Touchscreens at the ready, it's time for a new Apple product launch! The banners are up at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco for the expected launch of an updated iPad. Rumours and supposed leaks have been big on this one, almost everybody is expecting a higher resolution screen to give Retina Display qualities to the best selling tablet on the market.

Christine had an HTC phone didn't she? They have haptic feedback. I love it, it uses up more battery but it's nice having a response from the screen
she's wandered off to make food. i'll ask in a bit, but i've never played with it. how does it work?
I have no idea how it works. You tick the box in settings and it vibrates slightly when you touch things like letters on keyboards.

My HTCs have both rumbled to register a touch, but the rumours for the event go way past that to the extent of being able to feel ridges and surface changes. It uses magic apparently.

no. i don't care about the quality though, it's the thing that alex and i want - buy any content once, and have it self upgrade forever (maybe paying the difference, but not the full price). that's how content should work, purchase now and have it future proof.

thats before I saw the ads for the smart cover! The smart cover is 100% what sold me. Somehow I have recently lost my smart cover. I assume its fallen between my headboard and the wall.

retina display makes the screen on the new one better than my laptop. i've never had a tablet better than the thing on my desk. this ipad glass has overtaken not only its former self, but also any other pc or mac money can buy.
i haven't seen it (clearly), but the text should rival e-ink for clarity. with a back light and no page refresh glitching, that might make it the best ebook reader in the world.

Nothing beats the Kindle for reading only, if you need something for all conditions. The cases with the little torch are a tad pricey though
Me, I still prefer the versatility of the iPad
for my uses it's a slightly, the retina screen is no "must have" for me at all.
the whole reason I like e-ink is because it has no backlight. reading with a backlight is evil ;)
It's really not, I read a lot when travelling back in January and with the page set to sepia and the brightness adjusted correctly, it was no strain at all.

fair enough. we're buying one and that will probably turn in to two. i'm going from giving away an ipad 1 due to lack of use to "holy cow, my laptop takes up too much space".
as updates go, for me today was a game changer.

and even the same people change. two years ago i was glued to my laptop and one year ago you weren't buying and ipad 2. and that's why comment trawling is awesome.
thats how I read off my Ipad too but I find regardless of how long I do it for I'm always aware it's a screen, with the Kindle I seem to forget that completely. I do never understand why people always want to make it a Kindle vs iPad thing, for someone who owns and uses both a LOT I see them as completely different, complementary devices. Definitely not an either/or.

it doesn't make sense to have a tiny screen with a massive resolution and a massive screen with a tiny resolution. can you image how that'll screw with your head, dragging apps between the two?
