By Christine Blachford

Hello and welcome to Thursday. It's usually a horrid day but I'm sure today will be completely different because it is a certain Timo Glock's birthday! Happy Birthday Mr Glock. I hope that RG has bought his favourite driver a present, it seems only fair. Now you have wished Glock a happy birthday, your day is complete, but I would just like to share some of the other things we're talking about first...

    Not that I want to give them the satisfaction of even saying its name, but the top 5 of the non-christines-rankings-rankings....haven't changed at all.

    Apparently Jenson's still the best driver in the world, even though he got owned by Lewis #sorrylou.

    Mark Webber however is better than Lewis, which is nice to know. How many WDC has mark won again? oh yeah, that would be none, and how many races?

    Oh and I'm sure Felipe will be glad to hear that Buemi, Gabriele Tarquini, Jules Bianchi (GP2 driver) and Danica Patrick (amongst others) are all better than him!

    Well no I certainly don't. A couple of Nick's friends have done it, but I guess it's a bit different over there with the whole jail thing.

    These friends are very christian though. I'm sure it's all very embarrassing!

    We're a very Catholic country. It doesn't stop it from happening. No jail terms involved, but it usually involves disownment and losing your share of the inheritance if you don't go with it.

    I know that kind of religious. They don't stick to the rules any more than anyone else but they want people to think they stick to them

    I spent most of my teenage years playing at this. Pretty much gave it up when I went to university though. I have a lot of Christian friends though and yeah, I wouldn't have said their moral code was far removed from mine.

    Listen, Kovi may be at the back of the pack now, but he's right nonetheless: People shouldn't whine about overtaking as long as officials are waving blue flags. This may be the fastest, surest way to bring excitement back to the season without redesigning the cars for smaller fuel loads.

    Two years ago we had a big nurses and preschool teachers strike here in Denmark and we had a lot of people picketing - but a lot more were criticised for 'slacking off' and taking holidays etc.

    But part of that might be that it was long, drawn out and in the end those on strike were deemed to be asking too much...

    few years back the flight attendants on Cathay Pacific went on strike. They still worked, but refused to smile on flights. I am not sure what is more annoying - having the flight delayed or spending 12 hours in company of long faced crew ...

    Yeah but as long as it's unionised, you shouldn't be able to single out some over others as long as you recognise the union. If your union votes to strike well what are you supposed to do.....

    that is what Cathay pilots used to do, and unlike the non-smiling flight attendants the work-to-rule pilots did cause some decent delays, specially by taking their time to go through the pre-flight checklists ...

    That's hardly realistic is it, where are you going to find another job. BA's union are crackpots in my opinion, they go way too far but if you're a union member, it's a big thing to work through a strike. In theory you're striking for a reason.

    well I must say I was not aware that to have the right to strike one has to first join some union and pay fee etc . going on strike isn't much en vogue over. when people think they can get better off somewhere else, they simply quit. of course there are the exemptions like the before mentioned Cathay Pacific :-)

  • 18/03/2010 at 10:20:36 #160 Alison said

    In the UK your strike is illegal unless it's been voted for by union members. People who aren't in the union aren't allowed to strike. If they do, it just counts as unauthorised absence, you'll be sacked.

    Comment of the day from here: http://www.tou…m/article.php?id=4515

    Hollamby was happy with the cars first run, commenting:

    “Today is purely a shakedown but the car immediately feels very solid and exceptionally well balanced on all four corners. What else can I say? It goes, it stops, it turns left and right so it's been a good first run.”

    It was never supposed to be released now, Codemasters never put a set date for release. People only put a march date on it because of the new season. F1 games from Sony traditionally came out about September as well.

    It's better if they wait too, you never know what can happen throughout the course of a season. Driver firings/hirings, hopefully the implementation of the 107% rule again, etc.

    All those striking will lose their Staff Travel benefits for life
    That's scared quite a few, I'd imagine {Comment #137}

    If a trade union has called the strike and the staff member is a union member, then how is the airline expecting to enforce it without getting into legal trouble?

  • 18/03/2010 at 14:10:47 #276 Alianora La Canta said

    That's hardly realistic is it, where are you going to find another job. BA's union are crackpots in my opinion, they go way too far but if you're a union member, it's a big thing to work through a strike. In theory you're striking for a reason.

    I meant quit the union, not the job {Comment #151}

    If you do that, the union can sue depending on the nature of the contract with the union. In Britain, an employer is forbidden from forcing any employee to leave any union, even if the employer doesn't recognise the union. If sued by the union, the only realistic response the employee has is to sue the employer for enforcing a breach of contract... ...and I think you can see where that leads.

  • 18/03/2010 at 14:12:14 #277 Alianora La Canta said

    Sorry I was unclear. I agree with you. You shouldn't have to choose between being a member of your union and keeping your job with it's current benefits. {Comment #155}

    It's especially bad when in some other instances, the only way one can keep one's job with its current benefits is by being a member of the relevant union. So there isn't even a hard-and-fast rule :(

    I'm assuming so anyways. Codies have been mentioning how the damage model will be a huge part of the car in terms of the damage you can take, and most of the places that reported on the game yesterday said that the game there is in arcade mode. I can't see the fully sim mode having damage as simple as that especially with Codemasters seeming so assured about it. I know the Sony games had a very simply damage system on the arcade modes, nevertheless.

    F1 CE's damage wasn't bad. The only thing they really missed was motors failing. Their main shortcoming in that game was lack of actual penalties. No drive through, stop and go, etc.

    Yes, it was very silly and made no sense and on Monza you'd get ghost penalties for no good reason when going through the first chicane.

    Quick question about the podcasts guys....

    What format are the tags in? My phone doesn't recognise Asides or Debriefs are podcasts, presumably due to the fact the darn thing will only read ID3v1 tags (assumption, I can't verify that until I get home).

    Just read this on crash.net:

    There is also speculation that Ferrari is developing a 'B-spec' car incorporating a new, innovative diffuser – designed by former Toyota CFD guru Giuseppe Azzollini, and based upon a concept that was due to be fitted to the TF110 that never ultimately raced. Regardless of any future advances in pace and performance, though, the two scarlet machines already look to be in fine fettle indeed this year.

    Bioshock 2. The original was the type of game where it had such a good story and pace to it that a sequel would do it no justice whatsoever. When they announced the sequel, where a lot of fans who were very iffy about the idea.

    Luckily, from what I've just played, they mooooooooore than justified making a sequel. Such a fantastic game and story to it :D

    This sport has no concept of the value of its history.

    The only reason they have records is because they have been around as long. There are a surprising number of teams that arrived after them that did better than them during the period they were in the sport. McLaren even overtook their total number of wins record before Schumacher went there

    The 125 is pretty nice, it's a shifter kart and it really makes you pay attention or it'll bite you. It's fun stuff and I've built my race schedule this year around more karting, so I'm hoping to get more use out of it this year than last.

    awww... don't let the pressure affect you, whatever happens you have so many different options to choose from as well as this. They're clearly missing out anyways, everyone who knows you and your photography knows how talented you are, yet the horrible nature that is UCAS as the interview system, pretending to understand you based on a personal statement and one meeting, is not a fair way to judge one persons ability but that's the rubbish nature of unis. You're farrrrrrr too talented with photography to allow them to affect that. Plus you've had a lovely evening, the news about southampton shouldn't ruin a good evening :)

    You should e-mail Emily Davenport and Emma and tell them you have been rejected twice and ask if their is any advice they can give you.

    my textiles teacher is gonna sit down with me and go through everything. It's safe to say the whole department was shocked.. so.. hmm all i can think of is that other candidates have more of a contemporary approach to their work. Contemporary photography is favoured i think..

    I'm not sure if i'd be happy telling Emma i'd been rejected twice... it's not going to give her any confidence in me, is it? Emily said she didn't do it at uni, so i'm guessing she'd say that it wasn't all over, and repeat the advice she gave me.

    Demon Tweeks rules. Nothing about it is immoral ever

    I'm writing an essay about the effects of performance driving on the cardiovascular system. I've got to hte point about it being 60 degrees + 4 layers of nomex and so want to talk about driver cooling systems...which Demon Tweeks sell!

    Demon Tweeks (2010) show many examples of driver coolingsystems etc

    Yea... I cant blame them too much though, I was cutting it close. The tires were supposed to arrive tomorrow and I'd have to make a mad dash from when my flight lands to pick up the tires, drive like mad to my shop to pick up my spare wheels then shoot on down to my buddy's shop and beg him to work overtime to mount the tires for me.

    ah i wish everything in my life could go right at the same time. Have had an amazing evening at the performance, but got home to find that i've been rejected from Southampton Solent uni.. the pressure is on for my last 2 interviews...

    anyways, i hope everyone is alright. {Comment #497}

    *hug*

    I was until I read that... ...what are these uni admissions experts thinking? Even if the unis are going for "contemporary", what could me more contemporary than a racing car (unless that's classed as "futuristic")?

    If it eases the pressure any, the Open University does a digital photography module (T189 Digital photography: creating and sharing better images} which could help satisfy the academic side of your photography during a "gap year" and take the pressure off your other two interviews (by the look of it, it will still be possible to apply for the course after you get your replies back from the other two unis).
