It is Jacques Villeneuve Sr's birthday today - brother to Gilles and uncle of the baggy-overalled Jacques we know and love. Eh-hem. He was also a race driver too, and took part in a couple of years worth of F1. What a family! Meanwhile, here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • The Race of Champions Nations Cup happened and whilst we live commented it, we also did not enjoy it. Read more about Mr C's disappointment, and why he probably won't be watching today. We'll set up a thread anyway, because it would be wrong to cover half an event.
  • Meanwhile, I spent the evening putting together the last F1 Digest race review, and it's quite a short one. On the same subject, Rich wrote a blog entry about his thoughts on the race from the build up to the aftermath - an interesting read.
  • Also, a few days late, but I only just remembered, the Sofa F1 pole poll was decided, and Mr C came second. He was doing so well! I am firmly mid-pack, with Pat just two points above me. Well done to everyone who took part, and even more next year please.

That's all for now. As mentioned above, there'll be some more live commenting in the form of the Race of Champions individual event, although it is on in work hours. Boo. Nevertheless, I'll see you in the comments.

There are people who believe Uncle Jacques was more talented than Gilles which boggles the mind. Shame he was never given a break.

He was never given a decent car like so many drivers. He entered only 3 races and did not qualify for any of them.

that would be stretching it a bit, but he's easily the most fiesty racer I've seen in a while. even more so than Sato.

Kobayashi could also end up at Lotus.

We won't know if someone doesn't get him. And he beat Trulli in his 2nd GP. It looks like Trulli will get a seat; it would be a darn shame if Kobayashi didn't.

but no rookie has come into F1 and had that kind of racing in their first races, since hamilton

just because it's happened before doesn't mean we shouldn't let it happen again. i'd rather see kobayashi than pedro de la rosa, for example.

There is not a straight correlation between junior records and F1 records but generally the more successful in one are successful in the other. There are some drivers like Jan Magnussen who don't deliver in F1 and there are others like Mansell who are much better in F1 than their record suggested they would be.

In two seasons of GP2 Kobayashi had two podium finishes including one win. That does not suggest an outstanding driver.

I'm not saying he's the next Schumacher in terms of results, but he's one to watch out for. For sure.

A lot of drivers look much better in their first couple of races than they turn out to be. I have seen nothing to suggest Kobayashi is anything special.

In two races of F1 I've seen Kobayashi overtake more people than I ever saw Trulli pass this season - defending from this year's WC at Interlagos and passing him at Abu Dhabi, finishing in the top 9 and beating Trulli in both races. That suggests to me he has potential and he can become better.

Exactly. We're not saying he's amazing, but that he's got the potential to be a good F1 driver.

The original comments from both of you suggested it would be some kind of tragedy if he didn't get a drive because he was something special. I would agree that he has the potential to be a decent F1 driver but so do many many others.

We're not disagreeing. We just think he should be given a chance because in his first 2 races he's shown that he might have something, we may be wrong but it would be a shame to not find out.

after what i saw the last 2 races, it would be a tragedy if a pedro de la rosa or a romain grosjean gets a seat and he doesn't.

I want more drivers who can challenge at the front of the field spectacular or not. The GP2 field over the past two seasons has generally been regarded as pretty poor. Kobayashi has finished 16th in the championship two years in a row which suggests not only is he nothing special but that he didn't learn a lot in his first season which he could use to move forward in his second.

I don't think finishing 16th two years in a row suggests he can be a good F1 driver.

I'm not looking at his GP2 stats - I'm looking at his F1 stats - and they're been darn good so far, considering the car he's in and his level of experience (as well as the lack of testing this season, and how those in a similar position to him of entering a car midseason have fared).

no idea - it shouldn't be cheap, but relative to how much Toyota have spent on this project, it probably will be.

that said, Toyota should sell their chassis IP to one of the new teams - someone might put it to good use. their base chassis tends to be good, it's the subsequent development that turns out to be an issue.

I think the manufacturer is tied down and not the team. i.e when Honda pulled out, they lost their entry into 2009, but the Fia 'were nice' and let Brawn have it for free.

As they're the 14th team as mandated by the FIA, they don't need to buy it - it'll be given to them for free.

That's how I see it anyway.

Only after all the other teams agreed. But I think this is a different case.

So bye-bye FOTA vice-chairman Howett. Is LDM's term ending soon? I can see a Martin and Mario combo taking over.

Depends on what needs to happen for Sauber now. From what I understand though, they get in for free.

Joe also said that based on his understanding, the team will not be sold, just shut down. As the F1 facility is part of a bigger Toyota compound, it'll be hard to sell off.

I can do, but the problem woudl be that i want to keep the URL as .tk not .wordpress.com, and so i would be redirecting the .tk address to .tk, so it would keep doing it until it reached the proper site. Which may work actually.

Depends on DNS. You might be seeing DNS propagation issues, which should clear up with time.

Pascal Vasselon intrigues me. Will he stay as a team engineer, or go back to his first line of work - tyres? Whoever the FIA get as the tyre supplier, they'll need someone with great expertise to speed up progress.

Toyota are apparently calling a press conference saying they will leave F1. I must admit, I'm kinda glad because they were just another waste of time big manufacturer.

I have decided that teams should be mostly privateer and car manufacturers should be mostly engine suppliers!

It's in Cologne. There is a research facility in Japan, and part of the problem for the team has been the need to be seen to involve the people there, even though they know very little about F1. Toyota only started winning in CART/IRL when the US arm took engine development in-house.

Cologne is quite far west, not far from the border with Belgium.

The company in charge of drilling the well are the ones responsible as they should have planned better for it - and they should have had better procedures to stop the fire too.

I really liked this article from Matt Mullenweg (founder of Wordpress). He talks about how he blogs and why he blogs:

I used to think constantly about building an audience for my blog. But now my attitude is, If I'm not blogging for myself, it's not worth it. So I don't post once a day, only when it feels natural. Some people complain -- they say, "Write more about WordPress; we don't want to see photos of kids in Vietnam," but I don't really care. I really like posting photos of places I've been.

I began with the assumption that if i walk down any non major road though downtown and stick to it for enough time I will deffinatly either pass, or see on another street 3 drifferent businesses.

Groceries, Dry cleaners, and barbers shops.

Before i got to the barbers i passed 4 groceries and 2 dry cleaners before reaching the barbers. No Queues, in sit, then a haircut...

I doubt it. He only had two races and none really know how good or bad the Toyota was. I think it was a better car just the drivers did not make full use. We will see next year as both Jarno and Timo compete with different team mates.

Assuming Macca do not take up Nick he will be at Qadbak and I rather hope Kovy will join him. I am convinced Jarno will be at Lotus (he said he had a firm offer).

Could depend on how far the negotiations are - somewhere I heard that Timo was on their list. I think you could expect to pay Timo rather less.

It is fairly obvious from Williams choice that they were limited by budget - it could be a good pairing though.

More or less sure Timo is going to Renault. Unless Sauber are putting in an extra late bid in.

No offence to myself, but I'd rather go for Renault.

I think that is quite possible and to be honest it is an interesting pairing. I think Robert could comfortable beat Timo if you go by reputation. Our problem is no-one really knows how good or bad the Toyotas were. The cars could possibly have flattered all of their drivers - Kobayashi's performance would suggest this.

It's supposed to position you in the family I guess. So Miss means "I am the daughter of Mr Blatchford". Mrs means, "I am the wife of Mr C(this is somewhat circular)".

I chased it off but the damage has been done.

We are getting back to proper F1. Instead of useless manufacturers like Toyota blowing billions with no chance of ever achieving anything we will have a grid of mainly Cosworth powered cars with no pointless refuelling.

A tyre supplier will turn up. They always do. If none of the big tyre companies my bet would be that Kumho would love to do F1 and I read somewhere that Bernie has a stake in Avon.

I wonder about the logic. I mean for Ferrari being beaten by Renault must be much worse in PR terms than being beaten by McLaren. When people know the cars they kind of equate them to the teams.

I'm not saying Ferrari are right or wrong with what they say, just thinking about the wider point for Ferrari.

Obviously in theory Ferrari only sell cars so that they can afford to go racing.

Quick thought here for a second.

CVC must be shaking in their boots right now with all this news.

It might be likely that if things like this continue its current course and F1 will have to continue to give out discounts to survive, they will not be able make their return on investment. Think of it this way: Bridgestone paid FOM a lot to apart of the sport and Bernie has started giving out discounts to races like Germany to get them on the calendar. Even with the short term gains of Toyota and possibly Renault leaving with big payouts, CVC might not be able to keep the payment schedule that it promised its' investors or the institutions that it loaned the money from.

That means either Bernie is going to get sacked by CVC as the fall guy and use it as a opportunity to try sell off FOM or they will try to force Bernie to try to buy back F1 to cut their losses.

That the writing on the wall I am starting to see with all this happening.

Remember when, years ago, the drivers went on strike? A reporter asked Bernie if he was worried. He said, "no there are twenty other people who'd do anything to take their place and all this lot know it".

I think earlier last year the teams thought they could collectively bargain against Bernie and founded FOTA to do that. They thought that they had Bernie over a barrel. But no there were plenty more teams willing to take their place.

This time it wasn't so obvious that there were teams ready. So they put them in place first.

but the racing was still rubbish compared to brazil, right? just the seats were a bit nicer.

Compared to Brazil ...yes... but that is the most unfair comparison as Brazil is probably nearly always one of the best if not THE best of the season...

But Brazil has it all as the crowd are amazing... probably they are madder than at Monza... and the track always gives incidents but at West grandstand there were quite a lot of incidents even if they didn't come to much...

At Valencia the only incidents happen in the pit lane but look back at the season and look at races where there was more excitement....

Actually we were all watching the whole Vettel Lewis thing that dominated the first part and the Button Webber thing the final bit... but there was a lot of other action...

Would the one stoppers prevail?.. there was Kazu... and a lot of great fights going on down the back... I'll bet you just didn't see them...

At the track they had the best big screens ever... as well as the stuff right in front of you...

    Hmmm...

Seats were OK but it was hardly that... and most were shaded from the sun although that's not true of a certain amount of the main grandstand... due to the sun's position...

The staff were amazing... so helpful and accomodating at every turn... nothing was too much trouble and they were unfailingly courteous...

His manager clearly knows nothing about driving. McLaren make oversteering cars and he is going to put an understeering driver in it against Lewis? McLaren managed to make the car suit Lewis and Fernando in 2007 but there is no way they can do that again.

No but they can say that Toyota can't sell their stake to another team. They want that stake to revert back to the FIA and Toyota to pay a break clause and to then be able to sell the place to Quadbike.

They don't want Toyota to sell their position to Quadbike directly.

Yeah. Don't worry. The FIA are trying to stop say Toyota selling their stake to somebody else.

It is actually almost impossible for them to do that. They can only really sell to somebody like Sauber and scrap the team. You can't really "buy" Toyota F1 because a load of their offices are in the Toyota car buildings etc.

The point is that the guy gets away with it even though everyone thinks he's been killed as well (but he hasn't).

I assumed that the point was that Ferrari are saying, by putting Todt in to the frame and retiring everyone assumes that Max finally got pushed out, but actually of course he got exactly everything he wanted. He got to retire, but keep his vision going.

I think Ferrari thought, "lets push Max out and we'll get what we want" but they pushed Max out, gave consessions to get him to leave, and now Todt is holding them to those concessions.

Positive news then? They wouldn't be asking for more money if they were quitting, surely?

Or bad news if they are asking for more money and more likely for the big bosses to refuse.

More of bad news for me - but I figure Bob Bell is a sensible chap and would have a Plan B ready if the board says no. He knows he can push, but not too hard.

It really is. Your chat with Seb worked really well, and sounded great too. I guess it is a lot easier to talk with someone.

the whole path to F1 is really interesting, and you don't often get insight into how the drivers are struggling to get there.

the test will come with more interviews trying not to ask the same questions

I'm not sure if anyone would answer this question, but it would be interesting to hear how these guys fund their racing careers. They talk about how much it costs to run a car for a year, but how can they do it? I know Mark Webber got money from Yellow Pages in Australia to start him out. I think James Courtney ran out of money. How do these guys get 100000 Euro?!

Blog post down for Brazil notes. Tomorrow I'll do a short Preview post (I think only NASCAR but haven't checked), then Abu Dhabi some time later but I'm not about this weekend.
