Liqui Moly Bathurst 12 Hours

The Ultimate Aussie Endurance Race 2013

Published by Pat W

The incredible Mount Panorama circuit host more than one endurance race per year. The 1000km V8 Supercar race may be more famous but this younger event for GT3 and Touring cars is growing in stature. This year's race has the biggest entry yet: 47 cars with some 'name' drivers like Mika Salo and Bernd Schneider, and coverage for the first time from Radio Le Mans including web video (which acts like a DVR so you can pick up where you left off). The atmosphere at The Mountain is very relaxed, there's no championship on the line and no points, so just dip in and out whenever you feel like it!

    Hello!

The race is on lap 1 right now. www.radiolemans.com go to the Bathurst12 link for video, but it is very patchy.

  • Pat W 09/02/2013 at 20:07:55

Thanks to Christine for the thread.

  • Pat W 09/02/2013 at 20:08:37

I keep getting Lost Signal, everyone is getting the same.

I'm using the Listen Live audio link alongside the video while they fix it.

  • Pat W 09/02/2013 at 20:09:36

I was told the race would start at 8.10pm GMT but it started at 5 past instead..

that one keeps stopping every few seconds for me. :(

I hoped they'd fix it for today. :(

  • Pat W 09/02/2013 at 20:19:49

Weird thing is, it is 7.20am at Bathurst now. Full day race instead of overnight.

  • Pat W 09/02/2013 at 20:20:20

    Sounds like someone's gone off.

  • Pat W 09/02/2013 at 20:22:53

    @radiolemans 23 secs

The organisers are aware of the issue with the video stream & they ARE working on it. I will keep you posted. Audio stream is solid #b12hr

  • Pat W 09/02/2013 at 20:23:39

Timing should be here but it is also down timing.bathurst12…ults.php?race=110

    Not a great start.

  • Mike 09/02/2013 at 20:24:33

They need some help from V8 Supercars, they streamed the Bathurst 1000 on Youtube perfectly last year

  • Pat W 09/02/2013 at 20:27:09

I watched half this race a year ago and it was perfectly fine, demand could be higher this year.

  • Pat W 09/02/2013 at 20:29:39

The interesting thing is the GT3 cars (Ferraris, Mercedes, BMWs) have the same sort of lap time as the V8s but they get there in different ways. So the GT3s are *much* faster across the top in the twisty bit because they have a heap of downforce. But the V8s are quicker on the two long straights because they have more grunt, less drag and are skinnier. With developments in GT cars they're looking at a potential lap record today.

  • Kai 09/02/2013 at 20:31:14

I don't know how many fans there are on the east coast of the US but we are all snowed in in New England.

I have it on but I'm multitasking and missed it.

  • Pat W 09/02/2013 at 20:37:07

Safety Car should be in soon, hopefully gives people a chance to fix these infernal servers

  • Pat W 09/02/2013 at 20:42:33

    Some names:

Sportscar legend Bernd Schneider in a Mercedes.

WTCC champ Rob Huff is here in an Audi.

Mika Salo in a Ferrari with camouflage livery!

Craig Baird, V8s man who did BTCC for a bit, in another Ferrari

Shane van Gisbergen, the V8s guy who retired at age 23 at the end of last season... then signed to drive for a rival team this year

    Steve Richards, V8s legend

Jonny Reid who did A1GP for Team NZ.

Evening. Yep they fixed it: new.livestream.co…vl/bathurst12hour

I think you can even go back to view as a replay, then click LIVE to get back to live again. Like a web DVR. :)

That is a feature I don't think we have seen before anywhere

  • Steven Roy 09/02/2013 at 21:27:40

Bathurst looks weird with different cars

  • Pat W 09/02/2013 at 21:28:23

That is a feature I don't think we have seen before anywhere

I first discovered it at Dubai 24 a month ago, and Bathurst 12 is now affiliated with the guys who run that. I love it.

Dubai also archived the entire race on their website so I went to bed and watched it in pieces over the rest of the weekend - planning to do the same tomorrow for the end of this one!

  • Steven Roy 09/02/2013 at 21:28:54

Yet another series that makes F1 look amateurish

I remember seeing a V8 hit a kangaroo. It was very near the start of a lap so I guess their info is good

  • Steven Roy 09/02/2013 at 21:42:10

Unusual to see Subaru Imprezza on a track

  • Pat W 09/02/2013 at 21:45:36

  • Steven Roy 09/02/2013 at 21:46:43

Ooh puncture and spin for 81 Audi, DragonSpeed

    That was a Mansellesque spin

  • Pat W 09/02/2013 at 21:49:03

More spinners. That camo car was leading earlier with Mika Salo driving, now his co-driver is almost lapped

  • Steven Roy 09/02/2013 at 21:53:09

    Someone bashed up their BMW

  • Pat W 09/02/2013 at 21:53:22

BMW in the wall after just smoking in the pits

  • Steven Roy 09/02/2013 at 21:53:45

    Hit the wall both sides

  • Pat W 09/02/2013 at 21:54:15

Worth mentioning this race is attracting a fair few European and a couple of US teams these days thanks in part to Creventic's involvement (the people who run Dubai 24). That's partly why Engstler's BMW is here.

  • Steven Roy 09/02/2013 at 21:55:38

Just heard about DC's sister. Nice touch on the museum's website

Apparently he was on James Martin's program this morning and was told after that

  • Pat W 09/02/2013 at 21:59:09

Thanks to that advert I now at long last know what Liqui Moly actually is.

  • Steven Roy 09/02/2013 at 22:00:41

Thanks to that advert I now at long last know what Liqui Moly actually is.

You should have asked. They used to sponsor cars in just about every class of racing in the world. There was also a spell where engine and petrol ads were fashionable and everyone was using them.

Moly comes from Molybdenum - useless info

  • Pat W 09/02/2013 at 22:01:25

Apparently he was on James Martin's program this morning and was told after that

    Devastating.

  • Pat W 09/02/2013 at 22:01:33

    Not James Martin.

  • Steven Roy 09/02/2013 at 22:02:24

Lots of cars getting damaged. Wheel on track and two cars parked against walls

Team Engslter ran Liqui Moly cars in WTCC for years and years. Just never bothered to look it up!

  • Steven Roy 09/02/2013 at 22:03:40

Team Engslter ran Liqui Moly cars in WTCC for years and years. Just never bothered to look it up!

Someone in F1 had Liqui Moly on their car in the 80s. Can't remember who though

  • Pat W 09/02/2013 at 22:03:56

Lots of cars getting damaged. Wheel on track and two cars parked against walls

Earlier about 45mins in, when the stream was down they had a 5-car crash, 3 cars ended up stopped by the wall on the Conrod and there were wheels and debris all over the place.

  • Steven Roy 09/02/2013 at 22:07:49

Apparently Jordan had liqui Moly on their car. I have no memory of that

    www.scotsman.com/…nd-dead-1-2783387

SC doing a wave by... but he just let the leader through..

  • Pat W 09/02/2013 at 22:16:17

So the car behind the SC is in 5th, so that's weird, and they're going green now.

  • Pat W 09/02/2013 at 22:30:51

    Wow, traffic ahead

  • Pat W 09/02/2013 at 22:38:28

Fighting to get on the lead lap, no enforced moving over for blue flags, it really works in this type of racing. Not sure I'd like it in F1.

  • Pat W 09/02/2013 at 22:53:27

This is hair-raising stuff at the top of the hill with the traffic

  • Steven Roy 09/02/2013 at 22:54:15

This is hair-raising stuff at the top of the hill with the traffic

Not the ideal place for a car going that slowly

  • Pat W 09/02/2013 at 23:03:02

hey all, have a bit of time to join ya. who are we / should i support?

Mika Salo in a Ferrari, unfortunately it is a camoflage livery which doesn't look good. He's not driving at the minute.

    I like that leading Mercedes.

A Ferrari and an Audi have been fighting like crazy to get back on the lead lap.

  • Pat W 09/02/2013 at 23:04:03

The Mercs got an early lead but are driving to fuel mileage now apparently, so the others are catching up which is always fun. THe main thing is seeing a line of 3 or 4 GT cars trying to get through all the slower cars through the fast twisty bit at the top of the hill :)

  • Steven Roy 09/02/2013 at 23:04:10

that'll do. decent race so far?

There have been quite a few crashes and damaged cars recently which have broken it up a bit

  • Pat W 09/02/2013 at 23:04:37

    Race hihglights playing now

  • Mr C 09/02/2013 at 23:05:17

  • Pat W 09/02/2013 at 23:09:55

Leader in the pits, Jaeger's Erebus Mercedes. That should put Primat/Simonson's Phoenix Audi to the lead?

Slight confusing as there are two A.Simonsons.

Morning all. Iffy video stream, sadly. :(

Kai had trouble too. Once they cured the lack of signal it has been fine here.

  • Pat W 09/02/2013 at 23:58:16

Brendon Hartley on RLM now. First GT race for him, he's done sportscars but not GTs. Becoming quite versatile.

    And someone getting black flagged

The breakdown trucks have had lots of practise

  • Pat W 10/02/2013 at 00:12:36

Donuts in the comm box! Now I'm jealous.

  • Pat W 10/02/2013 at 00:12:57

They'll have to get a truck up there

I think the issue is my slow wifi. I'm popping in and out and keeping an eye thanks to you guys. I wanted to watch it, not just listen to it. :(

Listening to racing is never a substitute for watching. Shame you are missing it because the stream is really good

  • Kai 10/02/2013 at 00:19:09

My download speed is pretty slow, but I can check that out...after I finish my dinner. Thanks for the idea.

How is your blizzard treating you?

How is your blizzard treating you?

It's been good to me. No power outage, 2 feet of snow and I got exercise shoveling out.

2 feet of snow can't be a bundle of fun

  • Steven Roy 10/02/2013 at 00:23:01

Did the Salo car re-join the race?

  • Mr C 10/02/2013 at 00:24:23

i can't see it out there, but live timing's not loading for me.

Still showing 78 laps completed so it is still in the pits

  • Steven Roy 10/02/2013 at 00:28:01

  • Pat W 10/02/2013 at 00:28:19

Camouflaged means we couldn't see it earlier.

  • Kai 10/02/2013 at 00:28:25

Ah just leave it there and stay home in the warm.

I had to shovel out in front of my garage before the plow guy came and made a mountain against the garage door. And it's going to be so cold tonight that it'll be like cement tomorrow. Plus I wanted to be outside.

But now I'm in here safe and warm, and pretty tired. :)

Yep, I have to be a pro at that now, given the last couple of years.

I would be surprised if Webber is doing that. Normally he only does a one year contract at a time ao it would be unusual for him to be looking that far ahead

  • Pat W 10/02/2013 at 00:36:58

I can't say I really took the Ferrari talk seriously, 'course you never know in motorsport. Porsche surprises me though.

  • Mr C 10/02/2013 at 00:42:39

am gonna have to call it a night soon. cheers for pointing it out, hope we can catch more this year.

I would have thought his last visit to Le Mans would have put him off going back.

Yeah I ought to in the next half hour or hour. Next one to watch is Sebring although there is Grand-Am at COTA before that.

Of course the same weekend as Sebring there is the Maxi Endurance 48 Hour Race. Yes 48.

I kind of want to be extremely rich to buy a couple of GT cars to race in all these places around the world. Bathurst, Spa, Nordschleife, Daytona

  • Pat W 10/02/2013 at 00:51:31

Not necessarily drive myself I'm not good enough

I'm flagging so I'm about to go too. Thanks for coming along.

  • Pat W 10/02/2013 at 01:22:56

Remember if you haven't got much to do on Sunday the whole race is being archived in 2hr chunks on livestream so you can carry on then if you want.

  • Pat W 10/02/2013 at 01:36:56

88 camo car spun at the top of the hill, not a good spot, rear damage

  • Pat W 10/02/2013 at 02:13:00

I made it to half-distance but I'm going to bed now. The thread will remain open race-long for anyone who is still following along. :)

Thanks for joining in. Would've given more notice had I thought about it but last-minute is the Sidepodcast way.

For anyone thinking of catching up with the finish - its well worth it. The last hour or so was a cracker. In one word: rain.

Great race and also great to see some serious competition all the way through. Good to see thIs race growing. GT3 is the perfect type of car for this circuit.

I've only just caught up. Wow that was torrential, like the monsoon in Malaysia or Canada... only for ten minutes then it was sunny again.. but then the skies went black!

Amazing track, such a challenge. The race was a bit broken up with SCs and stuff but it's just a pleasure to watch these cars at that place (had it been new Hockenheim I might've not gone back to see the end).
