The final qualifying for 2008 provided no end of surprises and sets up the grid nicely for the championship battle. It managed to stay dry and still keep us guessing.
Free Practice 3
Alonso repeated his success of yesterday by popping his Renault onto the top of the timesheets in the dying moments of the session, although all eyes were on the McLaren / Ferrari battle - which Hamilton won.
Qualifying
Lots of surprises in store today, with some drivers failing to live up to the crowds expectations, some failing to live up to their own expectations, and some completely surpassing ours.
Conclusions
Many, many teams seem to be disappointed with their day's work, and only Vettel admitted to having fun out on track today. It's been a long season and this is the last race in what has been an incredibly tight competition. As Massa said, anything can happen.

LOL "Where did Trulli come from?!" :D
Hmm, Accuweather still has thunderstorms from 3pm until 5pm, which means that according to that forecast it will rain all race. But it looks like just sudden storms rather than just a build up from a small drizzle. 2pm show it just being cloudy and then immeadiate thunder and lightning for 2 hours. I'm hoping we get some kind of rain at least. It will help Hamilton out for sure and Ferrari......well, we've seen what they're like in those conditions :P
Thank you, thank you.
Wonder why it doesn't allow + in my name?
Ah + is complicated in web addresses.
never tried it.
i think we need a wiki for bugs?
wiki solves all.
Certainly solves my laundry folding problems :)
Sounds like a plan.
I wonder whether it's best just to incorporate it into the current wetpaint one. Simply because people already know where it is and go there for other reasons.
Absolutely. Is there anything it can't do?
http://sidepod...com/page/Website+Bugs
Oh lord, it's getting even worse.
Fingers crossed there's nothing to put in the Sunday section. :???:
christine thankfully solved that one though. panic over :)
i'm expecting a call from bernie tomorrow, saying that we're invading his personal playset and we have to stop.
pretty much everything else has happened.
Lets hope for a good day tomorrow!
I am hopeful! It's going to be a lot of broadcasting on your part!
So a good idea to get a good night's rest! (I'll stop being parental when you start behaving yourself young man! - JOKE!)
Good morning everyone. :) Hehehe.
Morning Journeyer.
Looks like everyone went to sleep. Wow I must have been on to something there!
What with my liking carrot cake and telling people to go to bed I must be very dad like!
I'll be telling people to eat their greens and finish their homework soon if I'm not careful.
I'm trying to finish all my work we kick off today. what time is the parade lap starting today?
This is correct right?
Hamilton wins the title if
-Massa wins but Hamilton comes at least fifth
-Massa comes second and Hamilton takes at least two point, arriving 7th of better
-Massa comes third or worse
Massa wins the title if
-he wins the race and Hamilton does not come in the first five places
-he places second and Hamilton if 8th place or worse.
Italian papers this morning are running the headlines obviously pro-Massa.
my favourite is "Sao Pole".
others have lines iike "Massa flying, Hamilton slowing.". They are calling Trulli'S 2nd extraordinary (aren't we all)
parade lap at 2pm GMT. i really should listen to the show before i post :)
2pm UK time.
I should read all of your comments before I reply!
Will we be having a live feed again?
We better be, otherwise I'll leave the computers and go watch the italian tv where I have little idea what they are talking about.
Yes.
Good morning all, just thought I'd pop in to say hi.
Good morning. I'm about to have a Danish Danish and a Coffee.
morning RG :)
think i might go find an Italian Danish later. nice idea.
What are you doing in Italy by the way?
Good news everyone (Bad for me), my football has been cancelled so I have more time to spend with you.
Mweh, thats boring, I'm going out :D
Is everyone saving their best conversation for the parade lap then :-P
Morning everyone. Well, here we are at last - D-Day. :D
Morning Scott. Any news for us?
Officially, I came here to work - as a geneticist, a gene hunter, if you will. Unofficially, I moved from Australia so I could watch formula one at a reasonable hour of the day.
I'm pacing myself :)
Is BitTorrent your English-TV friend then or do you have a UK Sky Box?
Hehe. I was such a mum last night. Told him: "Don't get talking on that identica thingy, you need an early night."
And then he started lots of conversations, and time was ticking on, and I got to use the best phrase a woman has in her arsenal: "I told you so."
:D
What's 'identica'?
3 hours to Parade Lap, then. Makes the waiting easier to bear. :) In the meantime, I'm watching a wet race! The 2000 European GP. Ah, the days when Ferrari were better in the wet; where have they gone?
identi.ca
Look under soundbytes on the right side of the window, towards the top of the page.
BBC Five Live might have some (biased and flaky) coverage if you need a fix...
I'm waiting for Felipe to come on and tell us about the weather!
Leite, not Massa. :P
Can't get the iPlayer to work for some reason. Oh well. I'd much rather watch old races anyway. :)
Actually, once I got a digital set top box I found the swiss network (I'm in the north of italy) that show movies with optional english audio. Unfortunately, last night I was trying to watch Syriana (with Clooney/Damon) and while I had english audio, the parts in Farsi were subtitled only in german. The italian movies now are also beginning to show movies with optional audio. I miss english language TV, and that's why I love james allen in all his glory :)
I have the European 07 race on my youtube account if sb is interested
You know what? The F1 coverage is so bad in Denmark I choose to find an ITV feed. I think people in the UK don't know how lucky they are with the F1 coverage they get sometimes!
What's your account? :)
hahahaha!
You have to friend me though
Well for one, Accuweather's forecast has changed overnight. Now instead of thunderstorms, it's predicting it to be just cloudy from 3 till 5pm. Autosport has showers, BBC has heavy showers, Weather.com has rain all day and the World Meteorlogical Organization has rain also.
Scott and Gavin can't you get an english Sky box where you are?
I'm betting that Danish coverage is better than Asian coverage on Star Sports. Lead commentator Steve Slater is 10 times worse than Allen (just ask anyone who's watched him - Wolf, in particular). He doesn't have a fixed partner - some are very good, like Karun Chandhok or Chris Goodwin (Bruno Senna's driver coach), while others are so horrible I don't remember their names.
Journeyer I remember reading an article by an English journalist who joined Steve Slater in the box. He had never commentated anything before and was then instantly broadcasting to the world.
Sounded pretty rum to me!
I didn't friend, but I did subscribe. Done! Thanks. :D
Slater has NO previous experience? Seriously? Darn. I think that English journalist is someone from one of the Haymarket mags (not sure if it's Autosport or another mag). Tim Scott is his name, methinks?
Watching that ITV clip from yesterday with the bits of Murray in it got me going. I know that he made a lot of mistakes but his trousers on fire style always got me in the mood!
Ah no the journalist had no previous experience. No idea about Slater.
And that works?
Hence I think I came into sidepod cast land - so i could find out what was happening. then I found feeds and fellow fans. None of my friends here are big f1 fans. such a pity.
I can. An english speaking colleague has got one, but I tend to be someone that will watch TV regardless of what is on. It's my way of trying to learn the language/s (italian and german) by watching gameshows and things. I've been here 12 months now and I'm doing okay.Just don't ask me to speak :)
Do you watch an ITV feed like us?
Man, less than 3 hours until Parade Lap time. Gonna feel like ages, though.
I did find one thing though - I watched Days of Thunder on TV last night and if and when Lewis wins the title today, I'm tempted to play this as he crossed the line:
http://uk.yout...m/watch?v=KcSu0BQZZMg
:D
Makes sense!
Yup, works perfectly, I see all 19 vids. :)
Nope, we have our own commentary - makes James Allen seem brilliant by comparison.
I'm off to get some lunch/catch some sunshine. see you back in here (or there) for paradelap at 2pm GMT.
Have fun!
I didn't know that :)
Ya think in tonight's panel, half of us will be celebrating one driver's triumph and the other half saying the other was robbed or deserved it or was just unlucky? :P Might be a bit of a divide tonight :P
Yeah I can - no ITV or BBC though.
Most TV programmes in English are broadcast in English with Danish Subtitles. However most sports are broadcast with Danish commentators.
The commentators we have here are the worst kind - multisporters with no proper knowledge of the actual sport they are commentating on. The F1 guys don't even bother going to the track. The football commentators are ok - Brian Laudrup, Jan Molby and Peter Schmeichel...
I look forward to it...
Oh - in the old days when TV2 Denmark actually bothered with a pre-race show, they had Tom Kristensen and Nicolas Kiesa. Both were crap at commentating though.
Here's a dumb fact about Nicolas Kiesa - he took part in a TV show called 'Varm Paa Is' - basically 'Strictly Come Dancing' on Ice and he won it!
You know Helio Castroneves won USA's version of SCD and V8 Supercar driver James Courtney did the Australian one as well :P
Well, if bad luck omens are anything to go by...
England humiliated in the cricket by some Stanford Superstars
England humiliated in the rugby by Australia
So, what does this mean for Englishman Lewis Hamilton?
So do I. Scott and I are probably for the chop having been on two weeks in a row. Me has been on two weeks in a row as well but as he's making a cupcake he should probably be allowed to take part. And Andy has been on two weeks in a row but is hosting so sneaks in too!
I can imagine a good number of people wanting to take part tonight!
That movie rocks!
"He didn't bump ya, he didn't hit ya, he rubbed ya. And rubbing son, is racing!"
I'm trying to get on as it might be my last available slot in a while, since I have school and all.
I am on holiday for two weeks after this one so will be away while Scott hosts and the one after :(
I'm on holiday next week too. Unfortunately it's a family weekend and my father in law hates Lewis Hamilton.
I have had to avoid him this weekend too because he likes to spoil the F1 results when he has seen it and knows I haven't!
before you guys get too carried away, i think we're taking next weekend off too :)
podpanel should then return the following sunday. if that's cool?
will keep that in mind :)
awesome :)
Ah yes. Absence makes the heart grow fonder and all that!
plus we're a bit tired.
And it's important for us all to remember who's actually in charge here: Christine! :)
Understandably!
i never forget that.
You guys have worked so hard all season! Lets hope us fans can give you two a great final race send off!
I should point out that in the 'old days' before we had all of these winter series, I lived on a staple diet of movies like Days of Thunder and old F1 tapes for my fix...
Amen! :)
Given that I'll actually be fully awake this time around this week, I'd want to join tonight's panel. I won't be able to join as often after this (except to host, of course). :)
Same here. Nowadays, we have the winter series AND the F1 blogosphere that never really goes away. :)
I know I've been on podpanel for the past 2 weeks, but I'd still like to be on the provisional list and then if need be you can just bump me if we get more than 6 people wanting to take part :) Hope that's OK with everyone. I don't wanna sound like I'm being selfish or anything :)
I would love to be on the panel tonight...
Well me too... :)
So if it does rain today the David CoolCam will be really really awesome!
Awesome name - put it on the wiki!
ok, we have ollie and lou also.
haven't heard from andy yet. just in case, do you happen to have a standby set of host questions at the ready?
just case like.
just [in] case.
erm, not really since I was expecting andy to do it, but I can whip some up post race if Andy doesn't show :)
So what's the schedule tonight - is the show after the race followed by the panel?
you're a star.
I remember saying last week that I would have preferred the podpannel be recorded on Monday. But I realised earlier in the week that it is Katherine and my Anniversary tomorrow. So it's probably best that I'm not spending tomorrow night in front of the computer! :)
I could so easily have got in so much trouble!
From my understanding, our sched is:
5 PM: Brazil GP
8 PM: TG Live Commenting
9 PM: Show, followed by Panel
Is that right?
race / top gear / debrief / panel.
i think we're live commenting top gear too :)
Good thing you caught yourself in the nick of time, then. :P
Mmm, I have crumpets :D
bingo :)
yup, what i said. :P
Will we have an embed feed for that? I'm not from the UK. :P
Man, you guys are dedicated ;-)
will try our bestest. never looked before, but fingers crossed.
you mean mental?
how are you getting on with the cupcake? ;)
That too!
No, obsessed :-)
gonna do it live (ish).
Given TG's wide non-UK audience, I think we can get good odds on finding a feed. :)
It is the key question of the day!
I see Me in here playing on the computer and no Christine... Very suspicious if you ask me!
:)
you're gonna do it live(ish)... hmm intriguing, can't wait :)
So we're gonna hear Me go AAARGH! when he burns himself on the oven tray :P
Morning/afternoon everyone btw :)
i love the way that everyone turns up 2 hours early ;)
Yeah it will be Chinese-style live... he'll only broadcast what happens if it's successful :-p
Before Me can say anything non-family-friendly, the "Please Stand By" sign will come right up, along with background music. :P
heheheee!
:D
mmm... sausages for lunch :-)
And that actually that's 5 hours early for the race itself!
I'm passing the time by watching downloaded football highlights and keeping my eye on here too...
I'm watching Like Mike on ITV just to pass the time :P Quite funny :)
I am passing the time by... actually what am I doing?
Is the the one with 'small woofy' in it?
same here :)
haha, yeah
Check out the new thread, that'll keep you busy for five minutes :)
http://www.sid...-baking-for-the-race/
I'm passing the time by listening to some music, and doing some work. :/
Working on a Sunday? What are you doing?
Hi All
I'm at work until 1730 then will be rushing home to watch the GP on the PVR box. I'll try and catch up before the end of the race (can skip the breaks), but won't join in live comments until I have.
I'm definitely on for hosting tonight's pod panel/cook along. I have some questions already and the rest will come out of the result, reaction and possibly even Top Gear.
For the panellists - please have your suggestions for films/songs/tv shows/books suitable for a modern Formula One driver (example for Massa -"You Spin Me Right Round", DC - "Crash") Hopefully you get the idea.
ooh that's a very "Fighting Talk" question!!!
A lot of you work on Sundays here...
Me too! I'm multitasking. That's how come I was on the podpanel last week - working on a sunday night and just was listening away and heard Ollie drop out and thought, what's the best way to procrastinate for an hour or two...
Sorry - changed the name on one computer but forgot about the other one...
I'm off to the baking thread now...
