Apparently, according to the people's encyclopedia, Dublin was founded on this day in 988AD. If ever there was cause for a celebratory Guinness that would be it, but get this - Odense in Denmark was founded on the same day. Double the fun! Anyway, here is some F1 stuff to keep us going this Friday:

  • Tis Free Practice day, so expect some live commenting threads to appear throughout the day, and an F1 Digest episode later. It looks as though the weather is going to be pretty changeable over the weekend, with Friday and Saturday currently showing as rainy. That'll make for some interesting sessions!
  • I don't know about anyone else, but I am falling more and more to my happy place - so don't forget that if you're on Twitter, you can use the hashtag #f1happyplace to add to the fun. There are no rules about what goes in there, as long as it will cause a smile.
  • Pat has begun the mammoth task of writing up his Goodwood adventures. So far we have pictures and a blog entry about bikes. Can't wait for the rest!

That'll do it for now. Here's hoping Friday is a good one, and as ever, let us know if you have any plans for the weekend - other than joining us for all the sessions, obviously. I'll see you in the comments.

Well. Your invitation to advise on what I'm up this weekend has coincided with a quiet moment at work so here goes. Big weekend in sport and other things for me with the top drawcard of course Nurburgring. Not sure whether to put a "the" in front of the name. Feels a bit like saying "looking forward to the grand prix at THE Albert park". I stand to be corrected on that. Hoping for a good showing by MW and Red Bull and interested to see if the predicted cooler weather does impair the Brawns as everyone says it will. Other sports catching my interest are Le Tour which heads into the mountains this weekend. The lovely pics by the host broadcaster should continue, they really know how to utilise a steadicam chopper shot. The cricket looks to be moving into a fascinating stage over the weekend too from Cardiff. Despite a particularly reserved Australian team I expect them to slowly fire up. There was talk of an official letter going out to the team saying they needed to be polite to their England foes. My Rugby Laeague team the Canberra Raiders play this weekend against the Newcastle Knights. Finally the space shuttle Endeavour is due to launch Sunday morning AEST but the weather looks rather similar to Germany with just a 40% chance of launch at this stage. So plenty to watch and thanks for reading this far. I am minding my 10 month old daughter Alexandria for most of the weekend as Mrs Rocket is doing overnight shift work and will be sleeping through the days. Busy and fun times ahead as I inculcate my daughter in the ways of formula1. Cheers and bring on Germany!

It's taking a while. I'm actually trying to write the weekend preview to slot in amongst it, but it isn't going well. Keyboard issues. Temporarily solved *crosses fingers*

Alexandria. Cool name. I have been told that I will be vetoed with my baby name of choice - Mercedes Porsche (Portia?) Ann. Brock has also been shot down.

If you have children, did you reference the racing world? Or, if you do have a child, what will you call it?

It is, but Bernie requires 4 races to be broadcast by broadcast networks I guess to build viewership. It's all BS, the F1 fans are the F1 fans and they want their races live.

agreed. do the commentators move stations, or do you get a different bunch for four races?

A couple years ago they did no prerace (Peter Winsor) and they had different announcers. Fox must have gotten such a backlash that the SPEED TV crew now does the prerace and the race like they should. Bob Varsha, Steve Matchett (former Benetton Mechanic) and David Hobbs (All allround good guy... very funny also

Yes, if it were a boring (NASCAR) race, there would be 5 hours of prerace BS, Indycar barely gets a 30 min prerace show.

I run PlayTV through my PS3 and I love it so much, even though 18 months after being announced its still not on sale here. It'll probably flop if/when they do release it because almost the entire group of PS3 owning people nerdy enough to want one have imported from the UK already.

I think he knows what's going on, more than anything. This is the same guy who called for Max's head yesterday. Since he's a friend of Bernie's, I think Bernie may have briefed him on the situation. And what he was told satisfied him enough to believe Bernie.

He also owns Fairfax Media who own The Age which is where this is printed. Rumblings around the city have been hugely negative over the last 24 hours, he needs to restore confidence in the AGPC and the fact there will be a race here even though yesterday he said there possibly wouldn't be.

I love that on the website the paper is running a 'is the Grand Prix worth keeping poll'
the only people who comment on articles like that are the ones who find F1 boring and thus think the race is a waste of time/money. A very, very vocal minority of local residents :) The Save Albert Park team do amuse me though.

melbourne flirts with keeping the race even without all the fota issues so i hope it works out. you could just go and hang out in the airport for stalking purposes. or get a job in the local zoos as drivers always go there for PR reasons.

You can have great fun with that. I sat next to two Coca Cola men on a flight once. They spent two hours loudly dicussing there sales plan for the next year. So instead of asking them to be quiet every 5 minutes I waited till we were getting off the plane and told them Pepsi thanks you for the market research you have provided us with. I don't see what the point of them doing all those other things they did this week if they don't pay attention to them. Everytime she does anything Jane falls apart. 3 times now someone else has had to finish off her food for her so they could serve it on time. She's spent more time outside crying than doing anything else....

    It's back now.

Glad that Vatanen will run for the FIA presidency. Have fun guys, let's hope the race will be a blockbuster or at least something similar.

Putting together forces with other F1 fan groups, those guys are radical - they want to tear FOTA & the FIA apart, sort of. Interesting proposition. I fear I'll have to spend all my money on trip to FOTA headquarters as nobody is willing to actually meet people. Weird.

Health and safety rubbish, I bet. Someone was probably worried children would think they could fly and would test the theory. Whereas they'd only be disappointed by a lack of wings sprouting.

I was thinking of quickly saying "here's Lou who won a prize in your helmet design competition". Normally they ignore people saying stuff but you'd think his own competition winner would be enough - but it would rely on amazing timing which I'm notoriously bad at.

OK sorry to to bring up politics, but this has been annoying me...

It pretty much sums up the stupidity of the whole situation. Its an extract from the FIA's press release yesterday

This is because of the International Sporting Code and also because the entered teams have a contract with the FIA which not even the General Assembly or the World Council can abrogate. Anyone with an elementary knowledge of motor sport governance knows this. Imagine the uproar if, after the FOTA teams had entered, the World Council were subsequently to change the rules without asking them

Im sorry, this crisis started how!?

Ok rant over, sorry about the politics.

The parts I heard were identical to any interview you'd see during a race weekend, although I later wondered if the good stuff would have followed on when he opened up more. I'd moved on by then, wanted to get to the top of the hill before the F1 cars - failed at that.

I'm just emptying my brain of Goodwood stuff at the mo, writing stuff as they happened. Gavin knows the format from F1NGers.
I've got 11 months of blogging under my belt and I've found if you stick to the politics or the driver form, things get repetitive very quickly, so you have to invent other stuff.
    I've got graphs planned.
