I am slightly late with this daily post, as Mr C and myself were caught up playing the new Wii game. On the strength of Lukeh's review, we went out and bought it and then hijacked our inlaws for their console. Apologies for that. Elsewhere:

  • Lou has written up a post about her experience meeting Jenson Button at a book signing in London. It's a really great read, if only for the bit about Jenson describing F1 photography.
  • Whilst we are playing our game, we're also keeping an eye on the Children in Need telethon in the UK. Lewis Hamilton made a brief appearance, visiting a centre for disabled children, and playing some games with them. Button also popped up plugging the various ways you can donate. Good stuff!
  • There was a small amount of F1 news yesterday, as Williams took on a new shareholder. Joe has written about this and as ever, explained what it really means, so it is definitely recommended reading. It's been a quiet couple of days, though, just as we hoped for!

That's all for now. We are into the beautiful weekend now, so as ever, let us know what you're up to and I will see you in the comments.

    #sidepodspace update

    There are two astronauts already camping out in the ISS airlock in preparations for tytomorrow's spacewalk. The spacewalk is scheduled to start at 8:18am Eastern/1:18pm UK. Unless the weather intervenes and deprives me of the opportunity to go out and offer advice to a football referee I will probably miss it.

    The main activity is to take a 7 ton cargo carrier (ELC) which is currenty dangling on the shuttle's robotic arm and transfer it to the main ISS arm then dock it to the station so that all the cargo inside it can be transferred.

    I hope not because there are far more deserving drivers out there.

    Baffles me how she remains in DTM. I know half the time she runs with previous years' Mercedes, but her racing career has been trundling though the foothills of averageness for sometime now.

    Brilliant. I restarted career mode, blew Torro Rosso away with my driving at Monza, then in my first practice session in Australia I leave the pits, miss the corner completely and head straight ahead into the wall. Great start!

    Yes, but it's near impossible! If you hold the wii remote sideways, Accelerate is 2 and brake is either 1 or b. Gears are up and down on the arrow pad. (KERS is the a button)

    yes. but the gear icon is too small and too far right to see it and the track at the same time.

    2 = accelerate
    1 = brake
    right = shift up
    left = shift down

    it was worth it though to get so close to the front. Eventually all the drunk idiots from the general admission further back tried to push their way to the front, and they were deliberately looking for groups of girls to get through as the path of least resistance, so I got a bit battered, but the fanclub is pretty good at looking out for each other so all the big guys were trying to protect us from them.

    I did, the security guards were great because they were handing out cups of water throughout the whole show. They probably never reached the people at the back, but I got plenty.

    haha they don't do it at all shows, it's an Eddie Vedder thing, he is obsessive about crowd safety after some people died at a Pearl Jam show in 2000. Between every song he pleads with the crowd to look out for their neighbours and make sure everyone is OK.

    I never really never liked the idea of budget cuts feeling the sport and teams could self regulate and cannot really remember the time of the "pay" drivers. It just seemed that it was not a highlight time in F1 history and we could be entering a period where the best that could be said is there will be a lot of material for the F1Rejects website.

    So there is such a continuum of drivers with financial backing. But is Lopez any good... the best I can find is the following

    "On his day he was bloody fast though, and held the GP2 lap record at Circuit Paul Ricard for a good few years. Considering that the championship conducts about 75% of its testing at the track, the fact that his time stood for so long evidenced just how speedy he could be… when it all came together."

    Steven always says fastest laps are totally meaningless - so he still looks like F1-reject material together with the team.

    I read that bit and immediately wonder what sort of returns Red Bulll has had.

    After what you said in the podcast on the Mercedes Day I felt so sorry for Kovy - again it seems talent was somehow crushed rather early on - do you think he could rebound if he went to a new team? Should Mercedes actually consider him for the second seat rather than Robert (I do not like people who complain in open and after winning one race feel they should get the number 1 status - just my preference).

Jenson left and I think he knows more than we know, it was not the money, and Jenson would not be fooled by the Macca glitz. He also knows Lewis will be tough to beat. If I were Kimi and I actually do want to drive in F1 next year I would be visiting Jenson to say Hello?

    there was definitely something strange in all this. but I don't think Brawn's speed next year is part of it, they switched development in the middle of the year the new car, they should be pretty advanced by now.

    A lot of people have questioned whether this is not some sort of Bravado on Brawn's part. They were still introducing various new bits and were running out of money as they had no significant sponsors (eventually resorting to a sponsor for this race series). Where would they get the money to do both developments. In all honesty Rubens was not that much off the pace at the end than he was a quarter way into the season.

    If they didn't have good plans for 2010 he'd have ducked out of team principal for next year....

    I am not saying there was no development - but can it compete with the likes of Red Bull with DeSeb, Macca with Lewis/Button and Ferrari with its new boy Alonso? All teams way better funded and with apparently stronger drivers (Button might be the exception but the rest...)

    I read the brought forward and hols delay somewhere else...

    Hmmmm.... I shall think where and let you know....

    Anyway I think the driver thing won't be decided until Ross's return....

    And Merc would not have planned a major announcement the day before Ross flew off if they could help it.... for no other reason than, in management terms, for the key guy to not be on site when the staff must be looking for reassurance and information is not well planned...

    And Ross is too astute at man management not to know that....

    I think they feel that they coped this year with a less than stellar line-up (Sorry Lou) and we don't know who will be in the open seat yet....

    It could be that the main competition will be Red Bull....

    Macca have to do a lot of down sizing which will be hard... and it isn't clear that Ferrari really have got good engineering direction at present... Ross would know more about the current Ferrari capabilities than most and may not be worried....

    Joe agrees with me about Kimi - the understeery thing is an excuse. The two most talented drivers on the grid are Lewis and Alonso and the team principals have now added Vettel to that list. Kimi's insistence on driving in only the best car is something of an admission that his recent lack of sparkle has harmed his CV. Were he to take the Mercedes and it is only the fourth best he would end up in no better situation than he was in this season with the F60. Finally Brawn would have designed a car with Jenson in mind - so it will be "understeery" to neutral not an oversteery car like Kimi likes! There is reason to believe that a car set up with as neutral as possible will be the best to cope going from supremely heavy to supremely light on fuel.

    The key bit is...

    "The announcement of that [the Merc buyout] – via a hastily arranged conference call with German and British media on Monday morning – suggests that Brawn and Mercedes felt the Button defection was imminent and wanted to get their positive news in first. "

    This should not have been hastily arranged if they really wanted to announce the news on Monday.... it would have been better orchestrated....

    When evoking the understeery thing - I could say that was why Nick was disadvantaged in the BMW Sauber 08 car compared to Robert. Still the record book shows Robert beat Nick in 2008, now move one year on...

    One reason why Nick could be good at the Brawn Mercedes is that he has a similar style to Jenson smooth and easy on the tyres - there is reason to believe that a more neutral car might be better when going from a heavy to a light fuel load. Again having to qualify light and start heavy is going to produce some interesting strategies.

    I agree with you - Jenson' "defection" certainly sprung the Mercedes planning operations into play.

    I think Brawn/Fry have to take some of the blame - we certainly got the impression there was not the money to pay Jenson -then all of a sudden Jenson goes to another team offering up to 50% less than was on the table (then got withdrawn).

    They went on an instinct that once Jenson visited Macca they had lost their "family silverware" - hence Brawn saying Jenson was out of contract for having visited Macca head quarters.

    I think Ross knew that would be the result on Friday evening when this happened....

    "After Button visited McLaren and made it public, with quotes from his manager Richard Goddard about Button wanting to be ‘”valued”, Ross Brawn made his feelings clear to Button in a phone call on Sunday. He withdrew the offer on the grounds of breach of contract, he told Bob McKenzie in the Express. “I was very disappointed at the way things finished up with Jenson,” said Brawn."

    Withdrawing the offer left Jense with nowhere to go but Macca.... Ross knew and would have tee'd up Merc before he did that with Jense... hence the hasty Press release on Monday....

    And we'll never know if Jense really wanted to stay as he lost that opportunity when Macca used him to showboat....

    It's clear that the higher offer was on the table before Jense went to Woking and I can only assume that the "Not being valued" stuff and the public visit were Goddard's misguided way of getting the fee up even higher...

    It would have been fine for Goddard to go alone, and quietly... like the Robertsons had earlier in the week.... as Macca couldn't have done the public Alan Henry article in that case....

    The point of it is that you book the appointment and then when you arrive say "I'd like to buy a Mac Mini please." Then you leave with the Mac Mini. YOu could be in and out in less than 10 minutes if you're lucky, with no need to queue.

    unless i'm missing something... all macs are the same. have a play with an imac, it's the same experience.

    the only thing you can't check it what it looks like on your monitor. but that would be a mental thing to expect anyhow.

    You shouldn't be able to see up a skirt/dress as the glass is frosted. Or was it one of those mini skirts that can also be described as "a belt"? ;)

    It was a fairly short skirt. Not indecent. I definitely saw right up it. The glass of the steps is frosted, if you're standing behind the steps, it isn't.

    Well... ...I'd expected possibly-unhelpful staff, strangely positioned products and inconsistent pricing. Surprisingly, only the last of these proved the case - half the software had no prices and the other half had illogical pricing structures. As in, last year's Norton Internet Security was over twice the price of this year's despite being an inferior product (and the same price as Norton 360 3.0, which includes this year's Norton Internet Security as part of a bigger package).

    However, I'd expected there to be someone on the till, even if were literally asleep or engrossed in texting a friend. To have nobody on the till whatsoever defeats the point of it being a store and is an invitation to make a big huge fuss by walking off with the item you intended to buy, or else lobbing it at the corner helpdesk where most of them were hidden.

    As in, last year's Norton Internet Security was over twice the price of this year's despite being an inferior product (and the same price as Norton 360 3.0, which includes this year's Norton Internet Security as part of a bigger package).

    cannot be inferior to McAfee

    on the topic of money and Jenson... he said in an interview that he is getting paid less at Mclaren than he would have done at Brawn... this confused me..

    Brawn offer 8million plus up to 4 million in bonus points for two years. Macca offered 6 million for three years.

    Yes and there is a reason - the 2009 car was constructed with the aid of 150+ million - 2010 was designed on a budget of about 1/5 of that.

    Do yuy want an guest post on this topic - I have been collecting the figures which do not make much sense if you use the word budget.

    It has to be more than that - he genuinely wants to defend his title and it is clear he feels he is in with a better chance to compete against Lewis using the same equipment.

    really? i think he's just throwing himself a new challenge.. because from the sounds of things he has no idea about the Mclaren car or anything, yet knows Mercedes/ Brawn (i shall continue to call them Brawn for as long as i can..) should have a strong car too.

    I heard something about if you use Windows you might get viruses, it may be rumour though.

    I am still intrigued why Mercedes would want to occupy (have built?) a building that looks like a Darlek - sory I just cannot get that building out of thoughts - its weird. Then to put on top of the poor Darlek their logo twirling around - that just bizarre.

    Really, but I do not know what this protection is, I just did an install of Fedora 12 - took 15 mins and everything is there working with Open Office, a Browser, PDF readers, unzipping functions and its absolutely secure.

    the ones about windows xp? From 2004?

    Lest just say I wouldn't put mysql, php, or apache on the Internet without patching either

    Sure I just keep everything updated - actually that was my issue with McAfee and Windows automatic updates they got into a dispute and broke one of labs all 30 PCs - Window update deleted the original files then McAfee prevent the install of the updates - brilliant thinking guys.
