Daily: 16th March 2010

By Christine Blachford

Yesterday, I trusted the daily to Mr C and it was almost two hours late, so I have snatched the reigns back for Tuesday. The conversations are mostly still revolving around Bahrain and the impact of the refuelling ban, but there is a dedicated thread for that. Instead, I will point you in the direction of some completely different topics:

I was reading the ITV season preview in the library yesterday and was astonished about how much of it was not up-to-date. Having USF1 in there was understandable. Profiling Nick Heidfeld and Pedro de la Rosa as the most likely Sauber and Campos GP drivers respectively less so. The thing that took the cake for me, though, was listing all of the Ferrari 2009 drivers' nationalities as "?" !

The TV coverage at the weekend mentioned Vettel's race engineer was Rocky, after a bit of team radio. Turns out he used to be at Newman Haas in ChampCar.

Good for Alonso and Santander but how about how dominant was Vettel?! His engineer Is Rocky, we worked together @NewmanHaas, he is the best

The discussion about F1 becoming more accessible yesterday..

Read this page and Bernie's comments about this luxury watch brand he is gonna sell at gp's:

    http://www.aut…pevine.php/id/82168]]

"These will not be the sort of watches aimed as being mass marketed in supermarkets. Instead, luxury watch boutiques will be set up in the Paddock Club – and the centrepiece of the brand will be the strictly limited edition 'F1 King'.

Ecclestone said: "I have long had a keen interest in watches and the art of watch making and I am very pleased to be announcing this deal today."

Did anyone notice the paddock club grandstand at Bahrain, looked to my eyes, empty !? Think it was at the end of the pitlane, by the exit.

it's still handy to have the info in one place, but yeah, twitter have have blunted that concept :(

Is it just me or did Legard seem to make more mistakes than he even usually does? His inability to tell teams and team mates apart is astonishing for a lead commentator. Thank goodness Brundle is there to put him right and tell him off for not listening.

On a completely different note, I love comic books and though it will never happen I'd love to see a F1 Year in Review Graphic Novel! If not that then maybe a Tokyopop style comic book using actual photos from the season - now that would be very cool!

Hi Mike. Not much I can do on the speed front, I'm afraid. I tried to slow it down for about six months and it made no difference whatsoever. We still got complaints. In the end, I just have to say I am what I am. Apologies.

If you play the sound through a program like Winamp, you can get plugins to alter the speed a file plays at (sometimes I resort to this if I'm having a bad hearing day, especially with podcasts that include people who mumble/have thick accents). That would slow Christine's voice down without changing the podcast for anyone else.

Christine and Mr C do have good diction and audio-friendly voices. Listeners also have different ways of listening, which means even the best audio production cannot satisfy every listener. It's not just people who need spoken audio slowing down - I have encountered someone on the internet who routinely listens to spoken material at least 10% faster than it was originally recorded because it lets him get through the material at the optimum pace for the way he processes sound. Hence why listener-side modifications are useful.

Surprisingly, I like BE's idea of restricting tyre usage to the softs, because if that happens, that means that the rule requiring both compounds to be used in a race is nullified, and therefore, there can be more variance on strategy. Whether the variance will actually happen is another matter.

I do regret the Thomas comment because it was bloody stupid, my only excuse is that I get annoyed when I see comments on here having a go at us lot for being anti-schumi and I thought his comment was one of those. I apologised and in hindsight, his commentary was in fact very good.

I was only trying to offer advice for Mike - because I don't think you talk fast (as I can listen to you while working) and I was comparing your speed to those of TV shows (some of which are too fast for me). Honestly, I didn't realise referring to him as "that guy" was offensive in any way, but perhaps that is a matter of opinion or maybe even the fact that my English is affected by living in different places. Who knows. I certainly don't want to scare away the newbies for sure.

Despite what each of us think of the way we speak, people do have trouble with accents as well. Listening to audio is not always easy. It was one of the things you used to learn how to do in the ol' HAM radio days

listening to this weeks show, i still thought i was worse than christine.

i think we can improve and something we're both guilty of is not pausing enough between sentences. needs more white noise i think.

keep hassling us mike, we'll keep trying.

The only thing I have to adjust is that if I am listening to the live show on my PC I have an old Hi-Fi with big speakers hooked up to it and have to turn the Bass Boost off when Mr. C. talks ;)

But don't you slow down or anything please!

    I can't! I've tried! It's physically impossible.

It could be as much down to the Red Bull energy drink effect because either it takes me a few mins to get used to it, or you're both seemingly quite fast and peppy to start with and then naturally seem to peg it back as it goes on. Might be a bit of both. I'm speaking generally rather than this show which I thought was okay personally. But that's not to say you should stop drinking it!
If my thoughts get behind I just pause for 30 seconds or so. I'd probably do that anyway to be fair. I'm just rambling really.

    Jim,

After the race I listened to the Chequered Flag Podcast (http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/cff1/) where Rob said that he thought something had fallen off the car because the telemetry was reading a large drop off in front downforce. It is odd, though, that the telemetry records something, but the driver felt nothing. Usually, I think, it's the other way around.

Malfunction seems to be a more likely cause. If it stopped working all together, he'd get a nil readout and it'd be recognized immediately.

I'm not sure if this is deception from Ferrari though, as Massa's driving over the last couple laps was rather erratic.

oddly, watching it back, i thought it looked like a planned thing from both ferrari's. massa squeezed lewis, but alonso looked to do the same.

i think i differ. i don't believe massa/rob would agree to that and i don't for one second think ferrari would start with team orders on race 1 in this non-schumi era.

After the race I listened to the Chequered Flag Podcast (http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/cff1/) where Rob said that he thought something had fallen off the car because the telemetry was reading a large drop off in front downforce. However Massa said he never felt anything so they left it at that...

I just listened to that podcast and Massa said he had a problem with his front wing toward the end of the race.

    more Kimi news for you:
2: Another miss for Raikkonen - but was his car at 100 per cent?
"Kimi Raikkonen's third WRC rally didn't go well. Hitting a rock seven kilometres into stage one and bending the steering arm wasn't a good start. Then, on stage two, he dropped more than thirty minutes when his fuel pump stopped working. Things looked up after a couple of clear stages, and he seemed to be getting into it, only for his rally to end in spectacular fashion when he rolled his C4 WRC five times. Soon after the crash Kimi said his late braking was to blame. His car had run wide and hit a bank - sending him into the series of rolls. Maybe he did brake late, but on watching footage from the stage side camera I noticed that the rear spoiler was missing from the rear of the C4 BEFORE the crash. Would Kimi have got around the corner with the help of some rear downforce? Perhaps. But after Sebastien Ogier's spoiler parted company with his identical C4 WRC in Sweden I imagine Citroen engineers are working on some stronger bolts for Jordan."

we have to upload the files to a different server for torrents. usually we remember at the time. from what i can tell though, people rarely use that method to download files.

    tis true.

on a personal level i am really annoyed at the bad reputation torrenting has, because if it wasn't known for what it is, apple could likely include it in itunes, without record companies flipping out over it.

Of course it can be - blaming him for someone else's actions would seem rather excessive - wouldn't it be better to judge him on his own actions?

I'm sorry, but these are the jokes. I can only work with what people give me.

Think of it this way. Each joke is in a box. It's either funny, or not funny. And you won't know which it is until you open up the box, but while it's in the box, it's both funny and not funny at the same time.

Or, you could just have me butcher quantum mechanics. That could be funny, too.

Because the wet is completely different with grip changing from lap to lap which is why some drivers are better than others - it's down to who can anticipate the conditions better. Also, in the wet, cars are not cornering at the speeds that they do in the dry, so their wake doesn't disrupt the guy behind allowing the follower to run closer through the corners and get a run on the next straight.

I believe that the cars at the front tend to be so well matched that having a tyre that is constant throughout the race doesn't introduce any significant variation in car performance, i.e. when cars that are quick at the start don't chew up their tyres and slow down at different stages and vice versa.

I have argued for years they need to slow the cars down to get overtaking and that is what Dernie's wet argument proves.

Of course all he is doing is saying there is more overtaking in the wet and selecting one factor that happens in the wet and saying that is the answer. It doesn't matter what tyres you have on the car if a car loses downforces following the car in front and cannot get within 0.8 of a second of it

It all changes of course if mechanical grip exceeds aero grip, but we need a massive reduction in aero for that to happen (and a return to the early 70's!).

To get good racing you need to change the circuits and you need to have cars that comply with a simple formula.

Absolutely minimum downforce. Mechanical grip much higher than aero grip. Power much higher than mechanical grip.

The German track guards at the WRC terrified me. I was sitting there taking pics by the side of the road and all of a sudden the two guys in the above pic rolled up to me and was like, "ZOIG!" or something (I dunno, I dont speak German). So I said, "what's ZOIG, or perhaps where is ZOIG?". I moved a couple feet to the left and continued, "Is ZOIG here? Or perhaps ZOIG is over there?", pointing into the distance.

Talking of blog posts I'd planned to do a quite write-up of Bahrain, and I was hoping to knock something up either for mine or here to tell you what it was like trying to follow a race without Twitter or comments, as a follow-up or counterpoint to what James wrote last year. I've run out of time for either.

It was brand new and 4 of us who went to work there had the same flat on floors 2,3,4 and 5. There was a lot of grafitti then on the Metro etc but not on vans or streets

It is nice, looks great. A bit jealous of anyone who can go to a foreign country and live for a while, especially France, I like France. I couldn't do it. I went to Scotland for 9 months and that was foreign enough. ;)
Paris is covered in graffiti. I've only been near it once and I was on the Periphique (which is like the North Circular in London), graffitti everywhere.

Tell ya what, I've got my netbook, if the power lasts I'll write something on the plane and email it when I land (I've got to kill 2 hours in a small airport before my bus arrives). So far it eats power so no promises.

When I was in Paris the biggest problems was dog mess so lifting your head to look for grafitti meant you were likely to step in something nasty.

Yea, it's not super huge and the track itself is relatively low key (most people get lost going to it the first time). They have two levels, lower level is cars and upper level is bikes. They also have a little shrine to Jim Clark on a nature walk along the back of Hockenheimring.

What made it more funny was between rally stages they have to drive on regular roads to the next stage. Well all of us wound up in traffic, including Loeb and a Stobart several car lengths back. The GO!!!!!! stuck in traffic was golden comedic value.
