Live: Germany - Free Practice 3
Published
An amazingly interesting Friday, compared to what Free Practice usually offers up, leads into the best day of the weekend - qualifying day.
Weather Update
Clubforce tweets that the: "Weather much better this morning, warmer and sunny. Chance of rain later." Sounds par for the course at the Nurburgring.
One to Watch
Following yesterday's exploits, there are so many! I want to put Force India again, but I am going to go with Rosberg. Williams confirmed that they aren't doing low-fuel runs anymore, so where will he legitimately end up?
Predictions Please
Will Free Practice have any resemblance to qualifying? Will there be any crashes? Will the weather hold out? Can any Germans wow the crowds?

My favourite thing about those F1 tweeters is on the ground weather reports.
I really hope Nico does well this weekend!
More weather:
BBC Sport's Andrew Benson at the Nurburgring: "The Eifel mountains looked lovely this morning, with large patches of blue sky and cotton wool clouds. Could we be in for a rare dry Nurburgring day?"
I think Rosberg's top 8 slot will be replaced by Hamilton for this race. The guy's had it too easy for too long this year.
C'mon Timo. Home race, I want a win, or at least, a podium.
I think what I want to happen will happen. My grandads gone to sort it out.
Well now this is kinda funny. Loaded up Live Timing, and it appears as though their commentator has had a fit of rage and bashed his keyboard.
well, and there should be no live comments during this session :-)

Have dropioed it for posterity :)
Good Moaning..
And now "slow slow slow" odd
Hi guys, just to let you know - all you iPhone/iTouch users, you might want to invest in the Internet RadioBOX app. It lets you listen to hundreds of stations but more importantly BBC 5 Live AND Sports Extra. Just tried it out and it does work! :D
Also, the official F1 app - worth it? I'm thinking of getting it now.
From what I can tell it's worth it when it works, but it keeps crashing.
Ahh ok, wait until there's an update then?
did vettel get a haircut?
BBC weather just said it's going to be wet tomorrow for the race.
I missed it. Has he got a buzzcut again?
I now have 5 Live Sports Extra streaming on my iPhone :D
BBC appear to have misplaced their Saturday stream again. Grrr,....
I have it?
nah, it just looks trimmed and neat.
Where? The only link I can find still points to Friday!
http://news.bb...rmula_one/8145221.stm
They are using the energy station as a creche?
Look they even put some of de sebs art on the walls!
Oh was getting scared when the said Timo's new engineer 'Juan Pablo' not themost fortunate first two names.
JB the only driver to finish every single racing lap, says Croftie.
This year, obviously.
Thank you!
Rubens stop tweeting! ;)
Hehehe. Only guy yet to come out.
Anthony rolls "Jaguar" when talking about a rolling Jaguar. Kind of cute...
Please, its not like Lewis has never drove a road car round a track before
http://footballclubonline.com/ch2.html - looks like today it is the South African commentary, not BBC feed
me too but all I can hear is the jingle, no live stream :-)
I liked the cool thermal image, if it was pretty pointless!
damn missed it. was it inside the garage, or the pitlane?
Brawn GP posted this image of Holly Samos and Jenson getting ready for a lap round the Nurburgring. Priceless.
http://drop.io...sset/holly-jenson-jpg
They aren't streaming the F1 today, the cricket starts at 1045.
Fisi's car. Shows how hot they keep those tyres!
Track temp 20C
Air Temp 12 C
Wind speed 5.4 m/s
Humidity 78%
Air Pressure 944.2mBar
Jenson does look like a pizza delivery boy...
is it me, or is that a daft place for a rollercoaster?
was thinking the same thing
it is you Mr me :-)
I think its like the drag race one at alton towers... super acceleration, its supposed to simulate a race start!
Why is Flavio looking at Alonso's car? It's not like he knows anything about cars
Is alonso just watching himself, or does he have neighbours on his screen?
Unless... its the comments!
perhaps he wants to learn something finally :-)
:D
Maybe he like the colours?
The SA commentators saying Toyota need an Alonso or a Kimi. Not impressed with Timo Glock long-term, then?
He probably wants to look useful. Either that or he's lost his wallet in a sidepod...
massa going for a time.
a track cleaning ferrari?
Sidepodwallet?
the South African commentators talking about what Toyota needs, they came out with a team leader suggesting Alonso, Raikkonen or Hamilton
i bet he's found a reflection.
I dont think the Renaults sidepods would be big enough!
Who would've thunk it?
Autosport ran a story a few weeks ago that Toyota wanted to sign Alonso to replace Trulli
Has anybody's BBC feed, just die?
:D
Or Glock if he goes to McLaren.
Jarno did look old though when they looked though his visor...
Yes. Just came back
Glock will not go to McLaren
Oh good, it's back.
oh yes, it was 2005 :(
Someone has to replace Heikki... (Sorry, Amy.)
Nuvo-Mclaren?
He is a rock and roll driver, they are a rock and roll team..
LeeMcK says there's an interview with Ari coming up.
I'm not listening, la la la la.
Wow, should be interesting to see how Ari will handle the PR battle with the fans...
"I think it was the year before"
makes sense since they weren't here last year. Which you have mentioned many times.
Oh I'm picking everything apart today. So mean.
2007 FP3 time - 1:31.396 - Kimi Raikkonen.
Will FI finally score points here in a wet race? FI haven't looked this good since... 2004, when they were still Jordan.
Wow Adrian!
:D
All he is going to say is it is time for a change and that he has been asked to stand by enough clubs to make his campaign worthwhile.
They had a great US GP
Sweet lord, thats my tweet?
RG shoutout!!
I'm still sad that Heikki has no new toys to play with. They should write SORRY AMY on Lewis's diffuser.
yay!
I won't count that.
Button P1. RBR not looking as good here as I thought they would be. Not yet, anyway.
that is mean. on the plus side at least he won't catch fire during the race.
I'm just going for a coke now.
practice schmactice
Their Canada 2004 was better though (except for the mechanic who got run over). The "great" US GP was 2005, except that they were a bit short of challenge. I liked how they went about that race, but not the lack of competition!
HAM purple-purple...
...purple - P1.
Hamilton 1st
by 8 tenths!
You dont have it installed within grabbing distance?
This I can't understand!
goes top. great lap.
"the team mate"
not quite as bad as "the other guy"
nice slow mo!
super slo-mo flying kaz!
maybe they ARE back on the pace. Good enough for Q3, maybe?
Nakajima two-wheeling it over the curb!
i (heart) kaz for that one.
Kaz's front wing looks a lot more rigid than some of tose we saw yesterday
LewHam Glory-pole?
What's the yellow flag for?
oops
Rubens still hasn't set a lap...
yes HE is :)
I am so happy I put Lewsi back in my Fantasy Racers team yesterday
3 laps in succession?
Gonna go now, other business to attend. Will be back for quali, see ya'll later.
with his silly new toys :(
bye rg.
Heikki will have them for the next race now that his test driver has proved they work
go bourdais!
Did anyone crack the 1'31s yesterday?
Bye RG
I like the way your brain works.
nope, lewis' lap was fastest for the day.
Some times it scares me
But not too far!
Is it me or is Ant starting to sound like Mark Blundell
I wonder what's keeping Barri in the garage.
am liking sutil and kaz being in the top 6.
Has this been mentioned here?
http://www.ind...pionship-1741782.html
How did you make the BBC do that?
He always has.
I hope he hasnt lost his steering wheel...
Hi all. Lewis blitzing 'em at present hey.
Never really noticed it befoe
Incredible.
Heikki's way down. He sure is getting the wrong end of the stick from the team.
Cor, those cars are all wibbly in slow-mo.
He looked like he was getting ready to go out.
too busy tweeting probably.
news to me. if he signs the letter, there's nothing to say he'll still by his signature anyhow.
I think Rubens has taken his enforced time out from the car from the car quite well.
I think FOTA should have given Max a pistol rather than a letter of resignation to sign
might be legally binding? but hey, it's a document with his signature on it - still some progress from a verbal agreement.
He resigned in 2004/2005. Two weeks later he unresigned
Where's RG when you need him?
Timo P2.
I still think a pistol is more binding
Ant loves the politics too!
Hey. I made it for some of a free prac session :-)
That wouldn't have helped - FOTA would have been convicted of incitement to murder and there would have been no F1 at all!
oh my god they're not talking through the radio
hi pat. you made it in time to here unhappy nick.
Heidfeld
I have too much bottoming. I have too much understeer because of bottoming. I have brake problems because of bottoming.
Raise the ride height then
the twitter guys at the bottom of the timesheets
Are there any ferrari dragons in the stream? ;)
Ghost lines!
Hamilton much more confident in braking for the hairpin than Kovalainen.
I think it has more to do with aero than confidence
Lose all the downforce?
He's having pwoblems again.
Sutil P5. Nice job.
:D
Y'know it seems as though this is a case of race engineer telling driver what setting to use, and driver getting frustrated because it isn't working
Another momentary yellow. Who cut the chicane?
have given up with the f1 app. now saying i have to buy the £14.99 championship pass.
i bought that during the last race.
No streams then? Sorry to pester.
oops. i didn't encounter that problem here.
boo!
They should have sorted out bottoming yesterday. You can't get a basic set up if the bottom of the car is banging off the ground
As replays go, that was useless! (We just had a black screen with snow on it).
Rain is forecast today. It just arrived here.
Is that what Lewis did on Glock last year?
I had no idea it cost £15, but he seemed pretty happy with it
:)
That reminds me, I was watching BBC News earlier and their weather report. Being a Saturday they said what the weather would be for sports events and they said the rain we have today will be in Germany tomorrow.
:D
wish i could help you out, Mr C. this is when trying to DL the update from iTunes?
I'm so going to have to steal that line.
i open the app and it says i have to buy the pass. it was working fine yeterday.
Have I been frozen out because of my Christine/Smedley comment yesterday?
Hamilton is just flying around the circuit. Much faster than everyone else.
Vettel has slipped to 18th as he comes out again.
very odd, that. try downloading the update from iTunes.
hey rocket. wassup sir?
Fisi 3rd? Sutil 6th? WOO! :D
I am sure you will not be short of company on the naughty step
we're just not posting links/passwords here if thats what you're talking about
Isn't it more likely that no one has the answer?
i repainted it this week. come join me on the posh naughty step.
It's a while since we have seen vortices coming off the rear wings
Yellow flags?
Gone now.
lewis for pole?
Scott, they've been yellow-flagging minor offs all morning. I guess someone's cut the chicane again.
Rain impending, that normally means.
Looks like McLaren plan to scrap the scatter-gun development was a very good one indeed.
Nothing really. Just being precious. Will check for a feed in quali perhaps.
Tato head 4 wheel drift
buemi drifting it!
I take Lewis's time with a grain of salt when there is a FI in 4th + 6th
woo drifting!
Can we watch the whole race in super slow mo please?
Either that or the a brawn.
I think a lot of people might go light just to get clean air
Buemi for a career in D1GP after F1? :D
seriously. register on the link I have posted the last three weekends. Mishy will email you a link and password every weekend and you'll never need to ask again.
guys, is the F1 commentary on five live or five live sports extra?
Fisi for top four?
That would take a looooooooooong time!
shh. that ruins my theory.
You wouldn't get the Debrief done till Thursday
spextra if it is on
Is it just me, or has Webber been faster than Vettel for much of the weekend so far?
Practice? neither. Quali is on 5live at 1300
OMG! Loeb at Toro Rosso? Hell yeah! :D
Neither. My TV EPG shows Gethin Jones on 5L and TMS is on 5LSX
Line comparison is back :D
Well since it's slowed by 1/1500. That would make a race take about half a year.
Because they both go sideways?
vettel did get a lot of running yesterday, but yeah. go webber.
Won't happen. ;)
Sebastien Loeb? What nonsense. PR stuff.
It's more fantasy. He has had a couple of crashes recently so someone has decided that he needs a change
*did NOT
Sorry. Bye all.
Ant you muppet. The humidity is 78% and it is humidity that shows the vortices
I think he'd be great. I watched a video of him in a Red Bull at Silverstone and he looked really confident behind the wheel.
Sutil fastest through the speed trap.
tweet him :)
Dont you need cold air too?
I know. Kimi wants to go rallying and Loeb wants to go to F1. Why don'tthey just swap seats?
I haven't opened tweetdeck in a week
So, now I want to watch the whole race in thermo super-slo mo.
They've been all out with the TV magic so far this weekend, no?
who gave predator a paddock pass?
Be careful what you wish for? ;)
What you see is the moisture in the air. I am sure you need a certain temperature range but Ant is talking nonsense saying it is air density
Loeb in a Ferrari? I dunno, doesn't really fit for me.
...wha...? Should I put it on the list?
RB tweeted half way though the session 'Car to go pro'
yep.
BMW sound really, really unhappy...
'Parently Mr Schumi is turning up today.
BMW actually admitting they're just slow!
Loeb in an F1 car doesn't fit.
Ah, i thought he said temp...
purple kimi s3.
Ahh Ralf ;)
Also Nick in an LMP1... does not fit :(
I think it does.
massa and kimi both looking pretty good with only 5 mins to go.
I tried! Im sure the drivers have no bones
Just PK in the garage.
Are they trying to copy Franck?
Ah I thought you mean the German one :-)
Gah, scratch that.
Wy dont they use electronic displays for the pit boards and save some time?
lewis 1st
hekki 14th
#sorryamy
Aren't air temperature and density are interrelated? Cooler air is denser than hot air.
I'm getting the feeling I was wrong and my grandads after life is not the Nurburgring
So Lewis is going to 'do a Rosberg' this weekend then?
Hehe!
sutil has spent the whole of this hour in the top 10.
Yes but dense air on its own is not enough. He was saying that the humidity was low and all that was needed to see the vortices was air density
purple p3 from alonso. puts him third.
vettel... slow. only 8th.
Did i miss something?
Where's this rollercoaster then?
main straight.
until now.
Clearly I have missed something as that makes no sense to me
From James Allen:
#f1 Ham doing low fuel simulation, Button and Red Bulls working on race fuel load. So far RBR not looked as fast as yesterday
as i say that... he drops to 12th :(
he passed away this morning, I like to think he's gone to the Nurburgring to sort them out.
Indeed?
webber not been bad, but vettel is either very heavy, or struggling.
Oh Amy, I'm so sorry to hear that :(
He's probably watching the Ashes isn't he?
Aww, sorry to hear that. :-(
Sorry to hear that, Amy.
Yellow flag for Alonso? That makes a change from his team-mate!
alonso has a last minute spin.
Sorry to hear that Amy :( . We're all here if you need us.
Massive difference between him and ol' PK.
its ok, he was sick for ages so we're all happy he's not going through that anymore :)
he didnt like cricket, to be honest he'd probably be watching cartoons :D
Oh, Im Sorry.....
Im sure he will do his best
Good FP3, BRB for Quali!
That makes it easier then. I wish him the best of luck in sorting them out at the Nurburgring
Not looking great for Bordy, is it?
That's how I felt with my Gran - and that's perfectly OK to feel like that...
They need a good dose of NZ straight talking.
One is taking this seriously, the other one wants to be on AUTOSPORT
no.
I think he is probably looking forward to the Petit Le Mans
Qualifying looks to be quite interesting. For once, I have no idea how it will unfold.
My guess is Heikki can't understand the accent.
alonso's front spinner, is umm, slowly spinning,
He can't even win in the Peugeot though. Champ Cars ruined him, didn't they?
New cylinders?
Having not seen McLaren, Ferrari or Renault at the top of timesheets together for a while, seeing that feels a bit weird!
He better learn then. No wonder he is struggling in team NZ if he can't get the accent
cheers everyone, shall be back with a qually thread around 11:30.
Damn spec series *shakes fist at all relevant series*
They see him rolling....They hating...
Wait ... it needs the video
http://www.you...m/watch?v=E6Zc9NyYH-k
It seems to have. The American fans want him back.
That would be interesting if he went back and dominated again
He wouldn't go back, and if he did he wouldn't dominate. Different series, different cars, more competition.
I'm currently sending the latest version of the comparitor to drop.io.

Kazuki Nakajima-Giancarlo Fisichella
Sebastien Buemi-Robert Kubica
Sebastien Bourdais-Nelsinho Piquet
Heikki Kovalainen-Adrian Sutil
Race
Jenson Button-Sebastian Vettel
Mark Webber-Giancarlo Fisichella
Felipe Massa-Rubens Barrichello
Kimi Räikkönen-Nick Heidfeld
Jarno Trulli-Fernando Alonso
Nico Rosberg-Robert Kubica
Timo Glock-Adrian Sutil
Kazuki Nakajima-Sebastien Bourdais
Sebastien Buemi-Lewis Hamilton
Heikki Kovalainen-Nelsinho Piquet
how does it work?
how does it work? {Comment #296}
Long story, but good question.
I put in all the data from this year, as well as the results of the predictions from last year. (I have to do some stuff in the Quali tab in order to make it work fully, so it's not quite fully automated).
There are six tabs for preliminary predictions - basically it uses mean, mode and median analyses on both the pure 2009 results and the combined 2009/2008 results.
The comparitor then compares the six tabs to find out which gives the closest match between the session in question and the qualifying/race for a given driver. These results are shown in the "aggrecomparitor" tab.
After that, I look at which of the sessions had so far in a weekend give the closest match to the qualifying/race performance for each driver. Then I input which session it was and what position was attained by the driver. This is done separately for qualifying and the race.
The comparitor then compares the results (adjusted where necessary to take remaining variance and, in the case of the race, retirements, into account). It then yields the positions. I copy-and-paste these into a spare part of the spreadsheet, sort them manually and that is how it works.
I've got a little scared of looking too closely at the inner workings of the spreadsheet recently because I worry that it might have grown new bits when I wasn't looking.
