chevy Corvette switched from Goodyear to Michelin they realised why they kept being beaten!
am just stunned at this coverage. how can it be so good and free.
!!
it they charged a fiver a race it'd still be worth it. we've paid more for eurosport and the coverage is crappy and the app crashes repeatedly.
The only complaint is it isn't available for free in the US.
My feed is a little stuttery but I guess that's for processor/OS reasons. Ah no. It's in Flash, that's why. :)
stick it on the ipad!
^easy
I can't get it on my TV through that.
damnit!
No such luck 'borrowing' an IP then
Look at the silver paint jobs on those Ferraris, that's brilliant, they are usually black and bright green
And they lock out the front row too.
ESM Ferrari front row, BMW 3rd, then the two Corvettes.. Top 9 inside 0.9s
There's probably a cable to do it with? Or do I have to buy an Apple TV?
depends how you're connecting it. this maybe?
store.apple.com/u…apple-vga-adapter
we have an ipad to hdmi cable you can have, but you'll need a new telly.
Ooh I didn't know they existed. Thanks will look into it.
The plan was to save up for a brand new one but then Dad bought me this 2nd-hand. Flatscreen with lots of SCART sockets and a VGA but still old. Still want a new one.
PC class is Prototype Challenge which is basically the prototype equivalent of GTC, entry level. So all the cars are ORECAs and all the engines are Corvettes.
Which class is this event's big-boys?
P1. There are only 4 of them though, and one of those is a guest car. Rebellion brought their spare car from the WEC (they actually raced it in the WEC at Sao Paulo 3 weeks ago).
still on the lookout for best livery. any favourites?
The thing about ALMS is it is opposite to Europe. In the ALMS they get a lot of good GT entries and in Europe we don't see many as they race somewhere else. In the ALMS there aren't many prototypes but in Europe we see loads.
www.spotterguides…12_PLM_SG_V31.jpg #12 #45 look nice :)
The chrome/silver Ferrari. :)
The Lotus Evora looks good in JPS Lotus colours.
taking the f1 approach to qualifying :)
#keepitlean
The vodka-y one - yeah :)
I'll agree with that one as well :)
Tequila.. although I've never had tequila (that I recall..)
Polesitting Marcelli out of fuel
Red flag to recover that car.. but he's moving again?
It looked alcohol-y - Tequila is nice :) Worth trying once, although it's not a 'casual' drink.
Now saying an engine breaker popped out..
Next one should be the final session for P1 and P2 cars plus the Delta Wing. Several guest P2 cars from Europe/ELMS will make that a race to watch tomorrow.
ahh, wasn't fuel? let them off then.
Yeah if it was a car problem that's understandable.
dario!
Lots of respect for Rebellion for racing their spare here. :) Love it.
Lucas Luhr quick.
Alex Brundle and Brendon Hartley battling for LMP2
love it :)
w00t deltawing
Do they have to run >1 driver for Quali?
No they got that out of the way in free practice. Last night each driver had to run in the dark just like Le Mans, so they are free now to go for times.
Ahha cool - I thought they all needed to run at some point, so FPs explains it :)
that was fun. catch y'all tomorrow for the race.
Neel Jani takes pole for Rebellion :)
Lucas Luhr 2nd for Muscle Milk. Dyson 3-4.
Olivier Pla wins LMP2 pole for OAK. Plowman 0.002s behind for Conquest. I lost timing so I missed where the Franchittis are.
Delta Wing 10th overall.
3rd
Enjoyed it, seemed to fly by, :)
Will probably switch to iPad tomorrow as I'd fallen a minute or so back already.
The race will be good tomorrow in most of the classes. Cheers for the interest. :)
GT pole-winning car (ESM chrome Ferrari) failed a ride-height check in post-qualifying scrutineering, so I presume they'll start at the back.
@GuyCosmo 4 mins
Never mind. Failed post-qual tech. Splitter support broke & measured a millimeter or two too low. Scrap that new record! Starting last now.
Race Day!
Streaming begins on alms.com in 25 minutes.
The feed should be up but I'm getting errors - http://t.co/1FAV4y1K
Took me 5 mins to get there, but it's now running
looks like it's under a lot of load. damnit.
I've got it working on desktop but iPad won't load.
I imagine *everyone* has hit F5 or equiv when that timer hit 00:00.00!
ESPN3 feed is up, thank goodness. I was getting nervous. Already got up early, got allergy medicine and made chili. Now couch and Petit for the duration.
Oh, and hi. :)
Up and running now, on the ipad now, quality is much better there! Will have to take the smaller screen.

Green
I can't be on a delay already?
Green...
now
I do like the flowingness of this track :)
Delta Wing started last, I missed the reason. Presumably to avoid more contact!
I missed the reason, too. Just saw tweet last night from Gunner to Guy Cosmo saying "no, I'm last, not you."
Great track. Bit dangerous in places though. :)
I always forget how quick it is and how short it is.
I love it, too...so much.
ah, unclassified car, not running for a prize, that's why.
Ah that makes sense. Save the car.
and maybe the driver, based on that bad crash, though he was totally fine.
and get out of the way of others who are going for a championship.
Good idea
Already overtaken all the GT class cars :)
Go Gunnar! I like him, he's an unusual guy.
LMP1 guys already lapping the top GTs. Really short track.
...so this finishes at 0030 (latest)??
More like 0200.
Thought it was 10hrs max :
Yes. 10hrs is 0230. :) They should beat that.
Dammit - confused my 24hrs-clocks, and I was trying so hard ;)
Dirk in the gravel,. he's out of it. No brakes, ouch, not there!
*out of the gravel not out of the race
Those M3s looked SO good going around Lime Rock. So fast. Love the way they moved on the track.
He's missed up the perfectly furrowed gravel
Brake caliper change front right on Mueller's car.
oh man!
haha
#priorities
metal rim on asphalt, not a sound you want to hear.
Look at the grass in the grill of the viper.
Hindy "world's biggest engined grass cutter" hehe
Go Townsend Bell. Wishing him well today. Lots of car development this year.
He good to see him racing. Great looking car. Not been fast in Europe but it looks like this team are working well with it. They don't seem in a hurry to fix it?
He was clear that this was to get the team and car in shape this year. I missed the full pit stop. Did he get going again?
I'm a little surprised at the Dyson cars falling behind lead LMP2, even if it is Marino driving the class leading car :)
I think they are still there
"Shine ya windows guvna?!"
Fuel only. One way to get to the front. :) Double-stinting the tyres.
i got delayed. what have i missed?
About 39 laps of round and round :) but other than that I don't have the details.
Delta Wing started last but got up 14th.
Lead two cars going at it like crazy. :) They pitted and switched around and there's a gap for now.
We're just at the end of the first pit sequence for LMP cars. GTs should be in soon.
Marino leads LMP2. Corvette in front in GT.
iPad feed perfect by the way.
w00t! am just getting plugged in.
After all P stops, they're 10th.
ooooh, it looks so good.
That delayed ESM Ferrari made it up to 5th so they're quick, still in it.
love drivers where different coloured gloves to help identify them.
Remember the web feed has a series of onboard cameras on the left of the main feed. :)
I tend to leave it on the main one.
i need more devices!
Is that your motto? ;)
I like how they put his Twitter-@ as a caption
Hard to see out of the car seems like something that should've been worked out?
Lucas Luhr off! Boo!
R-Front looks poorly
luhr off!
Stay clear of those green Porsches, folks. And Luhr put himself in a bad spot.
i may be a fraction behind ya :)
I was playing with onboards and I missed it
yup :)
He took an evil little tap to the rear
exit of pit lane. Want to see a replay to get a better sense of what happened.
you need more devices too.
all I have is my little MBP, so count me in on more devices!
May have to turn the netbook on.. is that overkill? :)
no such thing.
Looks like his steering to that wheel has gone
if your bandwidth can handle it, do it :)
have you got spc comments tucked to one side, or are ya alt-tabbing?
Yeah I'm not sure about that!
right side stream, about 4x5 in, then comments on left, half screen. Email and twitter on tabs with comments. T & S would be nice, too, to keep track. Should open a tab for that.
@RACERmag 2 mins
For those wondering, that's the same driver in the Green Hornet GTC that contacted the #DeltaWing earlier this week.
great driver!
He can't see crap out the right side of his car, clearly, and is not aware of faster, lower cars coming up on him. And they said Luhr shouldn't have been there. I don't know the track well enough to say.
I might suggest that the GH was slightly unsighted on that one
And by unsighted I really mean that he didn't look
hehe
sighting does require looking, so that fits. :)
I think he was looking at the other Porsche. I'd argue Luhr should've waited, he had wheels on the grass.
didn't know drivers needed to stay within 10m of car.
"I'm ON the car" Luhr. haha
cool! super-thin comments in a separate window works well, but not with twitter too :)
sidepodcast.tumbl…imline-commenting
yeah, half screen works just fine. I just want a screen about 5 times as big.
I don't check twitter much during the race. I rely on you guys for that. :)
That ruined a great race.
i JUST got here!
bah.
I need a 1.5x-widescreen - for all the windows to be lined up nicely :) Until then it's ALT+Tab & CTRL+Tab
Yeah they were just focussing on GTs doing their stops when you came in, before that they spent a while watching a close battle for leaders.
Ah well we still have the other classes.
Couldn't fully remember if Green Hornet driver was also moving around another car when he hit the Delta Wing.
blogs.wsj.com/dri…=google_news_blog
Seems he was making a move to go around another Porsche with the Delta Wing, too.
Maybe he has a special vision impairment that only allows him to see Porsches. Either that or his race awareness is horrendous.
one thing you can do to make onboard video smaller, is zoom out in your browser window.
something like ctrl + the minus key should do it.
gooo deltawing :)
Apparently he's a rich guy with not very much race experience. His money paid to run the car and for a pro like Faulkner to join him in the team. There's got to be a limit though, some experience required?
if they're streaming the whole season next year, we should live comment more.
Taking out 2 prime/high interest competitors will hopefully teach him a lesson. If he's not reflective, someone should have the stones to tell him to get out of the car, or go back and practice in SCCA for a bit. These are the big boys here.
... But Patrick Dempsey's getting on ok yeah?
haha
Love Luhr. I knew he'd say that. :))
heheheheeh!!
They have done it for a couple of years, had a few 'issues' with reliability but it's been getting better. I saw Sebring, Long Beach and Lime Rock live on it.
it used to be flash only streaming though. never had it on the telly before have we?
(except via paid eurosport app)
:) :)
I was reading their annual State of the Series thing yesterday, apparently they changed provider this year.
* during this year
know who they're using? wish RoC would switch to them too.
yeah, so far he hasn't taken out any pros. When Joe Foster gave the tech talk at Lime Rock he commented on how much training Dempsey is taking, classes and coaching. And he's been in amateur races for years, from what I know. I don't know how much the Green Hornet has trained. <----a decent villian name.
he's been racing as long as i've been watching. gotta be 4+ years now.
Yeah, let's go down to the Green Hornet pit.
Faulkner interview, LaSaffre (sp?) not talking. Faulkner says Luhr has to be more patient.
I can't find a name on the site
no probs.
Faulkner - terrible year for their team. Some cars need to be able to count to 2, that's all it takes. Doesn't wish anything bad on Muscle Milk guys, though, this is hard on all of them.
Peter has made a huge investment in the team. They have not been at fault this year in a lot of these incidents.
Not sure that's a good place to park #31.
"the red zone is for loading and unloading only"
Yeah those esses are a tad scary.
You can spy on Hindy. http://www.alms.com/camera/9
#hindycam
There's a call for him to do IndyCar. #HindyCar
ooooh yes!
More Hindy anywhere would be a good thing. #HindyCar
it's quite addictive.
Watching the Viper cam. It really is tight inside those cars.
I settled for having an onboard feed on the desktop to look at in between commenting, tweeting and checking timing...
I'm switching between the various onboards. Bandwidth can only handle the stream and 1 onboard. Struggles with that at times.
they're such high quality, there's only so many you can have open.
On my desktop they are much lower quality.
ahh, that's interesting. ipad continually adjusts based on bandwidth. maybe it's able to go higher/
Muscle Milk tweeting they're almost ready to go back out
It's a great team. Passionate and efficient.
Good work to fix that damage. They lost over 41 laps though.
They've been great about getting back into it even when things go bad. Good to see them out there again.
Still a long way to go...
The win is over but they can still win the championship.
Dario leads the P2 class by half a minute!
That's just under 1/2 a lap!
Yay for wheel changes we don't blink and miss!
F1 should restrict the number of people who can work on the car.
Is Steven out shouting at referees?
I vote to cap them at 1 wheel-team per side
heh, i reckon. although didn't see him for practice so maybe just busy.
I'm sure we are normally busier here for PLM/Sebring, his was the first missing name to spring to mind, rarely misses them.
That could work.
Or maybe it would work with just 1 gunner per side
it doesn't seem to be as big a deal this year. lack of pugs i guess. first i heard of it was your tweets this week.
Do you guys have really low volume on the ALMS feed? It's so low I have to keep it cranked up then I can barely keep a volume on the onboard cams.
It does seem more low key. Can understand that versus the old Audi v Peugeot battle, but it even seems quieter than the times only one of those turned up and the race was a foregone conclusion. Maybe factory teams really do bring more interest.
I thought it was just here because of the poor little iPad speaker
Looks like from timing that the heavily delayed Greaves car is running again.
And more of the same repeated commercials. :) Going to get sick of the battery tender thing soon.
Like Indy commercials, I almost know them by heart now. "I'm a road runner baby.."
also drivers. without franck to root for, i'm not actually bothered who wins. dario is about the only name i know. also don't think i've ever seen a sportscar race that didn't have mcnish in it.
True enough.
Maybe next year we should watch the World Endurance series instead of ALMS, Toyota v Audi has been brilliant all year. I missed Fuji, apparently that was really good.
ALMS is in a holding pattern now until the merger with Grand-Am in 2014. Now that should be a great season but until then nobody can invest.
sounds good. what's their coverage like?
Dyson 16 slow again!
Similar to Le Mans, official live feed on fiawec.com which is ok but a much better feed (with Hindy etc) on Audi.tv. They don't have as many pit reporters (err just one) but it's pretty good.
Can't rely on Eurosport though, they move it all over the place.
Following many of these guys on twitter- Olly Gavin, Guy Cosmo, Gunnar Jeanette, the Franchittis, Hindy, Lucas Luhr, Klaus Graf, Dyson, Dempsey, Joe Foster, Townsend Bell. It helps to have gone to a race and met them or saw their cars up close. :)
Fuji was so good. Audi TV has always been spot on for me.
I have a Twitter list with loads of them in it which I'm keeping an eye on.
Great that you met them. :)
ace. remind us before next season :)
didn't want to sound like a brag, but it was and is still such a thrill to be so connected to the series. I feel like they came to visit me. How thoughtful of them. :)
I am still cheering the guy in the car with Baguette cos of his Franck-esque pink helmet. Don't think they're doing very well though.
Will do.
One rest left: Shanghai next week. Again a clash with F1. They sorted that for next year, no clashes IIRC.
I think it starts at 2am our time like Fuji did.
ALMS seems the most open series of all. WEC tries but it's not the same.
3rd in the P2 class right now, looking good!
Really personable and friendly. Great fan access. Here are my Friday pics
from July https://picasaweb…sRgCIfI_qj4ycz4DA
and Saturday pics https://picasaweb…RgCJ-jzNHEzJ6ajAE
Woohoo!
thinking about it, the other thing that's changed is that we're concentrating so hard on f1 stuff this year (and next), we don't have as much time as we used to, to plug threads like this. putting them up is easy, building interest around them is much harder - especially with just a paragraph per live thread.
same issue with nfl and indycar threads. will think about what we can do about that for... err... 2014.
Dinner done - did I miss anything?
Toyota vs Audi sounds really interesting. Except... they are both my mortal enemies, so I don't know who I would cheer for :)
That makes sense too. Maybe it needs a preview post for the bigger events a few days before.
I noticed earlier too, because the thread had been put up for qualifying it wasn't listed as the next event, it looked like it was over. There's not something saying 'live now'.
When did you go?
Hello folks.
The video feed is working well. I have given up at previous races for continuous stuttering.
I read through the previous comments and gather someone did something stupid to take out of contention the #6 and #16 cars. What happened?
Only about 20mins ago.
Ha :) Yes if you don't like either it is harder.
Karun Chandhok is racing there in a quick-ish car.
Evening all. Anything interesting happened yet?
Green Hornet hit Lucas Luhr as Luhr was coming around him on the right side near pit out. I think most feel that Luhr could've been more patient. Green Hornet is the guy who took out the Delta Wing in practice earlier on the week, so safe to say he's off the Christmas card list.
Are you sure you and Mr C have never seen the Big Bang Theory. That is the only other place I have come across mortal enemies in a long time
#6 was tagged by a GTC car. Or rather he tried to make an optimistic pass of a GTC car and hit it. Took an hour to make repairs. The GTC is out.
#16 has some sort of electrical issues possibly related to the Flybrid system? Currently in the pits.
Cheers Kai.
Cheers Pat.
The main thing of note was the 16 Dyson slowing to a crawl and being taken to the garage.
Everyone else just turning laps now.
Dario leads LMP2.
not even for f1 races. essentially, because you only know when they start, not end.
you could do it for doctor who with its fixed length, but never a live race that might be affected by weather or some other such thing. and we don't want to commit to riding the button that says "is live" / "is not live".
ultimately, live threads are just a part of the site and if people find them and use them, that's brilliant! but until we've done all the other seriously cool and exciting things we're working on, they're just sort of... there.
howdy!
Forgot to say hello to Seb and to Steven. Hello.
fuel delivery issue, it seemed.
#headpingwin
Yes. Nobody wants to win.
Shhhh, don't mention the four hour race ;)
I thought that only happened at Monaco in 1982. Where is Riccardo Patrese when you need him?
hehehe!
was thinking more like "i don't want to have to watch every fp3 session, just to hit a button".
Not seen it, yet. I loves me a good mortal enemy though!
Just have it stop doing it after the scheduled end, after that nobody should expect anything.
Hehehe, we have long since learned that people always expect something :)
maybe. it's bloomin hard enough to get the start time right for an indycar race, let alone the end :)
Damn timezones! Just ask Steven.
It is a terrible shame about Lola going out of business. I wonder if Dyson are running some too-old parts.
Nicholas Prost is leading. The guest Rebellion car looks safe but so did Luhr. If Rebellion hits trouble an LMP2 car will win.
Dario leads LMP2. Baguette has got into the OAK car in 5th after stops.
Ryan Dalziel leads PC.
Vilander in the chrome Ferrari leads GT from the two Vettes.
You get
onetwotena few time zone conversions wrong and people assume you are clueless about them:) :)
Gooo Baggy!
People are so demanding.
They aren't good at promoting their start times.
YES! MY question!!!!! I tweeted that!!!
Was just about to say that!!!
Wow!
Kai @AndersFinn
@almsnotes For Damien Faulkner: How does a driver best practice for this level of multi-class racing? How do you learn race awareness?
I heart Hindy!
That's your avatar and everything
♥
I was trying to find a way to ask if Peter should be racing at this level or not without being insulting, and knowing Peter is paying Faulkner's paycheck.
Very sneaky
where did you see it?
will put "add live now" button on the list. christine has cooked up more than 6 months worth of new feature work beforehand though, so we'll struggle on until next year :)
They put up a caption on the bottom left of the screen with your Twitter name and picture and the question.
I was so taken aback I completely didn't listen to his answer.
Anyone would think she is just trying to keep you from sniffing her baking ingredients
Hehehe!
holy crap! I didn't see it anywhere. I'm on race feed. Was that on snoop cam?
I'm still shaking. hehe
Ah! :) Sounds like some fun stuff coming.
Main race feed.
he mostly said "let them by" and some tracks are easier to pass on than others. that's all I got. And from being on track for my last Lime Rock race day in July it was so very distracting to have people in your mirrors all the time. I imagine it takes a lot of seat time to really get that awareness of who is where while you try to race your race. And I was just going slow and not in a race.
:)
busiest.offseason.ever.
sounds like you need to pay better attention, I saw it as well!
ha. I totally didn't even see it. Damn.
Kai, plugging lessons required! sidepodcast.com/p…nd-lime-rock-park
:)
My feed goes in and out of good quality. It's very hard to read sometimes.
Plus I was just freaking out. ;)
Faulkner in response to Kai.
There are places on every track that are less risky to overtake on. You just have to try and be as co-operative as you can.
There are places where you know there is a faster car coming and you think it is crazy to lift off but it is better to lift off and let them through.
great question.
he also added later that all the classes have different color headlights which makes it easier for drivers to tell what class is coming up on them.
So what Peter did not do. But this all implies that the driver has seen the other car approaching. And I guess he mentioned the different color headlights that cars have so you can tell what kind is coming up.
it'd be cool if they could get the 2 Franchitti's and Di Resta racing in the same car at this race.
I would like to see that crew win Le Mans maybe with added McNish
It's incredible that the video quality on the web broadcast is better than the tv broadcast on MotorsTV
i cannot say enough a good things about it.
my volume is low so I had to lean up to the speaker to hear his answer. I stopped the onboard cam to see if video quality will improve. Not yet.
Did anyone get a screen grab? My first reflex was to type on here ;)
Trouble for Baguette in the pits
It is turning into quite an exciting battle between the #6 Pickett and the #16 Dyson. Shame it is for 38th place.
Bonsai!
♡
Ok, so if I want that crisp quality on the race feed I can't run an onboard cam simultaneously. #thanksAT&T
oh yeah. *blush* thanks.
oh, and thanks to a class action lawsuit I got a whopping check for $7.87 because AT&T misrepresented how much bandwidth customers would get/what they'd deliver.
we're gonna leave you guys to it. appreciate the thread pat. enjoy the remainder. catch you all tomorrow for either the hangout or nfl.
*big hugs*
thanks for the hospitality. I won't be around tomorrow afternoon/evening, unfortunately. But I'll catch up soon.
Thanks for the space. Sorry the race fizzled out a bit. I'm usually out on a Sunday afternoon/evening so I'll likely miss the hangout.
You're rich
Have a fun evening
Till tomorrow :)
Motors just switched to NASCAR
Nationwide Series? Pressdog is tweeting live from there.
There's an official PLM feed on alms.com.
I just took the opportunity to put the dinner in the oven, having only just remembered.
Ooh Dario.
@almsnotes 3 mins
The #055 @Level5Racing P2 getting a stop and 1-min hold for avoidable contact. @dariofranchitti Is leading class.
Yes
I'm there
That doesn't look too healthy. #66
He needs a shovel.
Well and truely #beached.
FCY
Thought the Ferrari might bring it out but he survived. That 66 Porsche looks stuck in the gravel.
Half distance
Less than half time.
Not bad. 4 and a half hours gone. Might get this race done in a bit over 9 hours.
It is a vodka sponsor on that shiney-shiney car
Ahh. Usually tequila, maybe same company.
Patron is the usual sponsor. Good thought that Ultimat Vodka may be same company.
yep. Patron bought Ultimat.
Patron Spirits bought Ultimat Vodka 5 years ago
www.tequila.net/t…ltimat-vodka.html
Damn. Points for Kai
I agree, Ferraris aren't a nice noise and they're very loud. They hurt if you forget your earplugs, or they remind you that you need them.
hehe
Dario looks like he is enjoying himself
yeah, very happy. Must be so much fun to race with his brother, too.
and in his INDY overalls
Great that he's there. Weird about CHip letting him do this but not Surfers though.
Green, Marino's turn to go for it :)
Oooops
Griffin just turned in on him!
oh, Guy Cosmo has 2 min hold.
I'm struggling to see that as his fault.
for avoidable contact, being on probation.
me too, but I know I'm biased, so I'm restraining from too much comment.
Ah if he's on probation that's a little more understandable, just for getting involved. Bit harsh.
OOPSY
Ooo dear - bumper cars
He's playing bumper cars out there today.
points to Will. :)
Why thank you ;)
Is it just me that thinks the Delta Wing is like Adrian Newey's take on a Reliant Robin?
May be the best thing Top Gear ever did
Probably true
The space shuttle game is the most popular game on the Top Gear site
http://www.topgear.com/uk/games/
Marino didn't seem to be in the car long
Only a stint?
Seems odd. Single stints are rare nowadays
More turn 1 contact
Toilet?
Might be a timing issue if Tucker has to get back in the other car?
I was thinking some kind of clever tactics but you may be right. Hopefully someone will ask the question
I am starting to think that gravel is magnetised
Please keep me informed, cos I've got the sound off, so I can be at least a little but social here
you can tweet a question, chances are good they'll ask it. #truestory
They must get loads of questions
They defintely won't answer if we don't ask, so I just asked. Fingers crossed they'll answer.
Qs to @almsnotes?
They answered one already
and Pat's on the weekly radio broadcast, and another one of mine at a different race.
we're incredibly famous, actually.
I've done as well doubling our chances
great plan. TeamSPC. :)
SPC FTW
:D
and Steven comes with the RT. Nice. :)
I love the face on those M3s. Big smile.
Holy crap, they can't see.
Let's hope their visors have some good tinting
I can smell that burning from here
Never seen that big a lump of tyre thrown so high
yeah, and it came off so neatly, in a full ring.
Flying tyre
Amazing shot of that rim
http://instantrimshot.com/
I think you deserve that one
ha. Note to self: Please remember, self, that the ALMS volume is very low from the site, so when you play something else, like, say Steven's rimshot, it will be VERY LOUD. :0
I wish I had thought about a loud noise earlier.
To be fair I believe Mr Andronov introduced the community to the instant rimshot
Steering trouble in the Vette, not good anywhere but horrible here
GT leaders separated by 0.3 seconds
Is that Patrick Dempsey in the wall?
Somebody call a doctor!!
Yeah looks like a big one in the tyre barrier
I think he's in the #27, if that's who it is...
SC
Is he getting a ride back, ... and what does that mean about his team (<10m rule?)?
Game over. Although he was practically last anyway after earlier delays.
Next year's PLM clashes with WEC at Fuji. Crazy.
And with that, it's time for me to call it a night. See you tomorrow
Night Will
Utter madness
See ya later.
Night Will
Level 5 no95 reached 70% distance so can't be overhauled in points, are ALMS P2 champs.
7 hours gone already
Flybrid runs at 60,000 rpm
Long yellow for barrier repair. Green again.
If one of those ever lets go there will be bits of it hundreds of miles away
Hughes off at t1 in the Murphy car at the restart
puncture on restart caused him to go off.
GTC off at the esses. Two cars off should mean another safety car
He is moving again
Gunnar Jeannette @gunnarjeannette
Just got finished with a QUADRUPLE Stint. I am LeTired. @NissanDeltaWing is in great shape! Lucas should go to the finish :)
that's awesome. have to code so won't see the end of the race, but will follow the comments.
#semimultitasking
Quadruple stint is good after the bashing he took earlier in the week
Fantastic
Gunnar jumps off mountains in one of those suits, like a flying squirrel, doesn't he?
Sunset approaching, best time of the race
99 laps left
I look at the clock and suddenly it's nearly midnight. Doesn't feel like I've been here since 4. Always the way with this racing. :)
www.youtube.com/w…tch?v=yhzXUVrGtRw
Works hard for all the GoPros they throw at him. At least Mr C knows how to get a GoPro now
I'm not feeling 100% so I could use a nap, but I love this magic hour time of the race.
oooh, i have a devious and cunning plan that will ensure a gopro without leaving my seat.
i am not jumping of off anything!
Tweet Gunnar?
:) :) ::)
Devious and cunning. Impressive
Not long to go now.
@gunnarjeannette
Nice move to take the P2 lead
Need to get Dario or Marino back in that car
Tucker is the team boss though and I reckon he's got an ego
It's quite amazing that there is any question of not being able to get the distance in before the time limit. When Stirling Moss won the Mille Miglia in 1955 in a Mercedes he covered 1000 miles on public roads all over the north of Italy in 10 hours and 7 minutes. You would have thought 57 years of development and driving on a modern track where the drivers know every little bump would mean they would average much higher speed
isn't it because of all the long yellows?
Gorgeous shot seeing the smoking Ferrari in the yellow lights in the pit at dusk. Wow.
Wow hot hot brakes, and I guess October ambient temps even in Georgia are cool
what's the total so far?
Did he have a lot of straight roads in that race?
It's 68F/20C there right now.
More than I thought then
I think we've had six SCs so far and the last one was over half an hour for car collection & barrier repair
I thought it would be cooler, too. Maybe that just shows us how hot that car is.
Properly dark already
oh no. 055 penalized with 2min 20 seconds for passing under yellow!
Wow that's big. He'll lose two laps with that.
Interestingly @ConquestRacing were questioning it through Twitter, saying they should've been leaders on the restart
Tucker totally screwed up.
@ConquestRacing 45 mins
we were p1 after pit stops, the #055 car came out behind us, they were waved around and now we restarted in 2nd. cant explain why #alms
so the officials screwed up?
Unsure.
I would doubt it. Most of Europe didn't have motorways then and even if they had they were not in keeping with the spirit of the MM. I assume they were still using the traditional route.
I would have thought even with the yellows that the average would be considerably higher than 1955
I think we're still on schedule for 9hr30m or thereabouts.
Dario Franchitti @dariofranchitti
Well, the ALMS officiating continues to baffle me....
Muiscle Milk make te 70% and take the championship
oh man, keep your lights on, man.
Brendon Hartley parked
Scary
Alright, Marino, hammer down.
Corvette leads BMW after pit stops.
no.20 Dyson is officially out, shame for that team to drop two cars.
Refueling with engine on... who?
Wow the BMW kept the engine running during refuelling? How'd you forget that?
AH! Auberlin! Penalty.
Auberlin's foot was not on the clutch during that pit stop.
penalty for not having your foot on the clutch?
No turns out it was the air jack, car was raised on internal air jacks during refuelling.. have to wait until after.
no, they said engine running but that was an error. Penalty for using air jack with fuel nozzle in.
oooh, got ya.
Vilander leads in the ESM chrome Ferrari, question is does he have to make a stop as they others did. Corvette 2nd
Last stop for Marino.
2 laps behind Plowman
Marino is closing in. And the car he's chasing is closing on the car in front of that.
And the GT lead gap is coming down slowly, that leader might run out...
20 to go for the leader
Ooh Plowman over the gravel
ahh, may as well tune in for the end ;)
Plowman in 37 speeding in pit lane! Leader gets penalty.
Diaz takes lead.
Wow, throw the race away..
is it over, can they come back?
Many key errors by many different people all day.
We'll have to see the gap next time around. I think too far.
I figure this will be the first win for a #12 black-and-gold Lotus since Ayrton Senna won the 1987 USA (Detroit) Grand Prix.
Crikey. Good stat.
(even if it is a Lola-Toyota with branding :) )
Plowey's teammate:
@dhhracing 3 mins
Just shoot me now.
and
Conquest Racing @ConquestRacing
wow we had a puncture and now we got a pit penalty. What a heartbreak..... #alms #plm
P2 lead gap 24 seconds.
is that ruby on rails dude?
I've seen those words associated with him, no idea what it means thoguh
it's like php, a web development language. some say better, i say worse :)
Ah :)
Just a few laps now
hehe "i'm not stopping on the motorway". hindy doing a great job today.
white flag
Final lap
For Bart Simpson?
I reckon this is the death of the ALMS; that next year it will be Grand-Am with some extra GT cars.
that's what he said :)
what does that mean though, different looking cars?
he quickly corrected to Bart Hayden. :)
heheh
Well done Rebellion, even after the competition faded, this place is still tough.
And the Ferrari made it.
Why are you going to ads NOW? Wait for the cars.
Next year it is the same as this year.
2014 will be different. Don't know how yet. They will keep a relationship with LM.. for a while.
Level 5 win P2, Plowman got the gap down to 8 seconds after that! Franchittis 3rd.
Detla Wing 6th.
Baguette's team 8th overall, 5th in P2 class.
The Michelin Man is so much better than the firechicken that lurks in the background at Indy victory circles. Michelin Man gets up there, thumbs up. He DOES something.
#truestory
What we saw at the Daytona 24 Hours. ALMS and Grand-Am have 'merged', but it looks like a takeover by Grand-Am, with the Le Mans rules prototypes being abolished.
(I withdraw my previous comment as I thought the merger was happening in 2013.)
ah-ha. cheers.
LM prototypes have not been abolished. P1 cars might disappear, which will be a mistake, but they may keep P2.
Yay, Vilander. #Finn
They want to keep the link to Le Mans so I'd expect a P class and a GT class to remain in '14, along side the two Daytona classes.
What a shame the fight went out of the lead class today. The fizz went out of it a bit.
P2 and GT got good towards the end. :)
Hopefully '13 won't be a damp squib year for ALMS as everyone waits for '14.
Hindy, Shaw and that pit crew just did the whole 9hr 30m race with barely a break.
Reminds me I forgot to note the finish time.
Comments clock suggests it was about 9hrs 35mins.
Well thanks for coming along. :)
I guess we'll do it again for Daytona in Feb?
heck of a race. wish i had more hours free to comment!
certainly can do :)
yay! I do love sportscars so much.
Thanks for the comment day, everyone. I'll miss you guys tomorrow, but when my class is over next week I'll be around more, I hope.
It is a great event. Even in the more boring parts it is nice to just watch the cars go round. More photogenic than Sebring.
and the weather was perfect too.
