The penultimate round of the 2008 Formula 1 season beckons, and it could hardly be closer at the front. With three drivers still in contention for the WDC crown, Sidepodcast takes a look at the current state of play as another dramatic championship draws to a close.
As ever, we take a look around every corner of the Shanghai International Circuit, get Nico's thoughts on the chances of overtaking and look back at the thrilling race we witnessed last year.
Special thanks go out to Allianz SE, AT&T Williams and RTV GmbH for the use of their video footage.

Excellent as always.
Watching that made me think back to those issues you were having with Youtube about them thinking you'd stolen Motors TV's content. I've had an idea which I wasn't sure about putting to you guys since I didn't know what you'd think of it.
In the future, I am looking to get a desktop PC with a good enough spec to play games at a proper frame rate. Much smoother than I have been able to do on my laptop I'm using now or others I've used in the past. Anyway, the games I'm interesting in playing are of course racing games.
Now recently, I've been thinking of producing my own track guides using games like rFactor and GTR2 and using a 2008 F1 mod. I'm inclined to go with the GTR2 version as that one has better moving arms. Anyway, I would be starting of with F1 circuits, going through the calendar from Melbourne to Abu Dhabi (when someone actually comes round to releasing it as an add-on.)
What I'd been thinking is that if you guys wanted to avoid Youtube bothering you again about content use is whether or not you'd want me to record say an onboard lap of myself going round Melbourne or whichever circuit it is and you could use that instead. I would understand that in contrast to Allianz's work, graphically it might not seem exactly the same but it would still be pretty good. You'd be surprised how good some of the simulation racers that are around today look compared to real life.
It was just a thought. You'd be using original content instead of downloading RTV's work and risking getting into a kerfuffle with YouTube. I wasn't sure what you'd make of it to be honest. Plus of course, instead of having to wait until whenever RTV decide to put the footage up, I'd be able to get it uploaded onto drop.io whenever you'd require it.
It's your podcast at the end of the day, I don't wanna seem like I'm intruding into the whole process of making these shows, as they are fantastic as they are now. It was just a thought I had in my head and I decided to share it with you. :)
it's all good ideas sir, i likes your thinking.
i've no idea what the rights are for re-broadcasting gtr2, but i'm assuming they're not free?
the other question is... what are our plans for next year's inside track and at the moment we honestly don't know.
right now, we're concentrating on the end of this season, but i can tell you that making these videos during back-to-back race weekends is very hard work. maybe we'll do something completely different for '09, not sure?
Just a quick question, will you be continuing the Debrief podcasts throughout the winter? Or will ye be havin a wee break for now?
A break? What's that?
After Brazil, a rest in shows?
i think what christine is suggesting, is that there will be no rest for the wicked, and therefore the live debrief will continue.
in what form, and how frequently is probably open to discussion though.
last year we didn't appear to stop at all.
Okay, gotcha.
I can go to sleep knowing that I will get my weekly/fortnightly/monthly f1 podcast post/pre season.
oh dear. we really do have branding issues :D
A simple search of GTR2 on YouTube will show that anyone with a decent enough system does it anyway :P Heck, ITV even used a Playstation back when they first started in 1997 for their track guides.
For an example of what a lap might look like, take a look see here :P

OK, it's more than one lap, but watching it in HQ shows just how realistic a computer game can look compared to real life. Plus it was the best one I could find which gave good viewing of the moving arms :D
If I was to do a lap, I might consider keeping the digital speedo in the shot in the bottom right. The other stuff on screen is from an external add-on for readouts and stuff while driving. My version would just have the speedo in the bottom right and the rest of the screen free of anything for a nice clear view.
not quite sure that answered my question though did it?
this is how bmw tackle the problem of a single lap preview:

i understand that is some kind of official game, but also i'd imagine they've paid for the rights to use it.
We've got a you tube channel? Man I've got some catching up to do.
I believe rfactor and BMW Sauber are in some sort of partnership, that is why they use it.
ah i see what you mean. hmm, well i do remember there is a youtube sim racing game show called Inside Sim Racing, and one of their guys did a track guide for Monza and how to drive it using another sim called rFactor. My guess is he just created it himself and claimed as his own since, even though it was using someone else's software, he was the one who did the main bit of recording and editing the video together.
I'll send them an e-mail and ask what they did and if they know anything about republishing game footage for other purposes. From what I can tell, there's nothing wrong with it, but I will have a look
EDIT: Having a search on google came up with someone who asked about recording game footage and posting it on youtube. pretty much all of the responses said that as long as your intention isn't to make money from it, it is allowed. To be save, I shall e-mail the game producers, Simbin, and ask for their opinion.
The way I see it myself is - if millions of other people put up game footage and it was illegal, all those videos would have been taken down by now.
Live For Speed also has a BMW Sauber F1 car and a Formula BMW in the game. As for the game they use for the track guides, it is not rFactor, but Sony's F1 Championship Edition for Playstation 3.
interesting r.g. didn't know that.
Indeed, since 2006 they've inculded their F1 car into the game. Obviously, this means the current version includes the F1.08.
