We have reached yet another Friday, and that means it is the end of the week. Hurrah for Fridays. We had a nice quiet non-news day yesterday, which is exactly what we all needed, and I am hoping the weekend will hold more of the same. Meanwhile, here's how we're keeping ourselves occupied:
- We finally posted the F1 Debrief show of our day out at Brooklands thanks to Jackie. It's taken a while to come together, but it's a good guide to how the event unfolded with some bonus audio from those speaking on stage, including Ross Brawn and Lewis Hamilton.
- If that just increases your appetite for all things Debrief, then perhaps you can spare some time to recall your favourite moments on the show this year, and note them on the wiki? Get this, I even give my permission for you to look through the archives. Just this once.
- Finally, in the spirit of at least some F1 news, Nick Fry spoke out yesterday about not releasing Button from his contract before it expires naturally. We mentioned this in F1 Minute, and posted a rather scary photo of the man (Fry, not Button) on the Big Picture as well.
That'll do it for now. Don't forget, the Friday Fun game will be along in a few hours, if you feel like having a go at something a little bit silly for the last day of the week. I will see you in the comments.

I would have gotten them mailed out if I could but they are fan club tickets (ie, the best ones in he stadium) so they deliberately only have box-office pick up with photo ID on the day of the show to prevent people putting them on eBay and scalping for massive prices.

I have my fingers super crossed that Liam and Pearl Jam do at least one Crowded House song. In Perth they did Throw Your Arms Around Me, but it's Melbourne, they have to do Crowded House!

it seems to work, but the fact they sell them in pairs is annoying when I tend to go to things like this by myself :) I am just glad I found someone to buy the other one, at face value of course.
Sadly in previous tours the fanclub tickets have been better because they have done venues that are seated so they have a 'fanclub' area right at the front. Because where they are playing tonight has no seats the only benefit of fan club tickets is being let in 30 minutes before the general public so we can stake out the front.
It doesn't stop people trying to push us out of the way for the next 6 hours which as a very short person, happens to me a lot :( From what I have heard though the bigger taller more manlier members look out for the little short girly ones though so hopefully I shall be protected and actually be able to see.
oh. I didn't know that. There goes my theory!

when i was younger and even more stupid, i used to queue from about 10am for arena/stadium gigs.
no idea if that's the global norm, or just in europe.
I can understand it for the thousands of GA people but I figured fan club early entry meant queueing was not necessary, but apparently it is. Some people have been there since yesterday. I didn't realise the fan club would have that many members.
Depends on the band. People do that for massive bands all over the world methinks.

I wonder how it works for them considering where they will be queuing to get in is a different place from where they have to go at 2pm to get their tickets. Maybe the line will move as a whole :D

I flew back from Madrid with Easyjet on 9th November, and there was a driver, I assume returning from the last round in Jarama the previous day, with a superleague jacket on and an autosport journo, looked rather like mark hughes, but taller than I imagined !

I always wonder if we have the full story. Mind you, Jenson has form for jumping ship when it suits him.
Regardless, I don't think it's good form for someone like Nick Fry to air dirty laundry in public like this. You don't see Ferrari or Mclaren act this way very often. I think, more likely, his is just annoyed with the "other" silver team.

well, after Alonso they were all waiting for Kimi, after Kimi it Button's turn to hold the key to the market. Now it is combination of Mercedes GP selection and that may have something to do with what Renault will do and what future holds for Sauber. Still many variables left ...

I'll be honest - first few laps I was a proper Tim. Tiptoeing around the track getting used to the controls and I was, what, 6 or 7 seconds off the pace. Now I'm starting to really get used to it and fighting Hamilton at the top. I'm still in FP1 but I'm just loving the practise session alone, let along the rest of the race weekend!

Of course, the only problem is that when you introduce any form of metrics (eg 'geotagging' tweeters and applying a reputation system to help rank news sources) people will find a way to fiddle them. i knew i'd not said that right. basically....when your accelerating or braking using the sticks of a normal controller, theres quite alot of control over the acceleration and braking....
when your using the wii wheel, how much angle movement is there for accelerating or braking. is it full or or full off? or is there a bit of movement so you can accelerate gradually?
I'm not sure what the camera car does? I set myself up to get angles or something to record you?
Yeah, that and driving both in front and behind me to get shots. It's not a hard job :)

The idea of Ferrari still paying $millions to Skewey to test drive (and market) their road cars whilst he is trying to beat them on the track in a Merc is truly funny.... or is that Trulli funny...
And I can't see him going to Merc either...

Nico is not exactly an old veteran! One reason to hire Nick is that he is good at car development. Next year with full fuel tanks your are going to need experienced drivers unless you cannot afford them like Sir Frank's team.
Nick's good enough to develop a car - if he's the one, he'll get a 1-year deal at best.

There is a three day young driver test starting on I think the 1st of December which should give loads of data as there will not be experienced drivers there.
As far as Kimi goes - I am sure that he will evaluate Mercedes, but the decision will be based on it being capable of winning the championship. The problem is that towards the end of this season I would say that McLaren, Red Bull and Toyota were all quicker than the Brawns.
Because all their money was going to the 2010 car... and Toyota definitely wasn't quicker than Brawn by season's end.

Until they get Vettel - that is why it would be unfair on young driver to get the seat. I think the negotiation failure with Jenson actually was around the length of the contract. Nowhere have I seen that it was for a multi-year like the McLaren offer.
Brawn/Merc offered 2 years - Nick Fry said so himself on Autosport. McLaren offered 3 (which I'm guessing is 2 + 1).
In qualifying it was dam fast especially at Brazil. Actually even BMW Sauber was closing in on the speed of the Brawn.

Reality check Kobayashi was incredible without any obvious racing success previously! The Toyota was actually quite fast and more importantly one of the easier cars to drive. The Ferrari F60 was a complete swine to drive hence Fisi's poor showing despite being a veteran driver.

It was 8mill plus 4mill performance, so more basic than Macca but...
I believe Ross rang Jenson and took it off the table after his visit to McLaren was in the papers...
In which case Jense may have had Macca or nothing in the end...
My guess is that Merc (as well as Ross) were steaming mad about the visit ... and it spoiled the timing and effect of their big announcement...
The only thing going for a Kimi call up is that it was only after talks broke down with Kimi that they went for Jense as Kimi was Macca's first choice... so the only tit for tat that Merc could do would be to get Kimi.... (I am not expecting that though)...
from press releases i just get the opinion that Nick was, like myself, in denial that Jenson would ever move. Jenson has been there for seven years, and throughout that time Nick basically idolised him. When everything was confirmed Nick was obviously upset. I think he's regretting what he said by now.
OK explain this Toyota released both drivers and certainly were looking for replacements. John Howett kept re-iterating that the cars were faster than what was delivered bu the drivers. I did not believe this (more I did not wish to believe it) since Timo is one of my favourite drivers, but after looking at the results of qualifying 2, fastest lap and grid positions and final positions - I have to say John is right and I was wrong with my subjective opinion. Now both Timo and Jarno scored a healthy number of points yet both failed to get rated by the the team bosses in their top 10 drivers. Do I need to say any more?

No question Jenson was second choice to Kimi at Macca. Kimi is shrewd and he will only drive for Merc if there are good prospects. While I hope there are I do not think it is guaranteed. Were I Jenson I would have taken the salary cut and gone off to McLaren.
For me at least I have taken the trouble to collect and start processing the data this year! This is not to say that it was good at all circuits it was hopeless at Monaco.

No comparison! I think McLaren have also done well with the Jenson deal. Also I think that Brawn also were not being entirely fair to Jenson - it is not all Jenson being disloyal. I have every belief that Lewis will have his work cut out beating Jenson.

The marriage break up of Mercedes and McLaren does this mean Mercedes could if it wanted to sell engines to Red Bull (assuming FIA will approve)? This might be of some significance in the future.
Toyota have always blamed everything but the cause of their problems. Their problems were caused by a management system that required low level decisions to be made in Japan. An issue would come up and be refered to Japan who would give it protracted consideration and send the decision back. So decisions that should have taken 20 minutes took 2 days.
Toyota blaming dribers for the team's performance is hardly new. First it was Salo and McNish then da Matta etc and now it is Trulli and Glock. If Trulli is not capable of getting a performance out of the car by their measurement you have to ask why they have kept him in it this long. The fact that he has driven for them for so long says this is bull.
AUTOSPORT last week had a history of the team and that identifies the problem quite clearly. In 139 races over 8 seasons they scored a total of 278.5 points which is an average 2.003 points per race. In 2004 Mike Gascoyne joined the team too late to do anything about that year's car which scored 9 points or 0.5 points per race. His car and his style of management in 2005 delivered 88 points or 31.6% of the points the team won during its 8 seasons and an average of 9.78 which is their best year by a long way.
Gascoyne designed the following season's car but was fired during that season and that year the team scored 35 points. There is the answer to why they have failed. The most successful season they ever had was the one where Gascoyne tried toturn their management system on its head.
We keep hearing Brawn's results were because they had the magical double diffuser. Toyota had one of those too and ended 5th in the constructor's championship. So someone has to carry the can so they resort to their favourite excuse and blame the drivers.

The only thig Merc can do is bluff that they are in talks with Schumacher as he is the only other top driver around. I am saying the potential for being the third fastest car is there. Personally the drivers probably did not deliver - but their team work and strategies were often strange to say the least. Certainly it is not all the drivers fault but the Team Bosses did not think much of the pair, just like Heidfeld and Kovy they got virtually no points.

It depends on the details of the contract they have with McLaren. The contract rather than the shareholding gave McLaren the veto. For me one of the big attractions to Mercedes leaving McLaren is that they can then supply engines to Newey and Brawn knowing that they are responsible for most of the championship wins in recent years
I don't doubt that, it's just when the race or qualli is on this year, we've seen John in the motorhomes with the rest of the friends and family.

Mother's tend to get panicky so most of them stay away. The only one I can remember being at a lot of races was Damon Hill's but F1 wasn't exactly new to her and she knew a lot of people in the paddock
Could be but their primary interest was Kimi - they even said they were interested in Nick - that was simply to get the drivers to make up their minds - it was not serious and my blog post was somewhat tongue in cheek on the subject. One thing is certain a driver is going to be luckier at Macca or Ferrari than any other team if you look at it over a few years.
They signed some good drivers. Trulli is genuinely quick. McNish given a couple of seasons could still have been really good but every time they needed someone to blame the drivers got it in the neck even though that never changed anything. Anyone looking at the stats can see that the only thing they ever did that made a significant change to their performance was sign Gascoyne.
Ah but it's easy, using the Toyota Management method, I can use data to:
Collect data on all of the drivers' finishes
Complete a normality test on that data
Work out the mean, and standard deviation on that.
Carry out a design of experiment - probably a 2-sample T test on that data. Check the P value of that data, if it's below 0.05 I can reject the null and then choose Piquet jnr to drive for my team as number one driver.
Using my result I can present to the management board that I'm 98% confident that Piquet will be a good move for the team.
In the mean time it's now 2012 and F1's moved on so I'll repeat the exercise again and spend another £300 million in the process.

What I noted was really dump choices of when to bring drivers in and attempting to avoid traffic. I know it won't happen but in the 1-million chance that Mercedes employ Nick - combined with Brawn brains he will haul in the points if not the wins.

It's a great system when making a mistake on a car can mean recalling thousands of cars and spending millions repairing them but useless when you need to make fast decisions in F1
i'm feeling slightly happier about the whole Mclaren thing after seeing how happy Jenson was yesterday etc. However if it was only f1 that was troubling me that would be easily fixed :)

Grrr! iRacing is great, but so bloody frustrating!
You have to earn a safety racing by, well not hitting stuff. Therefore if you get into an accident both drivers get penalty points.
This system seems to work fine on the roadcourses, but it seems that the people who race on short track ovals think that you can weave, chop and ram all you like. I have just had another race ruined because a guy took offence to being lapped, rammed the guy who lapped him and I got involved in the accident. Why should I get penalised for that? I'm never gonna earn enough safety points to advance at this rate!!!

There are always examples of drivers whose junior careers and F1 results don't tie up. Jan Magnussen was going to be the next Senna but he was lazy, disorganised, unfit and so when he got into cars where he had to put some effort in his career came to a grinding halt and he wasted his immense talent. Mansell is the opposite. Nothing special in F3 and broke his neck. Chapman gave him an F1 drive and it worked.
In general though form tends to stay more or less level

:o Jenson was signing for almost 2 hours last night! i didn't realise he stayed for a whole hour longer than he needed to.. how nice :)
I get the opinion that Jenson's been repeating himself alot in interviews in the last few days. How is he still calm, i'd be so frustrated if i were him.. that's the 4th interview i've seen/read with him where he tells us the same information, but with a different interviewer.. poor him.

I had an old college friend who's at Uni in Bristol who called me today saying he was getting Jenson's book signed today. He was worried it wouldn't get signed. Looks like he did!
