On this day, six years ago, the US government confirmed the existence of Area 51. I know this isn't even remotely F1 related, but I do find the relation between potential extraterrestrial life and certain paddock regulars an interesting concept. Anyway, here are some of the things we've been up to:
- The final F1 Digest for the German GP weekend is finished and ready for listening, and it rounds out the weekend nicely. One thing I have noticed following the race is Horner's comments about Webber. Whilst saying he did a great job, he also mentions how annoyed they were that the Australian didn't mention his injured shoulder over the winter, and that Newey isn't happy about the extra weight in a leg full of metal. Full of sympathy that team, aren't they?
- There are lots of fun things going on in the wiki following the Parade Lap this weekend. We've got Giggles Made-Up Media, otherwise known as GMM, plus Sidepodbond Film Titles and Sidepodale. All of these are pretty explanatory, I reckon, so head on over to the wiki and add your thoughts.
- In a slightly less fun, but just as important and interesting wiki addition, we've put up a page for anyone wishing to sign up to help with show transcripts to sign up. All the information you need is on the page, with an example of a completed show as well. We've had two volunteers already - RG and James - so join these excellent peeps and get writing.
That should keep you busy for a while, I guess. Mr C is busy planning a trip to Oviedo in Spain so he can see Mr Alonso in action. I am not so keen. Anyway, I will see you in the comments.

Ooh! Extra terrestrial stuff. I find all that kinda fascinating and totally not because of a certain band seem to implement all sorts of conpiracy theories into their music. Nope sireee.

It's amazing the things that find their way on to the daily post. I didn't know they admitted Area 51 exists even though it has been obvious for many years that it does.

I didn't even realise the All star game was this soon. They only finished voting last week
I thought i caught the end of it the other night from Seattle, must have been a warm up or an old one.

I think F1 should have some sort of All star event.
Probably at the end of the season so it would be more like the pro bowl.
It would give them a big televised event to present the world championship trophy's.
Was that not part of it then?
It used to be great when the top drivers went to the Bercy karting event. IROC was orignally set up to get the best drivers form al over the world together but that just turned into a NASCAR benefit.
Procar was good as well in the late 70s when on the Sunday morning of a GP a grid full of BMW M1s raced and the 5 fastest qualifiers from the GP raced against the regulars.
I would love to see an end of season event with the top F1 drivers, top sportscar drivers and IRL, NASCAR etc in equal cars or karts.
Isn't that the idea behind the race of champions?

I like the idea of some drivers who are not in F1 competing - those that could not make it for one reason or other. The problem is you never seem to get the right drivers to these events.

He will make the same statement again in another few weeks like he has done before.
The reason he said 48 hours is because he will meet with the FIA and FOTA just before the end of that 48 hours. Either they sign the Concorde Agreement, or CVC-FOTA split.
Dont CVC-Fota have a separate deal.. Wont the split be with the FIA?
I said CVC-FOTA because they've more or less made an alliance already. They will indeed split from the FIA.
And even then, a split would be temporary. If Ari is voted in, I'm pretty certain CVC-FOTA will manage to agree terms with Ari.

Nope, I actually think it's unlikely. But in case FOTA does split, CVC will at least have them covered. CVC can either have a hand in both championships, or leave F1 for GP1 altogether.
At least F1/GP1 has stability now. We know there will be a championship next year, and most of the circuits it will go to.
The FIA isnt really an issiue anymore as if they are obstructive everyone can leave.
I still wonder if Manor will become an issue though, the teams seem to be quite unhappy about that.
Also interesting that Force India and Williams still dont have a full seat at the FOTA table.
If GP1 happens, I'm pretty certain FI and Williams will go with them. Their money didn't come from Max; it came from Bernie.
Good point on Manor. I think they'd stay with F1 if a split happens.
Im still not sure FOTA will let them be there next year with or without a split.

FOTA are saying nothing at the moment. As Martin Whitmarsh said, why should they say anything? They don't have a vote. ;) Pretty convenient excuse, actually. :D
That said, I think they'll let the courts decide that matter. Would be interesting to find out if they're doing anything about it privately, though (which, even then, I doubt).
But hey, swapping Manor out for N-Tech is unbelievably convenient, no?

this isn't the first year that the Alonso one has been around, and thats what bothers me so much. Plus the fact that both Ferrari drivers are still contracted and it'd be super expensive to get rid of them. I just don't see it happening in 2010.
Yes! The point was that we are much more mates than anything else. So he didn't mind.
But Kimi's Ferrari rumors also came out in 01. I still suspect that either Kimi and FIAT will mutually agree to tear up the contract, or Kimi will get paid the same money to go rallying. Probably the former rather than the latter.

I feel people have had the 'Alonso is going to Ferrari/no he isn't debate in these comments at least 10 times in the last few weeks. This is why I hate silly season. Same thing over and over and over again.
It's very difficult as it's different to Danish and there's no Swedes in the Office today, but it basically says that Kimi Raikkonen will stop F1 after the last race and start a rally career. His replacement will be Alonso.
Kimi's friends say that he has no desire for F1 anymore - he wants to rally. There's some stats and then it says that Gazzetto wrote a story that Alonso has signed a 5 yeat contract with Ferrari and it will be announced at Monza.
If Ferrari could afford Schumacher when FIAT was struggling, the latter shouldn't be too difficult (albeit unlikely, indeed).

for so many years of my youth I thought it was 'dirt by sea' and I thought that was a very, very strange thing to put in your anthem.
We are a strange group of people. A while ago, very groups have led (small) campaigns to get the word "girt" back into modern use. They fail every time. We could rebrand it as the Webber campaign and maybe it will work.
Gazzetto della sport ran a feature yesterday about previous australian F1 winners. I was very proud :)

I just re-read the review of 2008 Australian GP on grandprix.com where Le Seb on his debut found himself in 4th place with 3 laps to go before his car broke down. this is what (probably) Joe Saward said in his review:

Yup, transcribe it however best it makes sense. The idea is to be able to search inside a show, so it's key words and thoughts that are important, rather than down to the very finest hum's and ha's.

very well. Considering i came out of original exam knowing it'd all gone wrong, I come out of this one with everything I had to do working, minus a not found message for when you make the program search for entries with no results. The examiner said that part wouldn't add to the grade (which I find brilliant stupid) so I just left what I had, which all worked as specified, which should be a delightful pass :D

for me, it tells me that a machine has not gone to sleep, whilst not damaging the monitor. going black is fine unless you really need to know that black isn't off. which is the case with our live streaming laptop.

the reason i own a mac is because i was laughed out of a studio for owning a pc many years ago.
the professional music industry as a whole shuns the very idea of windows, partly because microsoft have always supplied awful audio drivers and partly because it's an industry full of snobs.
before macs they all used atari's, never windows. even when apple was a dying company and nobody used macs, the professional print and music industries stuck by them.
muse absolutely use macs. even if they didn't they'd have to lie about it anyhow.

Hehe I get the impression from your comments on Alonso that your not a fan :P He did well at Germany though set the fastest lap which was 6 tenths faster than Mark Webber's fastest lap.
You have to remember the other teams are developing at the same time as Renault so the upgrades have to be like Ferrari's at Spain or McLaren's in Germany to make a real impact.
I think he is a far better driver than people give him credit for. Without flav it wouldn't surprise me if he wins races.

Was it not 6 tenths? I don't remember but McLaren's form improved in 2007 compared to 2006 and I know that wasn't all Alonso but he would have helped.

McLaren's improvement in 2007 was predicted before Alonso was announced. McLaren were competitive in 2005 when tyres had to last a whole race and the 2007 tyres were similar to the 2005 tyres although pit stops were allowed. McLaren knew how to design a car to heat up hard tyres.

Piquet knows that, he's said so himself several times it motivates him but whilst Fernando gets the new parts and makes them work Piquet's performances don't seem to improve.

The conditions weren't great though, and its one slip considering some of Piquet's performances in the rain.
did you hear what ted had to say about piquet and kazuki last friday? he said every team try to rate the drivers in the field, and as far as her could tell, nobody rated either of those two.
he didn't specifically say it, but the inference appeared to be... including they're own teams.
bourdais was rated above both and now appears out of a drive. piquet is nothing but a waste of space, and there is no evidence to suggest otherwise to anyone.
Alonso would be favoured in any team over Piquet i think, even if it's just because Alonso doesn't go about crashing and spinning as often as Piquet does...
i know i know, my point is just that he isnt as bad as he's made out to be. if he were given a good car, engineer, a chance....he'd do better

The same can be said of any driver. Last season Alonso won two races and scored 38 points in the last five races of the season. Piquet didn't make the podium at any point other than his podium in Germany and scored 6 points in the last 5 races.
True enough. Maybe if he gets a better car we'll see but thinking back he does sem inconsistent, you think of performances like spa last year where he was absolutrly excellent if it weren't for that rain but then you get a lot of races where he was quite simply invisible. Whether this is a case of him or the car can be discussed but I'd like to see him at renault instead of piquet.

Seems to be at the moment. She's got the Tamiflu and probably every disinfectant-related product you can think of.
OK, that's kind of an exaggeration, but she's taken all the necessary steps including wearing disposable hygiene gloves. I am also keeping myself topped up with a lot of fluids to try and help keep myself in good shape. I feel perfectly fine at the moment. Mind you, I drink no end of orange juice so the Vitamin C must be doing something right!

I say this in the sense that by Monza (the last GP2 race) she came across as newbie presenter who knew a little bit about GP2. This is the foundation she should have begun the year with, not ended it. I was willing to give her a chance this season and write it off advancing up the ranks too quickly (like drivers, presenters need to start at the bottom..), but then the coverage moved.
I don't think that was the reason.
Possibly has learned from GP2 to be fairly decent on the speedway.
She is, at least, better than the other paddock reporter on Sky Sports.
I felt the same about Crofty on that coverage too btw. Early on he was useless. Much better toward the end. Still insisted on referring to each team car as if they'd built the car though.

They were like that, yes, but that's not the reason they were there. She was stood in the pitlane with a live TV camera, not many of the other coverage providers did that - you didn't see a media swarm as you do elsewhere.

I haven't seen this year yet but I will. The drivers are not of the standard they were in the Rosberg or Hamilton years. They do make silly mistakes for that level and I'm going to enjoy Haven/Rees double-act again, they really do lay into the stupid errors - both from drivers and officials. Did you see 2007?

i don't recommend anyone try this, but macs truly rule.

i love old fashioned polaroid cameras. we have one somewhere but it doesn't work anymore :( to be fair i'm not sure i could fit another camera in my camera cupboard, i've made sure i have a fish eye lens shaped hole though for next time i go on a camera accessory spending spree, i may need to save up for a nice polaroid camera at one point.
