Live: Germany - Qualifying

Published

By Christine Blachford

Here we go, then, the best part of the weekend, if you ask us here at Sidepodcast Towers. All the action from qualifying, plus the only time you can speculate on strategy before it is laid out before you.

Weather Update

Nice and dry out there so far, if a little cool. The thermo-cam showed how cool the mechanics in the pitlane are compared to their normal heat status. The clouds continue to be ominous, though.

One to Watch

I am going to have to say Lewis Hamilton again. He's got the new parts on board, at the expense of Kovalainen (sorry Amy!), and he's topped two of the practice sessions so far. What can he do in qualifying?

Predictions Please

Who will get the all-important pole position? Will we see any big names drop out early? Will BMW be able to do anything? How far can Force India get?

2 brawns, a Red Bull and Lewis in the top 4.

    I like to be specific.

ahh but previously they have had him on the front row. How accurate are they normally?

I thought links are ok ... it's the passwords or something?

Never mind, I fished around for one and found something. Maybe we should just use the wiki PM system or something?

Bit of 'Ring trivia - there's a corner on the old Nordschleife called Eiskurve, which translates as Ice Curve. This is because apparently, when it rains, that corner is always the last one to dry out, making it quite treacherous. It's also quite a steep, off-camber corner too, which doesn't help.

Silly to put this comment in the middle of all the qualifying talk but...

Which is why on a day like today, or all of last year, Rubens has beaten Jenson.

Speculation who is heavier? I reckon PK is heavy and Vettel fairly heavy. Mark and the two Brawns among the lightest. Kovy lighter than Lewis and Sutil possibly the lightest of all. The two Ferraris will be similarly fueled to the Maccas and heavier fueled than the Brawns. It makes sense to fuel the KERS cars a little heavier and hope they make a good start to hold position and gain by a longer first stint.

Here are how the comparitor's predictions matched reality:

Sebastian Vettel 1 (3 places too high)
Lewis Hamilton 2 (3 places too high)
    Jenson Button 3 (Correct)
    Jarno Trulli 4 (Well wrong)
    Mark Webber 5 (
    Pretty pessimistic)
Felipe Massa 6 (3 places too high)
Kimi Räikkönen 7 (1 place too high)
    Rubens Barrichello 8 (Miles off)
Timo Glock 9 (Where was he?)
Fernando Alonso 10 (2 places too high)
Nico Rosberg 11 (Quite a bit too high)
Nick Heidfeld 12 (1 place too low)
    Kazuki Nakajima 13 (Correct)
    Giancarlo Fisichella 14 (Rather optimistic)
Sebastien Buemi 15 (2 places too high)
    Robert Kubica 16 (Correct)
Sebastien Bourdais 17 (3 places too high)
Nelsinho Piquet 18 (Counfounded the comparitor nicely)
Heikki Kovalainen 19 (The less said the better - at least as regards my prediction)
Adrian Sutil 20 (I am really happy this one was wrong!)

    Correct: 3 (15%)
    A bit wrong: 8 (40%)
    A lot wrong: 9 (45%)

In other words, the comparitor was slightly worse than the most pessimistic calculations I put out for it, which is probably about right for a bunch of 1s and 0s.

Gave a few good laughs though...

    Liuzzi hinting at a Force India seat. {Comment #131}

There have been rumours that Liuzzi has a contractual clause giving him a 2010 race seat, but I haven't given them much credence. In theory, he could be replacing either Sutil or Fisichella, since neither has a solid contract for 2010 (though the team has an option on Sutil, they haven't exercised it yet and the way they were talking the clause was dependent on performance before Germany).
