I am declaring 19th Nov to be LCLT day - the day when we give the much-ignored Live Commenting solution some love. I know it does have it's hard-core fans, and that is excellent, but I think we need to raise awareness to the Live Commenting single-thread goodness. Perfect for tracking each conversation separately, and more importantly, posting your thoughts in the right place. If you haven't been there for a while, why not give the LCLT a try today, and see what you think?
- Elsewhere today is also Thursday thoughts day. We'll post a question at some point this morning, and if you are a blogger and feel like having a go, why not type out a few words and let us know how you find it? Naturally, all suggestions for questions are noted and they do not have to be about the news of the day or anything like that.
- There was plenty of that news though, as we are still recovering from the idea of Kimi not racing next year, wondering at the bizarre pairing of Button and Hamilton, and celebrating at the confirmation of Spa. When will the actual off-season begin?

It has been a while when so little was sorted.
I've been racking my 29 y.o. brain trying to think of an off-season when there was this much change in the sport in terms of teams and drivers.
I love it... apart from the relentlessness. I could use a break of a week before the next wave of rumour/announcement/etc.
We are only a couple of weeks from the three day young driver test and you know that is going to be a rumour generator
I am surprisingly tired so I'm genuinely having an early night for once, rather than a 10-minute-earlier-than-last-night night.
I need to be quite busy with revision tomorrow night so I will probably skip Thursday Thoughts this week. I do hope to post the final Preview blog post of the year though. Goodnight..

the simplest answer i can give you is....
GP3 is GP2's answer to F2 (although arguably not as good) BUT, it basically fills a gap.
all the new series that come along are arguably not needed, but until people stop wanting race drives, then they'll still exist.
I may take Mr C's point of view and dismiss everything non-F1 ;-)

Just to let you know, I am working on a telephone interview and you just made me cough up some water out of my mouth with that comment. The person on the other end of the must think I am nuts for her views of siting process for electrical generation plants of over 350 kW elicited such a reaction.

Well, I know I am in the minority, but it does make some sense to me. I think Mclaren will be a top team next year and going forward, and I think Mercedes will have a German focus. If they were to catch Vettel, it would have been over for Button.
I don't think Jenson will match Hamilton, but if he does, he could be on a very good thing.

Not McLaren, then? :D If you get seated anywhere between the Merc pits and the McLaren pits, you should be fine. Seating in front of RBR should allow you to see both pits, right? :)
That is assuming that the MP4-25 doesn't already have a bias towards Lewis' style, building up on his 2009 feedback.
Come to think of it, when has it NOT been about tyres? 2009 became an intriguing battle partly because the Brawn was too gentle on its tyres. 2008 was decided because Lewis (on wets) passed Glock (on dries). And up to 2006, we had a tyre war.
Who was it that said that it'll usually be about tyres, because its the only contact the car has with the road...
It could do, but being so heavy for large parts of the race i dont think they will want it to slide anywhere near as much as recent models
2008 wasnt about tyres. Lewis was only behind glock because he hadn't pitted, it was a strategy gambit...

Yes, it was about strategy, but ultimately, it still related to those tyres. Other wet races like Spa, Silverstone, Monza, and Monaco factored this in too. And there were the dry races - like Turkey.
last year I was in Section L which was in front of Ferrari, this year am in Section K which is closer toward the podium. I can't recall how wide each section is though to work out if I am still in front of the first garage. Either way, I'll be able to see Nico (ugh)
Why do you think so? I actually think Kimi was the right man for the team, while not necessarily from a financial perspective, but rather from a competitive perspective. Similar talent (and driving style) would mean they would've probably pushed each other harder.

I'm hearing reports this morning that Brawn have gone back to basics and are going to announce Jacques Villeneuve and Ralf Schumacher this morning.

Perhaps competitively, but McLaren are moving from a manufacturer backed team in more of a williams direction, long term finance is the key. Fast drivers will come and go, they have the 2 which will make the most money, giving them a better car. and hey, they are both world champions.
Im not sure about kimi pushing lewis... i didnt see much of that at ferrari at the start of this year...
If we're talking about a marketing perspective, it's usually a no-no to put 2 drivers of the same nationality in the team - no point in covering the same ground twice.
Also, the ultimate key to long-term finance is continued success. And I was thinking there would be a better chance of that with Raikkonen alongside Hamilton rather than Button.
Anyhow, we shall see what happens from here on out.
I think there is a chance that Jenson simply felt that there was a strong chance that Brawn were a one trick pony and that next year will be a surprise. Also he's had some good experience of the madness of manufacturer run teams, the only time Brawn/Honda were successful was when they weren't owned. Perhaps he didn't want to go back to that?
As I mentioned yesterday, I think BOTH the Hamilton-Button and Alonso-Massa rivalries will fizzle out, with Hamilton and Alonso easily gaining the upper hand over their respective teammates. Raikkonen in a Brawn may become a spoiler (just as Hamilton was this year), but I don't see him having enough to win the title with Merc just yet - but it may be enough to get him a renewal alongside Vettel or Rosberg.
I would trust Ross Brawn to always provide me a good car. The only cars he saw from start to finish that flopped were in 1996 and 2005. I would've taken a team leadership role with Ross at my side rather than going to McLaren which, while strongly established, is pretty much Team Hamilton right now.

I think I shall continue to call them Brawn because calling them Mercedes always makes me stop and think slightly because so many people in the past have referred to McLaren as Mercedes
Sigh. This makes me long for F1 copying the NBA and doing retro liveries. Imagine the Merc in Brawn colors, the McLaren in Kiwi or Marlboro colors, the Williams in green, the Ferrari in proper scarlet red and black, Sauber in black, and the like. I really think it's an awesome idea and would give a lot more color to the sport.
The sponsors will probably block it, but if they work at it, it can work really well for them. They can even do special events to display the retro livery and everything.
And let's not forget Renault in yellow and black!

Are you sure you're not Martin Whitmarsh? :P That said, Merc said they won't meddle with what Ross wants to do. Could it partly be a case that Merc have more faith Ross Brawn will do well than Martin Whitmarsh, for example?

I don't think Ross would sell if he knew Merc would meddle. I'm guessing Merc won't meddle as long as Ross is around - Ross wouldn't take kindly to that kind of attitude from Mercedes. But if and when Ross leaves...
Norbert has got itchy feet to run a team. He has become the most famous engine provider. I remember the same thing happening when Thiessen kept popping up at Williams events. They keep going back to their management saying, "look this wouldn't happen if we ran the team".
Finally a bad season for McLaren and he was in.

I'd like to add why I don't use LCLT unless it's a 'live' session. I feel that with all the breakout threads, it's easier to stick with the doohickey to keep track of what's being said by everyone. Besides, I am forced to use Firefox 2 or IE6 during the day and it seems that the older browsers don't like preloading all the comments.
Just my thoughts - but then, the downside is that I am always posting in the wrong bloody thread, so...
Understood. We had some thoughts yesterday about trying to limit the threads the doohickey reads, which seems bizarre to me, so I thought I'd give the LCLT a bit of love.

The large use of threads makes it hard to know whether you want to comment or not. Personally I prefer to let most topics pass me by but I guess it's good to know what topics are under discussion at any one time. I'd use LCLT if there was some kind of "what topics are being discussed now" section showing what topics were currently active.

Probably, but I like to fill the right hand side of the window full of the comment box and I can't do that now because I don't like the LCLT to be bigger than the window it sits in, if that makes sense.
It matters more during live sessions when I quickly scroll up and down to catch up on comments.

You what? Normally I'd expand the comment box to fill its own column. You don't lose any of the scroll bar for the comments. There is a scroll bar for the window itself, I don't see what the problem is though.

Actually on the topic of flagging comments. I did have a thought the other day which was we've talked for a while about the idea of hearting a comment. I think we should be able to note a comment too (flag can be a bit negative a word). But I was thinking sort of say somebody broke the news that Kimi wasn't going to race next year... I might want to note it but I certainly wouldn't heart it.
I was thinking this might be another way that we can help to surface great on topic comments.
Oh I don't do that at all. I make it single column. So I have the comments on top of the comment box and then make the window only the width of the comment box.
I do that for live sessions too. LCLT on the left, videos in the middle (three) and Tweetdeck on the right with three columns.
It's tricky because we want LCLT to be as customisable as possible, which I guess leads to compromises.
But that is a good thing.
I don't want a slap :P But sometimes it would be helpful to have a couple more resizable boxes with nothing in them just to lower things by a changeable amount to fit what you're trying to arrange it around. Either that or allow you to change the height of the post box or factbyte factbox so I can use them for that.
All suggestions are considered without slapping :)

I know LCLT has lost out on development time to both the doohickey and the homepage, so perhaps I chose the wrong time to promote it :)
I am really hoping for the HTML 5 spec that google get their upload change through. The suggestion being that you should be able to drag and drop and hopefully paste into the upload box. For situations like this you could just screengrab and press paste. Would be great.
(of course my operating system could save the clipboard as a file...)
I did just think when I saw it that... while you say in the post that LCLT doesn't get the love it deserves it might be a good idea to clear out the film watch countdown... Although I don't know what you put in instead.
We did ask for suggestions, and it seemed that countdowns to the season were popular.
We want to avoid that though :)

To clarify: The Brawn-Button deal in the article mentions 8M basic pay, with up to 4M in bonuses. Which is just about consistent with what we've heard from other sources.
Also, Nick Fry did state in the Autosport article that they were offering Jenson an updated version of the 3-year deal they struck starting this year. Effectively, they were willing to give him an increased salary for 2 years. Right now, I'm guessing they will buy an engine-building unit or outsource it to an outside engine company like the one Brian Hart used to have in the 1990s (I don't think they can build one from scratch).
These engines can then be rebadged as McLarens.
Question is, who can do it? Is Ilmor interested to return to F1? Is the Brian Hart operation still alive?
After Kimi has said it is McLaren or nothing how can Mclaren now being considered. Have they no pride? Oh so Kimi has woken up to the possibility they could give him a race-winning car. I use a laptop without the aid of a mouse most of the time. I have a slidey pad for scrolling purposes. If I don't click into the comment's received box specifically before I try to scroll, the main page scrolls down rather than the comments. Also if you're scrolling the comments and you don't stop exactly as you get to the top, the main page moves and you need to readjust the main scroller.
It's not the end of the world. I do it a fair amount though. It'd be nice if it just filled the window and no more so the main page didn't have a scroll at all. I think that was Gavin's point. Then it wouldn't happen. With all the bumph at the bottom as it stands, you'd need to have the comment box about 3cm high for that at the moment.

I've got Rapidweaver for the Mac, but the templates that come with it aren't very flexible unless you're a CSS whizz, and the blog function doesn't have any comments so you have to make it work through a third party (which of course means that the third party in question may decide to pack it in or start charging). There is a plug-in that allows you to use Wordpress for blogs and comments but it seems a bit complicated. And there's one that uses Disqus, which looks quite impressive, but once again you never know when they're going to pack it in.
Not much point in having a blog without a comment function, is it?

At first I was angry that Kimi seem to say one thing and then say another. The interview above suggests Kimi is not considering the Brawn Mercedes seat.
Now having read Brawn's comments about Jenson leaving (more the how) I do genuinely feel for the team. I will even change my mind about them trying to get Kimi. It does seem that Kimi and his management have not done the sort of dirty dealing I thought was being orchestrated (after saying only McLaren well we will now consider Mercedes). The real problem is bad press reporting.

Someone has just told me that when Button took his pay cut at the start of the year there was a verbal agreement that he would have a share (10%) in Brawn GP but they haven't honoured that. Cue him going for a drive to Woking.

I find this a bit difficult to believe. Jenson isn't good enough for me to offer part ownership to keep him around.
I aleways feel bad when I make fun of legard but then I remember Singapore and how it was the first race I've ever fallen asleep in during the middle of the day thanks to his paint drying on the wall approach to commentating in a really bad race so... it evens out ;)
If there is substance to that yes - wow. I do not know what to think.

You should try to be less angry about reported speech. Sometimes people take these things too literally, as if the quotee's utterances are set in stone. At the end of the day they are just vibrations passing through air, and very often they contain outright lies, things that the quotee is merely saying to suit the moment, or things that they may change their mind about. Or a combination of those – I could draw you a Venn diagram.

I still think that if Red Bull is as good next year as this year Kimi could return there. Had to cut a load of words out of the transcript, and because the idea of budget capping seemed dead in the water I chopped that bit out. A couple of months later, there was this same fellow telling a certain WEBSITE that he thought budget capping was a great idea. How we laughed...

Now considering it was 10 Team principals and the scoring was 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 the scoring of all of the rest of the drivers put together could only muster 11 points (and that includes Jarno, Timo, Nick and Nico). So obviously these drivers own team principals did not think much of them either. No wonder Frank Williams seemed so unconcerned at losing Nico this time. What do they know we do not know!

My new favourite ever F1 writer is Edd Straw. In a certain MAGAZINE he wrote the following
The arrival of new teams next year has given the stagnant F1 driver pool a much-need stir, and one driver who deserves to benefit from that is Paul di Resta.
The 23-year-old Scot has spent three very successful seasons in the DTM and will hopefully get to drive a Brawn-Mercedes at Jerez. But even though he's one of the most talented drivers out there, that's no guarantee he will get the F1 racebreak that he deserves.
He has the potential to win grands prix, and maybe even world championships. Take a look at his CV. In 2006 he defeated team-mate Sebastian Vettel to succeed Lewis Hamilto as F3 Euro Series champion, and also has the 2004 McLaren AUTOSPORT BRDC Award under his belt. In the DTM, he rapidly made established names look average and came close to winning the '08 title. That adds up to a very fast driver who has experience of developing cars over a season.

Pedalo's being connected to FI too, and I think he might end up at USF1. Whatever, he has a good chance of getting a race seat somewhere next year (thanks to his Macca databank).
As for di Resta, I think it's more likely he ends up as Merc's 3rd driver than Macca's. Either way, he should get some sort of F1 drive next season (race or test-wise).

Wow - none of the Audis automatically clinched an entry. No doubt they'll get entries anyway, but that's probably not good news for their competitiveness next year.

I am not sure which side of the McLaren Mercedes divide he will end up on but AUTOSPORT have now said a couple of times that he will test forBrawn/Merc at Jerez but someone on here last night said he had a seat fitting at Force India. FIF1 have a partnership deal with McLaren and potentially have an empty seat.
I think Brawn would be better having di Resta than Heidfeld. At least there is a chance that di Resta may be something special. It would also put Rosberg under real pressure to beat the rookie and put him is him in his place so he would have to deliver.

Even if McLaren manage to have their own engines, I don't think they'd be willing to take customers just yet, if only because they'd want to refine it on their own first. So if they're courting FI to be their customer, it's probably way too early to be doing that.
Anyhow, we shall see how this develops...
I'm assuming that's what'll happen anyway.. it happens that way most years for one team or another, this year it's their turn.. I think Aston Martin declined GT1 last year and relied on being accepted in P1..

They also lost a lot of their tests due to rain.
I think they will want four cars running so they can sort the reliability as quickly as possible.

Must say I liked him on the CBBC commentary.He was in full Johnny Ball mode, explaining how F1 works with really good real-world science that kids can understand. For example, under the safety car he was explaining why getting heat into a tyre is so important, using the example of a pencil eraser on a table to demonstrate how rubber grips when it's warm and how you can get the heat in.

I think they count turns so that when someone is undoing it they know how many turns to get the nut off and it doesn't end up flying away. They have a torque setting on their PGTs

I was watching TV just after I shut down my computer last night when a great space rock story came on. The Earth every year passes through the tail of some comet or other - I can never remember its name. Anyway this gives rise to the Leonid meteor shower which is one of the regular spectacular meteor showers each year.
Normally the pieces are so small that they burn up high in the atmosphere and are seen as shooting stars which look nice. Last night over Utah there was a particularly large lump of space rock that briefly turned night to daylight. Literally.
The piece of rock that caused this was reported as being about the size of an oven. I will leave Christine to explain to Mr C what an oven is.

That is unknown. Last seen, D Richards was still bleating about being 'forced' to take Cossie engines. There wasn't really any 'forced' in it, from what I hear; basically, all applicants were told that they had to have a proper agreement for an engine supply. "Oh, we could have a Mercedes engine" just wouldn't cut it. Some people just inferred from that that they were being strongarmed.

Today's spacewalk has just finished and the astronauts are heading back in. I just founf out that the reason I had the wrong time for this spacewalk was because the astronauts were woken 4 and a half hours later today than yesterday. Seems odd but as someone whose bodyclock works on more than a 24 hour cycle I can see the appeal.
During any spacewalk mission control regularly asks the astronauts to check their gloves so that if their is any damage it can be deteced early to prevent a hole or tear causing all their air to leak out. Normally this is a reasonable request and the astronauts comply immediately. One just refused to do a glove chek on the very reasonable grounds that they had just agreed to head back in and checking the gloves now would make no difference as if they found a problem he would be told to head back in anyway.
After a delay mision control came back and said they agreed. I am sure they consulted someone or a manual before they realised how stupid their request was.

Too qualified - I have a degree (albeit in a different area - my degree is in information management and the apprenticeship is in administration and business).
Not qualified enough - due to a combination of doing my A-Levels a few too many months ago and a bizarre computerised test, I apparently only have Level 1 literacy skills (the apprenticeship requires Level 2). For non-English readers, Level 2 is GCSE equivalent and Level 3 is A-Level equivalent.
I have an A at GCSE English Language and my degree required a fair bit of literacy. None of the questions on the screen for literacy required much thought, let alone guesswork. Everyone agreed the result was not reflective of my actual ability, but the computer determines what happens, not the assessors.

You're downloading them into 720p, right? I just chuck mine into windows Movie maker and click the Youtube button and it does it for me whilst uploading it in HD. This is the Windows 7 MM though (which actually bloody works!), so I'm not sure how you could keep the quality on Vista or XP :/

I saw something in the mag about Penske saying that the IRL should focus more on American drivers and that would be the route to success. Penske is a guy I have always rated but that has to be the dumbest comment I ever heard. CART was international and a massive success. Tony George set up the IRL to be as American as apple pie and to highlight mega-talents like Billy Boat. It was such a success that even now it is more international he is still pumping money into it to keep it afloat.

I think the key is more *successful* American drivers to appeal to the home market. In CART they had Michael Andretti and Jimmy Vasser. Well you pay VAT on your call charges. I think they decided rather than adjust the price plans when the rate of VAT fell, it'd be easier to refund the difference upfront rather than drop each individual rate accordingly.

Utterly impossible. Once the nest is started birds can take twigs up and weave them in but they can't possibly start the process. Imagine you are a bird and you want to build a new nest on a branch. You take up the first twig and sit it on the branch and go get another. By the time you get back the firt one will have blown away. That's before you consider the down draught from their wings and the effect of their weight jumping on and off the branch.
It is totally impossible for a bird to start the nest building process.

You were assuming the experienced driver remembered how to drive. A reasonable assumption that didn't quite prove true in poor Luca's case.

In Rob's interview with AUTOSPORT he said he wasn't suprised Badoer was so slow. He also said that Badoer understands the car technically way better than Massa or Fisichella. Makes you wonder how slow he would be if he wasn't so much more technical.
