We are in the middle of the week now, and it is Gil de Ferran's birthday today. Part time racer, part time director, we're a fan of Ferran after meeting him at the Honda quiz a few years ago. Anyway, here are some of the more F1 related things we're talking about:

  • The team who are allowing Trulli into their NASCAR test say they are taking things very seriously, even if Jarno himself says it is just for fun. Apparently they like bringing drivers in from other series' to see how they got on and they want him to be as fast as possible. They do know it's Trulli, right?
  • Meanwhile, Trulli's teammate may not have much in the way of a drive at the moment, but he does have a fan. RG has written up the first of a three-part series on Glock's best drives of the year. I really like the idea of reviewing a drivers best performances, particularly when it's written with such passion.
  • There were a couple of conversations about how qualifying will turn out next year, and here are Jackie's thoughts on the subject. A great post which weighs up the pros and cons of the regulation changes for 2010.

A couple of things to finish: we also featured a great post from Chris about his weekend at Top Gear Live, and whilst that show returns to TV this weekend, we'll be watching Cars during the Sidepodfilmclub. That'll do it for now, I'll see you in the comments.

nope. but why would a certain venue cause issues? a decent mic will be fine - either hand held, or if the subject isn't moving a lapel would be better.

background noise always will be an issue unless you own a truck.

i guess i meant more background noise really, i may try my non-plug-it-in-the-wall-and-plug-it-all-together-mic with someone, the campus cafe/library are usually pretty noisy during teh day.

yeah, i think audio will be my main bit of the day. usually it takes me a good while to get round the whole place just when i'm looking at stuff, let alone actually engaging with the people on the stands. pictures are a maybe, i may try and get some shots of the banner-age and such, but apart from that, i may try and get some others, but i wont really need many. will borrow a camera and see what happens on the day!!

anyway, it's still 2 moths off, i get way too excited about things way to early! sleep for me. Motorsport Industry Skills in the morning. i have a feeling we'r doing flags and signals and such. funnnnnn. adios

    DUCK!!!

You may remember when sidepodspace was on sidepodradio there was a lot of talk about space rocks coming close to the Earth. I said the biggest problem with Bruce saving the planet is that we would not know the rock was coming. Well we have just had a rock get within 9000 miles of the planet which is nothing in astronomical terms and it was only spotted 15 hours before it scraped the atmosphere.

In your face Diggnation. Being afraid of space rocks is not irrational.

but Bruce was clearly in control, because he couldnt have taken that picture from the space rock!

He was OK this time but imagine we only got 15 hours warning and he was sidepodpubbing with Alex and Bassano. He would never be sober in time

not sure if anyone is still awake but have just released a minor update individual post pages. you can see an example here:

    http://sidepod...y-11th-november-2009/

    specifically, things of interest:

    - pages load faster than before (although aren't yet homepage-fast).

    - facebook sharing is now much improved. preview images load properly and audio shows can be shared using the cute 'blue' facebook mp3 player. try the share on facebook link on this page to see in action: http://www.sid...me-out-of-the-bottle/

    - we're experimenting with the ability to tweet individual comments. this may not work out given the 140 character limit, but please do try it and let us know what you think.

    - comments look more like they do in the real-time page. however, smilies are currently not working, you can't preview a comment and they won't appear automatically just yet. it's all on the list though.

    phew.

on paper, it seemed like a good way to highlight comments, especially if people aren't around for any reason. but was playing earlier and found the 140 character limit a bit of a pain.

That is an issue but it links straight back to the comment so with a bit of fiddling it could still work with long comments

not wanting to be picky on spelling or anything... but it's an interesting one. It's "bated" not "baited" breath.

"bated" here being like "abated" eg. "it's exciting so I am holding my breath", rather than "it's so exciting I've popped a worm in my mouth" ;)

Do you remember the F1 videos released every year at the end-of-year FIA gala?

For the past year, I've been hunting down the songs included in each of those montage videos (they started in 2000). As of now, I'm at 59 songs from 2000-2008, and I'm still missing 4 or 5.

I don't think the video here works anymore, but it should give you a good idea: 2007 Gala Coverage

The plot is supposed to look like this but it looks like this
It should be in logarithmic scale for y2 and double logarithmic scale for y1. It worked fine for the two others I did before but for this one I let matlab do the calculations (required beforehand) too and now the scales don't work anymore and the values are wrong. I could put the m-files on drop.io if that helps? #forkathi

    "Miscommunication"

When we asked him during the lecture if he was going to run through the assignment noone understands, he specifically said 'he would do the exercises that we can catch up with later' and I asked if we could go which he seemed to have no problem with. This morning he sent out emails to a group of us and course tutor with quite a rude tone saying we should have been there after we left to go through the assignment problems, which he said he did after we left but the reason we went was because of the fact he said he would't be going through it and we wanted to get on with it!!

It's really annoying because he says the exercises he mentioned meant the assignment; why didn't he just say the assignment then rather than misleading us... very annoying but settled now.

I am really intrigued that Williams went with the Cosworth considering not so long ago they were trashing it as an option. Perhaps they know something most of us do not know! The alternative is they are fed up with Manufacturers telling them what they can and cannot do - I am sure there was a fall out with Toyota and they want to return to dealing with an English contractor.

Something like this, same concept, same site, but better, would be nice.

Can I say, I wouldn't mind GMM? *waits to be chased outta here*, but really, rumours can be both really good or really bad. Heck, football uses the Sun, so why can't we let our own equivelent be used?

same argument as always. it's a waste of everybody's time discussing something that simply cannot happen.

yes it would be lovely if kimi went to STR and made them 2010 WCC champions with a budget of 11p, but that level of fantasy should be limited to a game of dungeons and dragons... shouldn't it?

anyone can make any old ***** up. it doesn't take intelligence, nor effort. am amazed the bbc can justify benson's pay packet for the zero amount of effort he's putting in with this trash.

    Errrr....

I think not.... I believe Jenson would run a mile rather than be with Lewis....

I think you have something against Kimi Rich...

First it's Macca should pick Nick Heidfeld.... and now Jenson....

Given Martin choosing his dream team as Kimi and Mika plus saying their feedback is excellent... it being relatively well known that Rubens was better at set up than Jenson... and the lack of cheering when Lewis suggested Jenson joining him at Macca on Sunday....

Plus... I will go into decline....

Yeah. I mean, it has potential (minus GMM) but

    a) Nowhere near enough to justify one a day.
    b) Copy and paste, copy and paste.

First it's Macca should pick Nick Heidfeld.... and now Jenson....

Absolutely, I would love Nick to get the Macca seat as he is my favourite driver and in a minority of about three who think he is the best driver on the grid (at least at overtaking - because he makes them look so effortless). I am realistic and recognise the chances are slim for Nick to have a seat at Macca if the World Champion is available. I rate Jenson very highly for essentially the same reason as Nick - they are uber-stylish and can overtake unlike Vettel or Webber. Jenson is holding firm on his contract despite Brawn beeing a week back 99% sure. This suggests he (Jenson) has an alternative if Brawn do not meet his terms. Now that Toyota is out which team could afford 6 million pounds? I think Brawn are simply not in a position to pay Jenson as there have been some issues (clashes) in sponsor interests and it will take time for their payout from broadcasting rights to come to them (cash flow). They also do have Nico who is reckoned to be good at car development.

Now we get back to Kimi, you may find this surprising, I was upset/perplexed he was kicked out of Ferrari (but there must be more reason than we know). I do believe what I have written, that Kimi under-performs - when averaged out over a few seasons Felipe has simply out-driven Kimi. I do not believe Felipe to be a more talented driver, simply a more committed driver who is prepared to work harder. I also believe Kimi has such a lavish life style that unless he sells his house in Finland he will explore other interests so as to maintain that life style. This tells me he is not that interested in F1 now and I think he should explore those "other interests". Would you not be excited to see Kimi as next Finnish World Rally Champion?

As far as Jenson would run a mile rather than be with Lewis - F1 drivers are supremely confident in their self-belief - he will see it as a challenge and the Macca will be a better car than the Brawn next year (that pains me to admit).

Please do not go into a decline.

Lots of stuff about Nick and Jense and Kimi...

To which I will say that whilst I respect your views on the two former guys... unsurprisingly I cannot agree about Kimi...

I specifically think that it will be sad for Kimi to end his career in F1 with a team that totally did not support his natural talents... whilst I have not always been complimentary about Macca I do believe that aside from dodgy Merc engines (now solved) they did do justice to the Kimsters innate abilities...

Ferrari did not seem to know what to do with him... although it was noticeably better in the Todt days and I think Ross would have helped too... in the early season in 2008 and 9 Kimi was strongest but the minute they had to develop the car it veered towards Felipe and understeer.... they just didn't know how to improve the car and keep any element of oversteer...

And I am very very tired of hearing how great Lewis was in the late season in a car that was being consistently updated for his specific requirements, whilst Kimi got nearly as many points whilst Ferrari was rubbish and not being improved....

So to finish on such an unhappy note with people not appreciating Kimi burns me more than I can say.... even though the unbelievably relaxed Kimi lets it all wash over him (a bit like being set on fire didn't raise his heartbeat)... probably why he is an F1 driver and I am not....

I am very very happy he go rallying but it should be after a year in which he is given a car he can drive as we all know he can drive.....

    You kindly finished with...

"Please do not go into a decline."

Many thanks for the generous thought Rich....

    But how can I not??.....

We have to go back to Joe's theory - when a driver has been announced to be leaving a team, his ducks have to be lined up. Moreso with Kimi, who already had a guaranteed 2010 drive with Ferrari, and let it go.

Mercedes are negotiating their way out of their McLaren contract to buy into Brawn. The buy out from McLaren could cost them $300 miilion. There is no way they are going to spend all that then lose the chance to have the number one on a silver car next season. Jenson will get more or less what he wants. The last thing Mercedes want is to spend a fortune to get out of their McLaren contract then let them have the number one on thier car when McLaren blocked Mercedes from cashing in on Brawn's success this year.

In addition they are going to spend another fortune buying most o the Brawn shares with an option to buy the rest. Since the team is going to be known as the works Merc team there is no way they are going to let Jenson depart with the number one plate when they will have spent the best part of half a billion to make sure he is in their team next season before they have paid him a peny.

Regardless of what anyone believes they can prove Jenson and Nico will be at Brawn next season and Lewis and Kimi will be at McLaren.

And for Lou there will be a British GP at Silvertone.

I think Macca is going to be the team to beat next year, and I think Jenson knows that. I would wish Jenson and Rubens to have stayed at Brawn.

I would like Nick at Macca. Actually one reason I would not like to see Kimi at Macca is I think it could go all wrong like Lewis and Fernando in 2007. Jenson and Nick are less likely to create the strife that Kimi could generate. I am afraid then that Kimi will get a raw deal. Fernando is about my least favourite driver but I think he did get a raw deal, despite many Macca staff having huge respect for him (I know that from ex staff worker at Woking).

Just one problem Kimi wants more income for less commitment and to have more freedom to explore other interests that Lewis. It will destroy the team. Kimi is setting himself up to actually retire (at least for next year). If Macca are stupid enough to accept his terms he will drive otherwise he walks away.

Not next year - Mercedes cannot get out of their contract - and actually I do not think they have such infinite resources. Tey will stick with McLaren next year and build up Brawn to be the Silver Arrows in 2011.

We could see a red-and-white McLaren (Vodafone colors + Marlboro heritage) and Brawn in silver and highlighter green.

For next year it will still be Vodafone Mercedes McLaren while Mercedes builds up its ties with Brawn. One problem Brawn run into was a conflict of interests between sponsors and one of them has pulled out. So they are being squeezed.

very minor changes (and slightly rushed, so things may go wonky) to realtime. clear your caches, or hard refresh:

    http://sidepodcast.com/realtime/

    changes as follows:

    - audio alerts now off by default
    - you may need to add you name and email again. apologies.
    - added integration for a couple of services, including youtube, twitpic, qik and flickr.

try this url for a quick example:

I agree on that - but eventually Mercedes will want to take control of all operations in the day. They were "peed" off that could not either sell their engine to Red Bull nor actually gain much marketing from Brawn this year.

Kimi does nothing to destroy the team... he has never done anything like that....

Indeed whatever happens... even when his own team-mate shunts him off (JPM) or Lewis does the same (Canada) or Heikki sets him on fire or Lewis comes out in front of him on a flying lap (Interlagos 2007) he doesn't make a fuss.... he never has....

He wants to be able to do an odd rally when it doesn't conflict and to avoid sponsors stuff when as a shy person (he's almost claustrophobic in company) he really hates it... that's hardly disruptive when the other guy is a bit of a media hound...

Kimi wants Macca to pay a sensible amount not taking the Ferrari pay-off into account... and why shouldn't he...

He's still asking for a lot less than Lewis and Alfonso are paid.... so where is the harm...

    Don't believe he's asking Macca for 25mill... he isn't....

So Nick wouldn't rock the boat because he'd be a second driver to Lewis...

Lewis throws his toys out if Kimi comes?.... then he should learn to grow up....

I don't think Kimi does want better terms than Lewis and I'm sure he'd take less if he can do the rallying and cut sponsors stuff...

But if Macca are trying to get him for 5mill per the latest reports that's too low regardless....

I agree with that, but not sure either are best for Mclaren.

I guess the question is, should Mclaren have two established stars, or should they get a promising younger driver (or should I say less experienced). If they want the WCC, I guess they need Kimi.

I am under no illusion that Nick would be number two - but at the moment he has no drive and little prospect other than Macca as I think most other seats are confirmed but not announced.

5 Million is still a hell of a lot of money - Jenson actually wants 6 Million and his team cannot give it to him and he is the World Champion.

Jenson is also under-rated - I do not care what people say he won the championship in a far more convincing way than either Kimi (one of Kimi's wins was gifted by his team mate and the other in an illegal car when he won the WDC) or Lewis (who won by one point and when another driver fell off the circuit). The Brawn was not even the best car on the grid - the Red Bull was.

I also can see both Jenson and Nick taking it to Lewis if they were given similar equipment and equal treatment (its a big IF).

When someone can produce a video showing more double overtaking manoeuvres that look effortless than in the link below I will acknowledge that driver to be better than Nick (and that includes Kimi, Lewis, Fernado and even Jenson)

McLaren is not a development team, they also have not won the constructors since 1998 - they need a points win machine behind Lewis - this means either a Kimi, a Jenson or a Nick (who incidentally over the last three seasons is the fifth highest scoring driver despite not having a win!)

You seem to forget that the FIA took a load of points off Lewis in 2008 and Lewis and Fernando in 2007. Otherwise things would have been cery different.

Brawn had the double diffuser so had a massive jump on all the teams normally at the front of the field. You have to judge drivers over the course of their careers and not just on championship points. By your system Heidfeld has been hopeless in comparison over all three years.

Nick wouldn't overtake so much if he qualified in the positions the others regularly do. The best overtaking performance you will ever see is Lewis in GP2 when everyone had equal cars and he spun down to about 20th and finished second. The only reason he didn't win was because Glock put up a decent fight before Lewis got past him.

McLaren had him as a junior and let him go. They could have had him when he was Kimi's team mate and they chose Kimi. There is not the clightest chance they are going to take him now that he is nearer the end of his career than the begining.

They have had Kovy for two years and he certainly is not as good as Nick. My challenge is provide the evidence that these other drivers can do the overtaking than Nick does in the video I have linked to. Until you provide a measurable evidence in terms of video review you only have opinions.

So he (Vettel) can only win if he has the fastest car. Your logic means it is simply the fastest car and driver does not count. I seem to remember another German that was fast but could not really overtake.

I am going to bed. It has nothing to do with how good a driver really is - it is just how much they are promoted and pushed by the media business.

I've give you a big example.

Recently i interviewed a Formula Renault driver...

he finished 3rd in this years championship and he finished 82 points behind the 1st place guy...

They are fairer to an extent but only if the driver has a conventional driveing style. Look at the top guys in F1 and Lewis and Kimi have extreme oversteer styles and Alonso,Massa and Kubica who is hyped as being up there all have extreme understeer styles.

Odds are none of them would be allowed to have an F2 car to their liking

This wiki seems to have ideas above its station - which is possibly why it hadn't been updated for several months prior to using it to rehouse the blog. There was certainly information on it 10 days ago when I last edited the page, and the wiki is claiming that no further edits have been done to that page by anyone since.

Yet it's not showing any text for me either unless I go through the "Recent Changes" section, which is a ridiculous way to navigate through a blog! So I'm going to attempt to link again, and hope this link works...

You can prove anything you like with points. You were only looking at the seasons drivers won their championship and extrapolating from there to assess their ability. You have to look at a whole range of factors over the longer term.

For example people said that Alonso did all the development on the McLaren and Lewis just jumped in and drove. This season the McLaren improved by almost 3 seconds a lap from the first race to the last so either Leis or Heikki is a great development driver.

I will change my opinion when people can put as much video material showing better overtaking.

yeah of course, but thats going to give you enough to be able to change the setup enough to considerably change how the car behaves. its not going to be as much as others, but they're not going to limit teh amount of changes that can be done to stop a certain type of driver winning

    The narrative includes...

"Alonso driving extremely well", "here comes Alonso Coulthard has lost momentum" "Coulthard in a very uncomfortable place here, gets squeezed out here by Heidfeld" "they (Coulthard and Alonso) are side by side, great racing at Sepang by two very experienced drivers" "he (Coulthard) still has plenty of braveheart"

During the replay of Heidfeld's overtake they said "luckily the gap opened up perfectly for him to give him the sweet spot to turn 15".

I guess it was also Heidfeld's "luck" that he posted the fastest lap of that race.

Firstly, thats a bad example so you have to take DC out of the equation he said in no uncertain terms that he was having bad understeer.

Heidfeld used the slip stream, it was a clever move but it's not the best i've ever seen. We're not saying he's rubbish, and all (half decent) f1 drivers have good overtakes in them sometimes, and we're not disagreeing that he's a good driver, we just dont think hes the best

Try and find a Webber or Vettel overtake on Youtube! Actually Button could not take Webber in the last race even though Webber's brakes were finished. Alonso could not past Heidfeld at Silverstone when Heidfeld's team was saying the car was so damaged that he should pit. In 2008 Heidfeldf made more on track overtakes than any other driver. It is my opinion - like Steven saying Lewis is the best driver. Nick is not driving the best car, he has almost always scored more than his team mate (which have included Kimi, Felipe and Mark). The two driver who have done better were Robert in 2008 (but taken over three years Nick has140 points compared to Robert's 101) and Frensen.

i don't need a Jenson autograph... i already have 2 (and i'm not an autograph hunter by any stretch of the imagination - both times have been a complete surprise)

awesome. for the first time last year i went into "the paddock" of the live action arena....

    it was rubbish

i'm mainly thinking about money here and i'll probably not go... i'd rather go to goodwood, i'm not sure my parents will fund my trip to goodwood as they are funding my trip to Spa... so i'm saving for tickets and probably accommodation and petrol (cause i will hopefully be able to drive myself down there by then)

you need a paddock pass thing to get a jenson autograph dont you?

You can grab him while he is walking around or ask Stuart if he is interviewing on the F1 Racing stand and see if he will let you hijack Jenson

2009 - 2 points difference in Heidfelds favour
2008 - 15 points difference in Kubicas favour
2007 - 22 points difference in Heidfelds favour
2006 dosent count as Kubica didnt do a full season...

However, 2007 was Kubicas first season.

So i dont really get your point about the points

agreed, but the modern phone has to be as reliable as my current one.

Also, check on the day if Jenson is going to do a talk at the Autosport stand. In the likely case that he is, get there really early and make sure you're standing at the front. Then you can get an autograph after Jenson's been interviewed, should you decide that you want one.

I find I need the Paddock Pass, if only because I get lost whenever I try to get into the Live Action Arena by the normal route and the paddock offers a handy short cut.

(Plus I like meeting drivers as well and the pass allows more of them to be met...)
