It is young Sebastian Vettel's birthday today, so I suppose he is one year less young now. I wonder if he will ever not be "young" Seb? Anyway, the first person to mention Little Britain gets a lifetime ban from Sidepodcast (this sentence not included, obviously). Here are some of the community things happening:

  • Scott's Puma fan report finally went up on their site, and it's a really great read with some fabulous photos. There was also a really good video, although that seems to have gone MIA (grrr, Bernie). If you did manage to catch the video, please join me in the call for Scott to replace EJ on the BBC.
  • Gavin's been away on a trip to Norway, and took some ace photos. I do like some good holiday snaps. Also, get used to the sharing of photos, as I'm expecting to link to plenty more from those going to Goodwood. Take lots of pictures on our behalf and we'll share them with the crowd.
  • Finally, this isn't directly community related, but I wanted to give a quick plug to the DarkUFO LOST Episode Cup. The competitions on this site were our inspiration to run the character and circuit cups on SPC, so props to them. Also, if you like LOST, go vote!

That's all for now. As it is Friday, let us know what your plans are for the weekend. We're not going to Goodwood, so we'll probably be around (as if we wouldn't have been anyway!). I will see you in the comments.

Only good one is the first one.

According to the director of 1 and 2, when they ran out of money part way through filming the second one the finance company closed everything down, told him to sling his hook, cut together what extant footage there was and released it.

    Want something to talk about?

Actually come to think of it, I was going over something in my head today at work.

I think Jenson prefers hot conditions to Rubens in races. Jenson's got a smoother driving style than Rubens so he'll use his tyres less but probably takes longer to get heat into them. In colder conditions, like at Silverstone, Rubens seemed to cope better as he was probably able to get his tyres up to temperature quicker than Jenson which could have been why he had a podium. But then when it gets hot, Rubens overcooks his tyres and with the higher temperatures, this aids Jenson to get heat into his and still drive smoothly at the same time.

So then the question is, if it is cold enough to suit Barrichello, is it too cold for a Brawn win?

Interesting. If Rubens can generally have a good weekend and Jenson fall into one or two problems, he should get at least one win this season. Also depends on what Red Bull get up to as well.

It would suit some drivers of some cars. I have said since the start of two compound racing that Bridgestone should bring its full range of tyres to each race and let the drivers run what they like. If Rubens can get equal performance to Jenson with a slightly harder tyre let him have it. If Lewis's style demands a hard tyre let him have it. If there is something about the Red Bull that needs two soft tyres, a super soft and a medium let them have it.

Let everyone set their cars up to get their best performance all the time and the gaps will be reduced and we get rid of utterly unsuitable tyres for ever.

Don't know if this has been covered but Branson is switching to Manor with a shareholding which I assume is what held up the Brawn deal. I am sure giving him a shareholding appealed to Ross at the start of the season but not when he saw what the car was capable of.

Also it looks like Autosport is trying to out Donnelly.

seems like a massive waste of money to me. bring just enough tyres to last the weekend and tell the drivers to adapt.

i'm not a fan of pandering to unique styles (back to the kimi argument, i guess). drivers need to learn to work around these issues, not expect a tyre manufacturer to bend over backwards to suit their particular turn in style.

That is like telling a left footed football player he can only kick the ball with his right foot. It is all to do with how the brain is wired. It can't be changed. Some drivers are adaptable in the same way that some sportsmen are ambidextrous.

It is precisely the same as telling him to use his left foot. Kimi's brain like Lewis's has been wired to detect the front end of the car gripping and the rear stepping out and to deal with the consequences. Alonso's and Massa's have been wired to deal with the front end sliding. Now in their 20s tou want them to re-wire their brains.

To add to the tyres debate - with Bridgestone bringing consecutive compounds to Nurburgring, Hungaroring and Valencia (& Spa too I think) then the difference mightn't be so drastic, and they might stop enforcing the huge gap. Also, I'm not sure only 1 tyre would work, because you can't predict the weather months in advance, but they have to do the tyre allocations way ahead of time; if Silverstone had been one weekend later - in the heat wave - then the tyre effect might have been different.

Why not get the teams to look at the conditions, their car and their drivers and choose one compound for each race (for each driver) - then they can only use that tyre (presuming it stays dry). That way only (however many allocations of tyres they have per weekend, is it 7 or is that sat/sun?) one type of dry tyre has to be shipped out and the teams can win/lose on that decision so there is still some strategy involved.

A lot of the junior formulae have one tyre. A lot of drivers look really good in some classes and then have one year in one class where they just can't get on top of it. The difference is that the races are not as long or as fast so the car is more consistent throughout so if they can dial in a set up that lets them drive then it will generally last throughout the race.

It is a complicated situation involving the driver's ability and preferences, the car design and variability over a race distance and tyres. All I am saying is if the tyres are made in Japan and shipped to a warehouse in England it seems stupid not to ship them to the track so that each driver can get his ideal set up.

It would also give Bridgestone a lot more publicity than they get now. Imagine if everyone had a freehand we would all be discussing how Jenson has 4 soft tyres but Rubens has 3 softs and a medium on the front left. I'll admit to growing up in a family where Lada was the car of choice (because there were no Western brands around in the 1980s) but honestly for a guy like James it's a step backwards. It's like hearing Kurt Cobain singing a Michael Jackson song, not that any of them could do it on Earth right now.

If I wanted to watch "one-size-fits-all" competition, I'd go to my local JobCentre. Sports in general, and F1 in particular, are far more prepared to tailor themselves to the reality that everyone is different. Blocking that attempt with something as important as the tyres seems daft - especially when Bridgestone has already made the tyres en masse and delivered them to its storage facility (it uses the same four compounds per season, so for efficiency reasons does a mass of one compound followed by a mass of the next compound).

In case the compounds they initially used were completely inappropriate at a given track, or else if they had a change of mind at the last minute like they have with the summer quartet of races (it's too late for them to make a new batch for at least some of those races now, since tyres need between 6 and 8 weeks to manufacture).

Actually it only takes 1 week to make the tyres. It then takes 7 weeks for someone to paint the stripes on half of them.

sidepodspace update - The moon looks like the moon!!

A couple of weeks ago-ish we watched the launch of the LRO/LCROSS mission to the moon. The Lunar Reconaissance Orbiter has now sent its first pictures back and the moon looks a lot like the moon in them. The smallest feature that can be seen is about 3 metres so quite how much use that is when picking landing sites I don't know. Also NASA being NASA have decided to put north at the bottom of the pictures. Is it any wonder they have so many problems?

I thought the resolution was better than 3 metres, there was a discussion on Slashdot about finally being able to show the conspiracy theorists they are wrong. Someone replied that the only way to convince them would be to take them to the Moon, preferably without a space suit.

It is too late to convince the conspiracy theorists. They would just claim the LEM bits that are legt were sent later. I just want to know how the cameras they left on the moon tracked the LEMs as they took off.
