They've been working all season for this championship and it literally came down to the wire, closer than any of us could have expected. The last F1 Digest of the season fills you in on everything that happened in those 71 laps.
The Race
It was just epic, right from the start. Only two retirees, and just two bouts of rain, but a lot of pitstops later and it came down to the very last corner of the entire race. We also saw some interesting strategies, with mixed results.
Conclusions
Coulthard and Massa are both understandably miserable, one's F1 career has ended in dismal style, and the other has had a rotten end to a tough year. However, there are always two sides to every story, and we have the joy of Vettel, Alonso and Hamilton to balance it all out.

I'm curious about what Kubica said - they started on the wrong tyre because they had duff information. How come Heidfeld's data was okay?
72 digests, you made it ;)
Best finish to an F1 race ever!. All fair and square. No favours for Hamilton from any of the other drivers. F1 at it's toughest...great stuff!. Roll on next season.

I don’t buy the supposition that if Massa’s engine hadn’t blown in Hungary he would’ve been Champion. For that matter any other mishap or penalty in the first two thirds of the season. If things were different in the last 3 races Lewis & MacLaren would’ve pushed as hard as hell rather than go conservative
What happened, happened. And the teams reacted to it
That intrests me, mainly because I'm a BMW fan, but also what he could have impacted on the race had he started on inters, as in on the parade lap
Agreed. The butterfly affect would kick-in. If's and but's are whimsical as far as i'm concerned. It's best to accept what has happened rather than doing your head in thinking things could have been different. Other dynamics would also be a factor.

isn't that what bernie invented the off-season for though?
The FormulaPod guys made a funny comment about Bernie walking on the grid (unusually) on his own like some lost, Alzheimer's adled old-timer.
Either that or it was because he's taken everyone's money :D
I think they were splitting their strategies and thought there'd be a semi-dry line to risk
Either that or Kubica had the duff info :D
Bye F1 Digest, see ya in 2009! :D
The rain was bouncing off the road so hard that they had to postpone the start of the race and announce that there had been a change of climatic conditions. What other info did they need?
Maybe they just felt awkward?
I get the feeling that BMW were trying to split strategies and ended up wrong on Kubica's part.
I have to thank you me and Christine. This stuff was so helpful, because of the time difference and all that jazz, I miss a lot of thing over here on the left coast of America. Without you, Maurice Hamilton's podcast, and the checkered flag podcast, among other there is no way I could track everything for my own interest and the stuff I do for an another F1 website.
Anyhow thanks again, and what the heck are we going to talk about for the next five months?
I still haven't recovered from Sunday. I think I'll only two four months of new topics.
142 days to go.... 14 hours.....14 minutes....
(it's on the F1.com website - i didn't actually work it out)
... I am curious to understand why Kubica, 1 lap down, decided to pass Vettel and Hamilton, then hold up Hamilton to let Vettel past.
Perhaps in the confusion I have the incident wrong, but it did seem the right thing to do.
Maybe I misunderstand the rules or etiquette of the back markers.

For the off season.
1. We can practice pretending that there is ANYTHING green about Formula 1.
You know green strips on the tyres and saving a few gallons of fuel with restricted practices or KERS, compared to the 100,000 of gallons consumed by all the large transports of support trucks and shipping, flying, fans to races etc.
There is NOTHING green in F1. Repeat F1 is not GREEN - ever.
2. Dream that we need cost cutting.
Already this season we could see the compromise on performance by the two engine rule.
Did you notice that every second race, especially with the Ferraris, they were considerable slower -saving their engines.
F1 should be about maximum performance or at least allow a new engine for the last race with no penalty.
Back to cost cutting, agreed there needs to be some restraints, but Max Moaning with his dire warnings are pathetic and with his visions it will soon be Formula_Uniform_Zero_Interest.
3. Thanks again to the Sidepostcast team. You make the F1 season so much more fun and interesting.
Michael
Go McLaren!
ps did you ever do a history on McLaren, the founder and the team?
i think michael's got that one covered.
it'll fly by, i promise.
always a pleasure michael.
don't think so (but this year has been a blur), can do though.
Thanks guys - will download it later for my iPod :-)
(gotta have my F1 fix @ work!)
Hallo, lads and lasses!
The wombat was nowhere to be seen in the last few days, I know, but as always the wombat was watching you. I had some unfinished business to take care of: those animals at RF1 blog were getting out of control, I had to make sure that the order was restored.
Now, I decided to experiment with the last race of the season and was following it on my mobile and watching Sky News at the same time to tease myself, they had some former McLaren or Jordan bloke in the studio who nearly had a heart attack when LH lost his top 5 spot near the end of the race. They were also going live from Silverstone and BRDC pub or whatever with Damon Hill, J. Watson and J. Scheckter sweating and all looking very nervy. It was so much fun, ladies and gentlemen! And I adored celebrations by Massa and Hamilton family at the same time, German TV tried to interview this singer Nicole Schle-something-lh's-girlfriend and she was just screaming some meaningless phrases, there's a video if you click on my name. Then Kai Ebel ran towards HAM's brother and poor fella (the brother, not Kai) fell on the floor and was like having convulsions, I've never seen anybody roll on the floor because of an F1 race. Amazing! Ron was trying to discover hair on top of his in his head, I guess he lost some during that last lap. I want more of that, please.
Then two Eddies gave their views on the phone: Irvine and Jordan. IRV said he needed a cup of tea to calm down and called the FIA decisions this year "stupid". Jordan gave an interesting opinion and said McLaren were a bunch of fools because they didn't put Kova in front of Ferraris in the qualifying to slow Massa down, well, he's right you know, I think Kova with light fuel load could've been on the front row and would've helped LH.
Of course people like feel sorry for Massa but it has to be said he lost the title all on his own with his Sepang spin and Ferrari had some embarrassing engine failures this year, plus he didn't deserve that Spa win now credited to his name by Ferrari International Assistance, so don't you cry tonight, Felipe. Schu acknowledged that F2008 is fast but too difficult to drive, hence the Silverstone spin fest for both MAS and RAI. McLaren did a better job and LH was more consistent, all hail Lewis.
Now for next year I'd like to see night races in Australia, Malaysia and Japan and China to save us from waking up early, wet races in Barcelona and Valencia to save us from siesta and possibly the announcement of Portuguese GP for 2010.
the wombat will be back.
I had to do something similar last week in an episode that will go down in infamy as “flap-gate”…
erm?
Was your world in a sidepodflap?
Had to deal with some out-of-control animals, albeit not on a blog. I’d decided (foolishly) that the best way to ward off a feline interloper which had been helping itself to our cats’ grub would be to set the flap to “in only”, thereby temporarily trapping it in the house and giving it a fright. Things didn’t go according to plan…
Utterly.
hehehehe :D
we didn't do so well with the last awards thingy, but if you're bored:
http://2008.we...ards.org/nominations/
i had a quick scan through and although there is a podcast category, i think we stand a damn good chance with this one:
http://2008.we...est-online-community/
It has to be worth a go. A quick scan of the rules suggest that the number of people who nominate don't matter but I guess an entry for an online community award that only gets one nomination is guaranteed to lose.
I notice someone has nominated a news blog. I guess that means there could be a demand for sidepodnews
awards sites are nuts aren't they?
yeeees!
Oh god this made me laugh today.
Honda's target for next year:
To equal the level of competitiveness of the BMW team.
Easily possible. If they enter GP2.
Sounds good to me. :)
Maybe he is taking about GP2 where they could be third behind Yamaha and Ducati
Or even Moto GP
:D as much as i want to believe that.. ah what the heck.. i need some hope to get me through the off season ;)
That plan could go up in flames :D
i think they call it a burning desire.
Nominated and awaiting moderation. I reckon a blog post linking to the nomination which folk can add comments or a '+' to when up

that may be pushing our luck :)
Was considering the nominate everything in sight approach to get the most categories nominated award but it may be considered spam ;)
compared to scott's antics at the last award ceremony that's nothing :D
Sounds like that needs to go on the wiki
hehehe :D
Nothing to do with F1, but WOOHOO! My other half has just handed me a package containing my new custom made earphones. :D
Now I an lsiten to races at night in comfort without waking her. :D
Cool, so you have uniquely shaped ears or should I say Aural SidePods?
They are unique. :D
Seriously expensive sadly, but they sound amazing. Especially as I have a good mp3 player. *ie - not apple.. ;)*
Lucky guy, my earphones are broken and the ones I use now hurt my ears.
New calendar, along with some other interesting WMSC decisions (including video footage of contentious moments to be made available on FOM and FIA sites):
29/3 Australia
5/4 Malaysia
19/4 China
26/4 Bahrain
10/5 Spain
24/5 Monaco
7/6 Turkey
21/6 Great Britain
12/7 Germany
26/7 Hungary
23/8 Europe (Valencia)
30/8 Belgium
13/9 Italy
27/9 Singapore
4/10 Japan
18/10 Brazil
1/11 Abu Dhabi
Note: The races in Australia and Malaysia will start at 1700 local time, in Singapore at 2000 local time, and in Japan at 1500 local time.
So they are bunking China to third, still don't like Canada. So finishing more or less the same time as this season.
Is that still a provisional calendar?
and france has gone.
cheers stuart.
so just the single night race again.
splitting up china and japan, and making malaysia later should make our lives easier. i pity anyone trying to follow this sport from the states next year :(
Also, Alonso confirmed at Renault for x2 more years, and Piquet for x1.
that'll tie in nicely with both kimi's and massa's expiry dates.
i wonder exactly how badly piquet had to do in order to get fired?
Retire 22 times in one race, 22 of those crashed
Apparently Canada isn’t quite off the table yet – they’re still haggling – but would it fit in that gap between Britain and Germany?
Calendar is provisional until the December meeting.
If this calendar stays as is, I’ll probably have to do the first four GPs – this is going to be very costly (in terms of palliating Mrs C). There’s also the nigh-on impossibility of getting the Chinese visas in time.
how's your baking?
in three months?
You need an “invitation” from a government agency (in this case the circuit) as part of the paperwork; the problem this year was that said invitation didn’t arrive at the visa agency until a couple of weeks before the race...
anyone would think they didn't want you in their country.
asking a daft question... how comes you keep drawing the short straw?
I share the perma-pass with the news ed, who under normal circumstances stays in the office for races that coincide with our print deadline. And it’s more cost-effective for one person to stay out for double-headers…
It's a bit much expecting China to put on a race so early in the new season when they had the second last race this season.
I can't imagine Silverstone are happy about getting a June date rather than their normal July slot.
that's what he tells you :)
maybe they have another expo to promote?
Woot! :D
no but i'm much happier :D hehe as it is not on a weekend where we have to come into school, therefore i can actually go to the GP :D hehe.
The last thing I want to so is dampen your mood but this is still a provisional calendar and if they put Canada or the USA back in then they could end up shuffling dates again.
ah yeah.... hmm.. have almost decided i'm gonna go anyway, would just make life easier if i didn't have to worry about missing school on the Saturday. But if having Canada back on the calender would be worth any hassle the school may give me :)
Look what's available, to I guess pre-order, on the official F1 store! :D
http://f1store...etails.aspx?pid=55624
that may have to be bought :)
Well, looks like Christine's got another editing job to do.....
I do not want to spend all my vaction fixing this speech up.
you're actually recording it? coooool.
I think "may have to" needs to be replaced with "MUST" :D
Check this out, it's a animated short cartoon series called Eckelsteins, which I think translates into English as Ecclestones. This is the only English version I could find at the moment since it's made and shown in Germany, but this one's great. It's from 2007 and Lewis and Fernando literally fight over being No.1 :D See who else you can spot in it too :P

That sounds really rough. As if not seeing your wife for ages wasn't punishment enough...
Though I will say getting a China visa cannot possibly be as impossible for you as it is for me. The Chinese have a rule that stops me from even applying for one because they consider my Asperger's Syndrome to be a mental disorder, and any foreigner with a mental disorder is banned from entering China...
What a peculiar classification and an unnecessarily draconian rule...
I just re-read the calendar and spotted a glaring error in it. Who in their right mind would plan a calendar that has a 4 week gap after Hungary which is always dull. Of course it gives us 4 weeks to look forward to ....Valencia. OOPS.
Errr... hang on, isn't that what they did last year? Hehehe. Maybe they're miraculously expecting Valencia to suddenly give us a good race next year. Or, more probably, they're betting that the new cars will produce better racing there.
As a footnote to the above, I hear tell from a chap who was planning to cover the A1GP at Chengdu that the visa procedure/rules have changed – again!
you sure they're not filming your life for a gameshow or something?
off topic: amusing autosport forum discussion:
http://tinyurl.com/forumhumour
Brazenly made-up quote at the end of the story…
Love it :)
yeah, the article's a waste of bandwidth, but i love the forum entry:
"Was truly disappointed last night. Saw and heard the fireworks and assumed it must be a victory parade for Lewis. Duly went out intent on inviting him for a beer... Turned out it was just some 400 year old tradition."
I like:
"You'd think that us F1 fans would go where the drivers go, but...no, we jus' hang around in Croydon waiting for 'em to turn up."
An enterprising director could probably have conjured the events of ‘flap-gate’ into a Scooby Doo or Benny Hill-style chase sequence, that’s for sure
