It's Thursday now, which is never a good thing, but more importantly, it is Waterloo Day. This is to do with the battle and not to be confused with April 6, which is the Abba day. Anyway, here are some F1 related things to talk about:

  • Nick has written his first couple of posts on a new F1 blog - Racing Politics. What a great time to start up a politics blog, there is loads to discuss! It's a good first post, and the header picture is pretty nice too.
  • Former British champions have been talking up all things British, with Mansell suggesting that Button might be the best thing since sliced bread, whilst Hill is sure that Formula 1 is going to miss Silverstone. Well, yes, it will, but he would say that, wouldn't he?
  • Joe has a nice and cynical take on some of the latest FIA/FOTA happenings, which naturally appeals to us if only because it has the words conspiracy theory in there.
  • Finally, Mr C pointed out a really good video from the Beeb with Jenson Button, in which the championship leader takes part in 'Fastermind', a take on the good ol' question and answer format. Highly recommended.

That'll do for now. Please keep your great comments coming, we love to hear from you. I do, especially on Thursdays, they make my day. I'll see you in the comments.

Nothing wrong with Thursdays. Thursdays are when Autosport arrives at my door. Thursdays are the bridge between Hump Day and Friday.
They beat Tuesdays. Tuesdays are just filler.

ok. we have some new, but not very exciting technology to try out. amy and christine have been testing it already and you can now all view it at the following url:

    http://www.sid....com/realtime/mobile/

the plan is to provide some kind of simple doohickey for mobile users with old phones. those who don't have G1, iPhone, Pre or Blackberry handsets.

at the moment it actually requires manual refreshing, but you should be able to comment on any thread like doohickey. quoting isn't possible though. just reading and responding is all it's designed to do right now.

anyhow, please give it a whirl and throw any suggestions this way. cheers.

Seems bloody awesome to me. It is a bit clunky on my generation of phone but you'd expect it to be. This has opened up mobile realtime comments which weren't previously available. If I make it to Goodwood it will come in VERY handy if we do a meet-up.

hehe. for me, its the enhancements to safari browser. but other updates will start to make sense in the future.

for example, push notifications could be interesting.

it's handy that notes sync properly. and i think you can buy tv shows directly on the device which is handy.

I'm really not sure how the tethering is meant to work. I don't have my laptop here, so I can't check right now. I'll have to see if the Apple web site has more howto information on that. It works with the blackberry, so the iphone should now do it, which would be great.

At the time he drove for them Williams has BMW engines and this was before BMW had their own team. THe marriage between Williams and BMW was acrimonious so I wonder if he was on the BMW side of the split. Button bought his way out of his Williams contract to sign for Honda so I wonder if there is some bad feeling to Williams as a result.

F1 Fanatic is setting one up, but it's on Facebook so I haven't got the foggiest idea about the details.

Setting up one now will be very difficult because my weekend is now planned assuming I won't be meeting anyone else (and my dad's with me so I'd have to clear any meetings with him).

If anyone does find out or intend to generate any meet-ups, please could they send me a comment at my blog since that's the only place on the internet I'm going to be reasonably in a position to use during the weekend?

If Andy's having anything like the same experience I do, that PDA/network combo struggles with pictures, never mind the complexities that form the typical Sidepodcast page. This is part of the reason why my browsing is very limited when I'm using that device (the other is that this page would cost 14.4p per refresh, despite having few comments at the moment).

I'm currently writing up a formal letter/proposal to our headmaster detailing my plans for developing one of the spare rooms in our school, and asking for his thoughts and if we can go ahead (I’ve been asked to do develop the room by the deputy head). I was just wondering if anyone had any advice for writing formal proposals? i don't want to come across as rude or anything.

Lou, in writing an email, start with a formal greeting to your headmaster. Then first thing you do is to explain why you're writing (i.e. about the spare room). Then next paragraph, go into the details (i.e. what will happen to it, why it will benefit the school). Last paragraph should contain next steps (ask for his thoughts and his kind permission to go ahead).

How formal you need to be depends on how formal your headmaster is. As your reader, you have to assess his personality and your relationship with him. You can work from there.

ahh thanks Journeyer :) that helps alot. It's not an email, it's got to be a typed document that i can print off and give to him. Head of sixth form said she'd read it through for me and make sure it was alright but your advice helps alot. As a new prefect i don't really want to upset him/ do the wrong thing just yet ;)

    Mosley offers compromise on 2010
    BBC
    Autosport

    In a nutshell:
    - 2-year glide path for budget cap
    - independent auditors for budget cap
    - 2009 rules will apply for engines
    - some changes in the ICA?

    In return,
    - commitment needed by tomorrow
    - work under 1998 Concorde Agreement until a new one can be drafted

Hmmm... Is this good enough for FOTA? I think it depends on what changes are made in the ICA. If it gives FOTA more say on how rules are drawn up, they may just bite...

    Money isn't Max's patch - that's Bernie's.

As for power, it depends on what this means (from AUTOSPORT):

He has told teams that he is prepared to discuss the FIA's International Court of Appeal, and also remove the controversial Appendix 5 to the 2010 Sporting Regulations. This latter element had angered teams, who feared that it gave the governing body carte blanche to impose whatever rules they wanted.

So the FIA is effectively giving up some of its power. Will that be enough? It depends on how confident FOTA is of pulling off a breakaway, I guess.

You find, or at least I do, that you do tend to put a lot more of your unconscious mind out in to the open with creative writing.

Whereas the traditional blog post about "I am doing this, now I'm doing this other thing, now I'm doing this" is more often about what you do rather than what you think or feel.

For me there is a vast difference between the two.

Blogging is more: "This happened to me and I think you might enjoy reading about it because it's likely happened to you too."

Poetry and fiction is: "This is a subject close to me that I have chosen to write about. I am making it all up. This is my imagination at work. You may or may not like it."

    Hey guys and gals,

I know Batracer is on the unmentionables list so I hope Mr and Mrs C won't hunt me down, but I just wanted to bring this up as our current game is now one race from over.

The question has been lodged whether anyone would be interested in another game. So far we have 3 particpants, myself included, and the reason I'm bringing it up here is because we are recruiting.
The exact series hasn't been decided yet, so if you have any preference just shout. Personally I'd like a 2002, 2005 or 2007 game,a lthough I've heard the 2005 series are quite hard/annoying.

So please, if there's any interest just let yourself be heared. There is no wiki-page as of yet, because we do want to make sure we have a good deal of participants first. Once we do, we can start setting up the game and the wiki-page for you to sign up!

There was a great feature on the Daily Show where one of their reporters went to visit the New York Times. The editor of the times was saying about how it was really expensive to collect news and without collecting news nobody would know anything.

The guy from the daily show says, "Okay cool, so can you show me today's newspaper?"

    "This is today's newspaper."

Unfortunately Lou display cars tend to be old cars tarted up to look like the real thing. I always have a laugh when you see people on the floor at shows trying to get a view of some hidden piece or some 'expert' explaining to his mate the technicalities of the car when it is quite clearly an entirely different car.

yeah i know, the car at goodwood last year was the ra107, but i would have thought they would have used either a car that looked like the current one, or no car at all for the photo. it just surprised me.. i suppose i was hoping as they wouldn't be running the car at goodwood and they have been doing really well it would at least look right...

It doesn't take very much effort at all. For me that is the problem. It just isn't involving enough to play it more than a few times

This is different, the competitors are breaking away, not a promotor.

This is more like USAC vs CART in the late 70s.

Worked a treat in boxing until there were 5 bodies or more organising championships. Everyone who is against the breakaway acts as if CART/IRL is the only breakaway of any kind ever.

Personally I think we need to have a break between this and the next batracer game, I've been playing a lot of games on BatRacer and think I need to slow down :D

Also a break might be good becauser fewer people signed up for the 1999 game than the 2009 and it was done right after.

    Oh and avoid 2005 :P

No. They have a problem in some tracks where there are many right hand corners and only one or two left handers for example. If the whole tyre was hard enough to deal with the right handers the left hand side of th tyre would never heat up enough to work. There have been cases where F! and other racing cars have used one compound on one side of the car and a different on on the other or have run three tyres of one type and a fourth that is different. Of course in Max's homogeneous world that is not allowed any more.

Hi Paul. Will you be joining us for any of the F1 sessions over the weekend. We are here for every practise session and quali and the race. There is also a live show before the BBC coverage of the race starts and a live recording of a show on Sunday night

Hopefully, I should atleast be poping by for the race and the live recordings on Sunday. Sadly I'll be working on Saturday while the quali is on for a few more weeks atleast.

The Energy Station is huge and very impressive, easily the biggest thing in the whole paddock.

We popped into the garage and saw the likes of Geoff Willis and saw some of the updates the team are introducing this weekend. The nose looks a bit different - we weren't allowed to take snaps at the new diffuser at the back!

Saw Sebastian Vettel as well and got a few snaps and his autograph. He seems a lot smaller in real-life!

Phone extensions can also degrade the ADSL signal. You should always connect your router to the master socket if at all possible, ideally with a replacement front plate that splits the ADSL out and removes the need to add microfilters to all the extension sockets.

I think it is four days. I need to read the mission brief again. I read it just before the launch was cancelled to make way for the non-launch of the shuttle. I don't think there is anything exciting to see in this mission unless we see the bits that impact the moon or they find Martians up there.

Wikipedia?? I guess there is not as much hurry when you don't have people on board. I am amazed they jettisoned the fairing over the satellites bfore they left the atmosphere. Why not do it in lunar orbit? I know they are trying to minimise space junk but exposing satellites at that stage has to have a risk

Throughout the day it'll most likely be from the iPhone. If there's a break in the schedule and I can access wifi somewhere, I'll have a sit down for a bit and quickly jump in to say hi. But only IF the chance comes up. Most likely be the odd comment from the iPhone throughout the day and then a proper update in the evening back at the hotel via laptop.

I am sure if they agreed to supply Brawn engines and bits free next year I am sure Ross would be only too happy to put a sticker on the car.

I thought they, and McLaren already provided technical support to get them on the grid. Oh well.

No. Force India have partnership agreement that gives them access to KERS etc. Brawn simply buy engines. They don't even get gearboxes let alone KERS or any other goodies

Technically the team is called Brawn Mercedes though is it not? So that is some sort of advertisment

yeah, I know that. I thought I had read that Brawn got assistance for the conversion from Honda though.

Never mind, just seems strange Mercedes didn't at least get the three ointed star on the engine over

They got help to fit the engine in the car as it wasn't designed for that engine, but outside of that not much else

That is just because engine suppliers always get a mention but Mercedes could be cashing in here had they invested a few quid early in the year

If its anything like it is here in Ireland during the race, the weather will be changing from sun, to rain, to hail, back to sun and then some thunder and lighting all in the space off about 10 minutes

I don't get the blood test thing before you can get married in America either. What is the purpose of them?

It's screening for genetic diseases. Idea being that you can tell before you get married if there is a high likelihood of your combinations of genes giving rise to I think Huntingtons, cerebral palsy and other things of that sort. I suppose the point is that if you are very likely to have children with genetic illnesses it would be better to know before you procreate, or better still before you get married. Seems quite a clinical process in both senses of the word.
