It is Independence Day today, although Mr C and I also recognise it as the day Will Smith helps save us from aliens. Bruce has got the meteorites covered and Will knows what he's doing with those UFOs, what could go wrong? Anyway, here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • What's going on with Alan Donnelly then? The story is that Virgin are moving their sponsorship, which is fair enough. Their relationship with Brawn has been dwindling almost since the first race. So, what does this Donnelly fella have to do with it?
  • Over on the F1 Big Pic, we took the challenge of covering the Valencia story. What were the chances of finding a decent pic of that instantly forgettable race? I am mightily disappointed the green building didn't make the pic, but we should be able to see more of that if there is less seating around.
  • Finally, Alianora has written a great post about her daily process of finding out what's going on in the world of F1, detailing which sites she visits and in which order. Would love to hear other people's routines as well.

That'll do it for now. It's Goodwood Saturday, so we'll still be keeping an ear and eye out for any pics or tweets cropping up. As always, I'll see you in the comments.

    Oh.dear.lord.

Bernie thinks Max should be Prime Minister.

[Max] would, Mr Ecclestone says, make an excellent Prime Minister. “I prefer strong leaders. Margaret Thatcher made decisions on the run and got the job done. She was the one who built this country up slowly. We’ve let it go down again.

“All these guys, Gordon and Tony, are trying to please everybody all the time . . . Max would do a super job, he’s a good leader. I don’t think his background would be a problem.”

I wish this was just Bernie's weird sense of humour, but I think he's actually being serious.

He doesn't think Max's background would be a problem. It was the last time he set up a political party with his father. The one good thing about him screwing up motor racing is that he is not involved in real politics. Besides he would not make as much money doing that.

Technically though he's not supposed to be making money from the FIA Presidency - he just coincidentally became rich at the same time ;)

and people don't keep retweeting hosting companies brand names over here.

for me it is to communicate with different groups of people about different things. luckily i've avoided most of the spam, still get the odd spammer follower but they are avoidable. presumably your problem is they @ you to get your attention, which is harder to avoid..

tbh this is the same for me. the people i found either from my having a blog, or who led me to have a blog, mostly all of them are on twitter. it is interesting talking about a topic with one group and having people from another group weigh in with their perspective.

If the Beeb are doing it that's a matter for their internal policy unit. They know full well they shouldn't be involved in commercial matters.

i don't think they understood what they were doing. but then i don't think half the people retweeting the name know why they're doing it.

    and that makes it worse.

This is very true unless they can develop much improved controls. I'm not convinced they will do it. If they don't, another service will come along and replace it, until the spammers work their way around that..

there is a bit of a 'sheep' culture on it. something gets momentum so everyone feels as though they have to do it. trouble is, every social network will be the same after a certain critical mass and "the great unwashed" get aboard.

The part of the UK I live in still hasn't recovered from Margaret Thatcher's attentions (particularly the way she destroyed the miner's unions and, indirectly, the entire industry). The moment I saw the headline, I thought "Good thing for him he's in F1, else he'd be out of a job for saying that". Bearing in mind that this is the same bloke who wasn't told off by CVC or anyone else who might have had power over him (as far as I know) for saying that women should wear white to match other kitchen appliances in 2006, I think he'll get away with this. Doesn't mean it's right :(

As my mum often says, "It's no use galloping if you are going in the wrong direction". Hitler may have been good at galloping but his sense of direction was so seriously misguided that he forever tarred the philosophies he espoused, including the ones (like collective organisation) that might have been beneficial to the world if wiser people with stronger senses of ethics had been in control.

Twitter is a conversation tool. Starting conversations and joining in those conversations of other people that look interesting will help a lot.

Though to be honest, I'm going off Twitter for its refusal to function, seemingly whatever I try to get it to work. At this rate, it will be going in the same bin as BATRacer for the exact same reason.

I like to keep informed on F1 stuff and to have lots of different perspectives on it. While it's possible to get quite a few here, having the professional versions, the views of other sorts of amateurs and even the odd bit of aggregation helps a lot.

It's also why I prefer Formula 1 Yearbook over Autocourse (I find Autocourse sees things in a very similar way to F1 Racing, and I already get that all year, whereas F1Y is written by French people - even if that sometimes shows in incomplete translations...)

Incidentally, when I had Twitter working, I used to start that up as soon as I'd finished looking at grandprix.com. I'd search for "lacanta" (not everyone remembers to stick @ in front), "F1", "Formula 1" and some keywords relating to favourites. This used to get some interesting conversations, including with someone who works for Force India (and I don't mean @clubforce). Since not everyone is everywhere, there is always going to be a benefit to roaming across cyberspace rather than staying in one place. The trouble is that it's a question of diminishing returns and one cannot spend all one's time on Formula 1, however interesting it is (I believe Jeremy is discovering the truth of this last statement)...

My guess is they would be - but Bridgestone are supposed to allow demonstration tyres to be used for events like this. There's no rule forbidding new parts from being run in that instance anyway. Clearly these are just excuses - perhaps they're simply trying to avoid a potential repair job in the week.

Me, that Lada pic you found yesterday is 2110 not the Priora. 2110 was designed in the late 1980s (see - I'm a Lada expert!) and became a big hit in the former USSR republics in mid-1990s, while new production model called Priora (no idea what's that supposed to mean) uses an outdated Renault chassis and engine combined with slightly modified 2110 bodywork. Not sure what engine does WTCC Priora uses, must be some mutant version of somebody else's engine. Lada is a sad story, I personally think IRC would've suited them better.

I agree, Lada has a model called Kalina, which looks a bit like 1990s Opel/Vauxhall Corsa, about the same size. It doesn't look as monstrous as Priora, they should've used it instead. The whole story behind Lada's participation in WTCC is a mystery to me: the Russian government bought the factory back from this guy Boris Berezovsky and his gang and tried to restore some national pride so to speak, because 1990s Ladas were simply falling apart right after leaving the conveyor belt, the quality was next to zero. Besides Lada doesn't sell cars in Western Europe as far as I'm concerned, but they do a lot within the former USSR, they had huge sales in the last 4 or 5 years, like the 4th place in the world ranking or something. This year's been a total misery, Putin had to inject muchos roubles (russian money) into Lada and they have a hefty debt towards parts suppliers. You might wonder why on Earth am I writing all this? Professional in a way, I've part-time job at a plastic injection mould factory, Lada's suppiers used to order a lot in Portugal.

Anyway, I hope it's the last race held in Porto, Portimão is the place to be and so it'll be next year.

's-tbox' in Russian should sound like 'govno', stress or emphasis is on the 1st syllable, now you can teach Thommo!
