Live: Germany - Free Practice 3

Published

By Christine Blachford

An amazingly interesting Friday, compared to what Free Practice usually offers up, leads into the best day of the weekend - qualifying day.

Weather Update

Clubforce tweets that the: "Weather much better this morning, warmer and sunny. Chance of rain later." Sounds par for the course at the Nurburgring.

One to Watch

Following yesterday's exploits, there are so many! I want to put Force India again, but I am going to go with Rosberg. Williams confirmed that they aren't doing low-fuel runs anymore, so where will he legitimately end up?

Predictions Please

Will Free Practice have any resemblance to qualifying? Will there be any crashes? Will the weather hold out? Can any Germans wow the crowds?

BBC Sport's Andrew Benson at the Nurburgring: "The Eifel mountains looked lovely this morning, with large patches of blue sky and cotton wool clouds. Could we be in for a rare dry Nurburgring day?"

Hi guys, just to let you know - all you iPhone/iTouch users, you might want to invest in the Internet RadioBOX app. It lets you listen to hundreds of stations but more importantly BBC 5 Live AND Sports Extra. Just tried it out and it does work! :D

Also, the official F1 app - worth it? I'm thinking of getting it now.

He wouldn't go back, and if he did he wouldn't dominate. Different series, different cars, more competition.

    how does it work? {Comment #296}

    Long story, but good question.

I put in all the data from this year, as well as the results of the predictions from last year. (I have to do some stuff in the Quali tab in order to make it work fully, so it's not quite fully automated).

There are six tabs for preliminary predictions - basically it uses mean, mode and median analyses on both the pure 2009 results and the combined 2009/2008 results.

The comparitor then compares the six tabs to find out which gives the closest match between the session in question and the qualifying/race for a given driver. These results are shown in the "aggrecomparitor" tab.

After that, I look at which of the sessions had so far in a weekend give the closest match to the qualifying/race performance for each driver. Then I input which session it was and what position was attained by the driver. This is done separately for qualifying and the race.

The comparitor then compares the results (adjusted where necessary to take remaining variance and, in the case of the race, retirements, into account). It then yields the positions. I copy-and-paste these into a spare part of the spreadsheet, sort them manually and that is how it works.

I've got a little scared of looking too closely at the inner workings of the spreadsheet recently because I worry that it might have grown new bits when I wasn't looking.
