London 2012, Opening Ceremony

Summer Olympic Games

Published by Christine Blachford

The buildup to this Olympics Games has seemed endless, but it has finally arrived, and with it comes the Opening Ceremony. Film director Danny Boyle has been overseeing the spectacle about to unfold before us and although I've personally tried to avoid spoilers, I do know there has been talk of sheep and rain clouds. There will be the lighting of the flame, no doubt plenty of dancing and perhaps even an athlete or two. Grab your snacks and settle in as the world tunes in to the opening of the 2012 Summer Games.

ITV must hate the Olympics. what can you put on TV against 16 hours of olympic coverage for a month?

  • Will^ 27/07/2012 at 19:30:01

I like Gary, he's a good presenter in my book

No arguements - I do like him, but would've liked somebody in a more traditional Olympic Sport - I've no suggestions though ;)

  • Amy 27/07/2012 at 19:30:36

On the snacks front I have a bag of chips, a bag of kitkat balls and a bottle of apple tango. I conquered the co-op.

Tomorrow is day 1 (of competition)

This is what I was thinking.

  • Simon 27/07/2012 at 19:38:54

    But we've had football already???

  • Pat W 27/07/2012 at 19:39:00

Hello. I'm now home, wishing I was still in London.. thankful I had the chance to go and see it all decked out for the Olympics and see the torch.

I went for a walk today and lots of people were on London Bridge saying the torch was passing on the river soon, I spent 15 minutes of my precious present-buying time waiting for it only for the cops to tell us it had already been! Didn't get the present.. but I'll pick up a bottle of Port or something tomorrow. Rushing about looking for things I did have to rush to Waterloo and missed my train, my fault, also partly the fault of the tube.

On the snacks from I will have Doritos and dip but I was considering what to have for dinner first.

I turned the TV on and Huw Edwards was walking in the stadium spoiling things, so I'm watching C4 News instead. Ban-Ki Moon was on, apparently he carried the torch earlier!

  • Amy 27/07/2012 at 19:39:24

This is what I was thinking.

as sidepodcast Olympic correspondent I call tomorrow day 1

  • Amy 27/07/2012 at 19:40:10

surely, after seeing lazenby's attempts, he's a presenting god.

somehow I don't even see Simon when I watch sky. It's like he's not there.

  • Christine 27/07/2012 at 19:40:14

as sidepodcast Olympic correspondent I call tomorrow day 1

Three votes for Day 1. It's official.

  • Lukeh 27/07/2012 at 19:41:22

Pesky footballers getting a head start.

  • Lukeh 27/07/2012 at 19:47:31

I'm looking forward to the timewarp. Chris noticed that in the pub a few times on the TV downstairs, good spotting!

  • Christine 27/07/2012 at 19:52:43

Two Olympicses ago, I had a giant world map on the wall and learnt where lots of places I hadn't heard of before were. The Olympics = geography lesson. I miss my map.

the people in front of us at the football were trying to name all the flags hanging from the ceiling. There were lots I didn't know, I am going to try learn more flags this Olympics :)

  • Ryan 27/07/2012 at 19:57:03

Say it quietly, but I'm looking forward to this. Although I am annoyed the first proper mess up of the games happened at Newcastle.

I'm still hoping for Jonathan Edwards or... umm.... someone else from the north east, to light the flame.

  • Lukeh 27/07/2012 at 20:01:07

    Geese!!

  • Lukeh 27/07/2012 at 22:18:16

    Eh?

none of the welsh players have sung anything so far in the football in terms of british anthems and stuff

  • Will^ 27/07/2012 at 22:18:37

more so for alan turing than the war

Of course, but hard to avoid on of the reasons he was soo good etc

  • jpancoast 27/07/2012 at 22:18:42

Hello Mr C. all the cool people are clearly here :-)

Only reason I'm still here is it started raining and I'd like to not spend too much of my 20mile ride home in the rain!

  • Steven Roy 27/07/2012 at 22:18:42

Remember they have cut it down so people can make the last train

They couldn't have put on a few more trains?

  • Amy 27/07/2012 at 22:18:52

none of the welsh players have sung anything so far in the football in terms of british anthems and stuff

that's so dumb that they're making it an issue. Half the kiwi players didn't sing ours either. Maybe some people just don't sing in those moments.

  • Poppy 27/07/2012 at 22:19:17

I thought they were'nt lighting the torch till 1am by which time I will have lost interest and wandered off probs to bed

At least they are playing, rather than Scotland + NI who refused to let anyone go.

  • Steven Roy 27/07/2012 at 22:20:12

I wonder when this country will join this century. First they cut of Springsteen and McCartney because some jobsworth decided rules is rules. Now they are shortening this to suit a pre-existing train timetable.

    Utter madness

  • Lukeh 27/07/2012 at 22:20:37

    Another thought too

Sir Danny Boyle following the Olympics?

i love Sir Paul.. but i didn't want it to have a predictable ending like him. :)

  • Ryan 28/07/2012 at 00:40:44

The ending was almost perfect... and then they got him in.

  • Amy 28/07/2012 at 00:41:15

i love Sir Paul.. but i didn't want it to have a predictable ending like him. :)

being on the other side of the world I'm not sure I've ever seen him close anything so it works for non UK people at least!

  • Pat W 28/07/2012 at 00:41:42

He should've closed the closing ceremony with this :)

  • Steven Roy 28/07/2012 at 00:41:48

Every time he closes a big event the sound fails. He did the same with Live Aid

  • Lukeh 28/07/2012 at 00:42:17

live 8 was a bit dodgy too.

can't think of anyone better to be honest. not sure the song is very olympian though.

  • Steven Roy 28/07/2012 at 00:42:55

can't think of anyone better to be honest. not sure the song is very olympian though.

He wrote it for Julian Lennon to cheer him up about something. Not sure the relevance here

  • Christine 28/07/2012 at 00:42:57

Mostly whenever they bring out Paul for some kind of 'yay we're British' thing, I just think I'm glad it's not Cliff.

  • Mr C 28/07/2012 at 00:43:24

He wrote it for Julian Lennon to cheer him up about something. Not sure the relevance here

It's only the na-na-na-na and the building crescendo, not the lyrics.

They have to play the Muse song though? It's the official song.

  • RocketRedhead 28/07/2012 at 00:44:23

tenner says he's there though :)

no he'll be at the tennis tomorrow!

  • Steven Roy 28/07/2012 at 00:45:05

I wonder if the sound is bad because he is actually doing it live

  • Mr C 28/07/2012 at 00:45:08

He wrote it for Julian Lennon to cheer him up about something. Not sure the relevance here

come together was a better choice, but they gave that to someone who a one hit wonder who hasn't seen the top 40 in 5 years. odd.

NO! I hope they are not saving Cliff for the closing ceremony. I am going to worry until the end now

    no muse then?.. :)

  • Amy 28/07/2012 at 00:47:21

That side shot of the cauldron looks like the picture on the closing ceremony tickets.

IT WAS ON BOTH OF THEM. Mind explode.

  • Will^ 28/07/2012 at 00:48:30

    no muse then?.. :)

You'll be hearing them everywhere else ;)

  • Will^ 28/07/2012 at 00:49:18

All content in the series 2012 Summer Olympic Games

The buildup to this Olympics Games has seemed endless, but it has finally arrived, and with it comes the Opening Ceremony. Film director Danny Boyle has been overseeing the spectacle about to unfold before us and although I've personally tried to avoid spoilers, I do know there has been talk of sheep and rain clouds. There will be the lighting of the flame, no doubt plenty of dancing and perhaps even an athlete or two. Grab your snacks and settle in as the world tunes in to the opening of the 2012 Summer Games.
