Daily: 22nd November 2009

Published

By Christine Blachford

I had a bit of an idea, concerning the daily, in that guest writers could come along and take over the threads for a while, promoting their work and linking to the stories of the day that they find fascinating, rather than you always hearing from me. I've set up a wiki page for volunteers, and although the details are sketchy at the moment, let us know if you'd like to get involved.

  • In charity news, long-time commentor Andy is growing a moustache in November and encouraging donations for doing so. We've given a little bit to support the cause and you can do the same here. Also, if you want to see the moustache in progress, here ya go!
  • It is the second roundup of posts from Pitlane Fanatic, with Something For the Weekend II. I really like these recommendations, and particularly enjoy the roundup of Thursday Thoughts. Excellent stuff from Jackie, keep it up please!

That'll do it for now. There should be a live debrief later on today, so if you have an hour or two to spare on a Sunday night, we should be going live about 7ish. Don't hold me to that and we'll be in the comments to keep you updated. See you there.

under the image of google's autocomplete suggestion in the last post, the author has written "Maybe it’s just mad you keep slamming the door in its face."

its in grey text and when I first looked at the site I missed these little gems. they add to the hilarity

it's not Italy ;) I work with top class professional people but the city has this young youthful feel because of all the college students here. And there's the river and the water (I just had mountains for two years). I did a duck tour (truck and boat thing) of boston today and learnt some history and cruised around on the water. The weather will get brutal but this place just feels good to me. Nice to speak my own language of course too. I think a lot of my sense of humour lies in the jokey English so people get my jokes here and I am what I am. Very nice.

the easiest way is via the free flickr app, and a free flickr account.

you could also email pics to the drop from the phone, but note the email address changed recently.

Australia absolutely dominated the game and should have won by 20 points at least. They had won break where they had 3 player overlapping with one Scottish player defending and instead of just passing down the line till there was a gap they tried this enormous floating pass to winger but the ball went about 10 yards forward

I loved watching welsh play six nations (five?) the last few years. They are going pretty well but no offence, a draw with Ireland and a loss to Scotland is hard to take even if Scotland was named after me, but before I was born.

Six nations since Italy was added about ten years ago. I was surprised that the manager of Australia is a Kiwi but then we have an Englishman

have made a tiny update to live commenting / real-time this evening. am not expecting issues but you never know.

in the past, every request to look for new comments resulted in a small amount of data being returned, regardless of whether there were any new comments.

it was only about 4kb for each request, not a huge overhead even on mobiles. the data returned was used to update the "status" message at the top of the page.

however, have now found a way to make that small amount of data redundant, so if there are no new comments available, no data is returned at all. a small side-effect is the "status" message might not be reporting correctly for the next couple of hours (just until all the cached code gets refreshed).

All the singers on British reality TV (aside from the contestants themselves) seem to lip synch, so he's not alone there. Admittedly, I haven't watched a big sample of it, but from what I have heard, real singing occurs in places observed by fewer people.

This is in contrast to the British equivalent, where the X Factor winner is guaranteed to be Christmas No. 1 (though this year the runner-up of Britain's Got Talent - a show whose rights are owned by the same man) - may have something to say/sing about it).

It means someone you follow thinks that his/her followers might be interested in that tweet. Which is fine if your tastes and whoever you are following are identical. Think of it as "Recommended Tweet".

Frequently they are not, though in this particular case it was a mildly interesting tweet and therefore justifiable.

Twitter though is completely and utterly useless on the 360. Why leave a game and hunt it down on the dashboard just to tweet, then return to a game?

actually the worst Christmas song ever was the time he put the lyrics of the Lords Prayer to the music of Auld Lang Syne. I'd just blanked it out of my memory since it thankfully was not Christmas #1 (thanks Westlife!) but now its back, and I'm scared to sleep in case I dream about it.

    Queen and disappointment in the same sentence? {Comment #347}

Any song that makes Christmas No. 1 despite not designed to cash in on Christmas is likely to be an exception to the "Christmas No. 1s are disappointments" rule. The litmus test for me is whether the song would have been released the previous Easter had it been finished to the same standard at that point. Hence why "Another Brick In The Wall" doesn't s an exception to the rule as well.

I will concede that the last three of the songs I have in my list do fit this rule; "Too Much" came to me via one of my brother's friends who needed somewhere to discard the album on which it came, "Sound of the Underground" sounded like a good idea at the time and "Hallelujah", for some reason, was a free download on last.fm earlier this year. I will concede that depending on my mood, I still like all three.

    Charts are over-rated when you can make your own at last.fm. {Comment #313}

According to my last.fm profile, my Top 10 for this week is:

1 - Seether (Feat. Amy Lee) – Broken (up 5)
2 - Infernal – Self Control (Radio) (new entry)
3 - Beyoncé – Sweet Dreams (new entry)
    4 - Kelly Clarkson – Irvine (up 17)
5 - Savage Garden – To the Moon and Back (new entry)
    6 - Murray Gold – Doomsday (up 15 from previous week's chart)
6 - Destiny's Child – Dangerously in Love (new entry, last seen at #1 from 20 September chart)
6 - Kelly Clarkson – Can I Have a Kiss (new entry, last seen at #93 from 19 July chart, which was down 39 from the 5 July chart)
6 - Evanescence – My Tourniquet (new entry, last seen at #93 from 19 July chart and was new to that week's chart)
6 - Mariah Carey – It's Like That (new entry, previously seen before 7 June)
6 - Madonna – Papa Don't Preach (new entry, last seen at #67 from 7 June chart)
6 - Gwen Stefani – Wind It Up (down 5 from previous week's chart)

Since the #6 songs are tied on 3 plays each (partly because PDA and hi-fi plays aren't counted), the difficulty of me generating an individual chart is illustrated.

It will be interesting to see what it comes up with for a Christmas #1, since I do have a Christmas CD collection.

    LOL great comment!

Don't think much to the circuit design - although it looks as though it has passing opportunities at least ;)

In some places maybe but they all have sections where two cars side by side won't get through without crashing. Trouble is all those young guys think one race can make their career so all their logic is abandoned in favour of ridiculous gambles.

That's because they are told that Macau is the signature race and that some F1 drivers have won it in the past...

That start looked crazier than a short track race on iRacing!

it was difficult enough trying to explain to him that the car had to go in the slots. He was convinced the slots were the track lines and water to put the car in the middle.

It's the only time now that all the top drivers from the top F3 championships get together. It should establish who is the best but often it establishes who is best at avoiding accidents.

Some big names have made their reputation there. A certain German once rammed a bloke called Hakkinen because he couldn't overtake him. Mika crashed out and the German bloke won.

That's pretty logical for a kid that age. Most of them would ignore the lines

there is one in St Ives?. yeah.. it's one of the best uni's for photography too but it is just so far away. i can barely go away for a week's holiday without feeling homesick. living on my own, with loads of new people, being so far away from home for such a long period of time is unthinkable. Uni is going to be a big enough step for me already as i'm really not good with change (you may have noticed). I like the idea of living close enough to be able to pop home over a weekend if i really need to..

I know. I understand. Thing is, you're still taking the hit for the depreciation on your car and the insurance, maintenance etc for 3 years in return for very little driving of it. If you don't need it regularly, you might well find you're cheaper getting taxis around in the holidays than keeping the car all year round.

My sister and I once went out canooing on the Mosel and we got to the middle of the river and she decided she was too tired. We started to get swept away. The instructor had to chase after us and tow us back to stop us getting washed away. It was so humiliating.

I was only in a canoe once. It was all going really well for the first couple of minutes until I started thinking. I realised how stable it was and started wondering why it wasn't rocking around as I paddled. I decided to see how stable it was and it turned upside down and threw me out.

the quoted phrase of 'ships carry boats' is how I remember it (grandad was in the royal navy, dad was in the royal australian navy). Yes, ships are just big boats, but ships carry life boats because 'life ships' would just sound weird :)

My problem wasn't falling in as such. We were at Loch Doon in July so the being Scotland the water temperature was about ten degrees. The water looked about 4 feet deep so once I realised I was upside down in the water I decided to flip over and kick of the bottom. Unfortunately the bottom was not bottm but vegetation. By the time I had tried to kick off it a couple of times I was further down and panicking. Had I known I was in deep water I would have been fine but I didn't

I had seatbelts and a crash helmet and my head was well below the boom. Landed upside down quite a few times but I was belted in and the rear axle was so wide there was no way of being hurt. The closest I managed was when two of us were running up and down some hard wet sand close to the edge of the sea as the tide was coming in. What we didn't realise was that our bit of beach was a bit higher than the bit behind us until we found ourselves on a rapidly decreasing dry patch surrounded by sea. We had to just build up as much speed as possible and aim for dry land.

How often have you seen a goalkeeper sent off, his replacement sent off before he gets the shirt on and someone else sent off all resulting from the same incident. It is definitely one for football fans. The consultation between the referee and the linesman is because the team in red only have 6 players on the pitch so the match had to be abandoned when the team that scored from the penalty just took a 3-1 lead with very little time left. Had he not sent one of those players off they would have won but now there will be all sort of disciplinary hearings

First there is the Merc connection.

I posted this section from Joe's post at the time but I guess you missed it

Two years ago, when Wolff bought into HWA there started to be rumours that the company would like to be involved in Formula 1. To explain: HWA was set up by Hans-Werner Aufrecht (hence the company name HWA). Aufrecht was the founder in 1967 of AMG, which was established to tune Mercedes-Benz machinery for higher performance. As the Stuttgart company became more interested in the sport and in performance road cars so AMG expanded and in the end Aufrecht was bought out and AMG became a Mercedes division and brand. HWA took over the Mercedes-AMG entries in the DTM. It later expanded to be the provider of the Mercedes-Benz Formula 3 engines, which of late are being to referred to as Mercedes-HWA engines. When Wolff bought into HWA there were the first rumours that the company would like to be in Formula 1 as a secondary Mercedes-Benz team. His aim was to expand the company. HWA currently employs 224 employees and has not only static engine test rigs but also transient dynos. There was also talk of engine deals in America.

Presumably he is looking to sell the team before he dies and he will want to get it back to where it should be by then. Everyone believes the Merc engine is the best and most teams want it. He is now in a position to have a long term partnership agreement like McLaren have with Force India. When McLaren make their own engine presumably FIF1 will use that freeing up more Mercedes motors.

HWA have connections with a lot of sponsors who may fancy F1 and they have a way of testing young drivers and giving them a track program. Being on an F1 team young driver program with a DTM race program could be appealing to a young driver and the team know what they are learning and how they are developing. They will get experience of high tech cars and can be compared to established drivers

It will still be an independent team but he needs an engine so he may as well have the best. HWA do their own (Merc) engines in F3 so they may be planning an F1 engine of their own eventually
