Celebrate Good Times - Come On!

Published

By Christine Blachford

Into our fourth podcast of the day and we're still going strong. This is F1 Debrief, otherwise known as Sidepodcast Weekly, otherwise known as the Sunday Show, otherwise known as... no, I think that's it actually.

We'll be discussing the race we've just witnessed in Italy, but there'll be all the other good stuff as well, such as Good Week / Bad Week, News and Views, and of course, your feedback.

However, the feedback side of things is an ongoing process, and more than ever, we want to hear from you. The Live Commenting is available by clicking the triangle in the corner, and if you're feeling up to it, we want calls via Skype. We'll give out all the details in the show.

We speculated we'd be ready at 9pm, but in true Sidepodcast style, things are ever so slightly behind schedule, so let's say 9:15pm UK time. What's fifteen minutes between friends, eh?

Err, no. Every article I've written for BF1 is still there, that's kinda the point of a blog. *off to check me site for goblins and gremlins...*

Edit: It's all still there, Steven. All 1,200 odd articles, including the Williams post form January. What was the problem you encountered? Error message or something...?

The team have rather helped Nick with his qualifying ISSUES and Mario rather pointedly said they did the same last year when Roberto was struggling and Nick was earning the points. Not sure Roberto and Fernando would be such a good combination remembering Macca's experience with two #1 drivers. If Alonso joins BMW Sauber might be better to keep the more peaceful Nick!

but we're not any more popular here than anyone else. in my book and the best stuff is always in the comments anyway.

There are quite a few sportscar races and touring car races that run all night. There is even a 24 hour race for 2 CVs. All those vehicles have two thing in common headlights and no massive lighting rigs

Not really, but what I DO notice is that Bruno Senna's name isn't even mentioned, while Sebastian Buemi is, as he's Sato's main challenger.

Which probably means one of three things:

    1. Bourdais is on his way out at season's end, with Senna replacing him.
    2. Senna has opted to stay on for 1 more year in GP2.
    3. Senna is already going through the specifics of a contract for a 2009 test seat - possibly with McLaren or BMW.

I've heard the Williams rumours, but given how well Glock and Trulli are doing, I don't see Nakajima getting called up just yet.

i don't really follow gp2, but can someone explain in very simple terms, how man who just got beaten the title by giorgio pantano is f1 material?

another year in gp2 wouldn't hurt him would it?

Well, Pantano's been trying for God knows how long... he's not THAT bad a driver, you know. He was bound to get it right sooner or later, and he did. You don't become a GP2 champ and a Formula 3000 champ if you're no good.

    - ian phillips said on friday he had to sack him from jordan for being useless (although not in so many words)
    - no-one in f1 seems interested, despite his title

i'd argue that he's not that good a driver either. but like i said i don't follow gp2.

here's another angle on senna. what if he enters too soon and messes it up? also, given that f1 hardly ever tests these days, could he not do that and another gp2 season?

Weren't the same things being asked about Lewis Hamilton? Like, "What if he enters too soon and messes it up?" As it turned out, he didn't - he did very well, as a matter of fact.

And given that F1 is entering a new era of regulations come 2009, Senna would have less of a learning curve than if he entered in 2010, for example. If Senna's good enough in 2010, he's probably good enough for 2009.

  • 15/09/2008 at 15:58:08#1272 - Steven Roy said:

It looks to me that the further up the racing ladder Bruno Senna has gone the more convincing he has looked. There is always a big risk that he does another season of GP2 and for whatever reason doesn't get as good results he will drop completely off the radar. Allan McNish before his second season of F3000 was such a hot favourite for the title it was ridiculous.

I never heard anyone say anything other than the guy was world champion material. At the time F3000 was a multi-chassis formula and he drove for the French DAMS team with full Marlboro sponsorship and were effectively the works Lola team. That year Lola built a dog. It was garbage. Honda bad. It was truly awful and he struggled badly through no fault of his own.

He got no offers from F1 and almost disappeared out of racing completely. His career was going nowhere until he was offered a drive in the Porsche championship guest car. All sorts of well known names had driven it and none of them could live with the championship regulars. McNish did what he has always done and impressed massively. On the back of that he got a works Porsche sportscar drive and is now regarded as the best sportscar driver in the world. That extra season of F3000 killed his serious F1 career. Someone who was chosen ahead of his then team mate Mika Hakkinen for the Marlboro F3 drive at the age of 19 never raced an F1 car until he was 32.

Senna needs to go to F1 next year (even as a test driver) or do something else entirely.

The other thing to consider is that Lucas diGrassi who is getting a great write up for nearly beating Senna despite missing the first few races spent the winter developing the car. It was designed around him.

So Senna was up against the guy the car was built around and another with way more experience than anyone was ever supposed to have in that category. So it is reasonable to say he had a much steeper learning curve at the start of the season yet with a little luck could still have come out on top.

If I was Berger I would alread have signed him up. Mateschitz may want a Red Bull driver but what is going to get most publicity for his unnamed energy drink, A Swiss driver no-one has ever heard of or someone with probably the most famous name in the motor racing world? Equally if Berger is after money from Japan no-one was ever more popular there than Ayrton Senna and no-one had a closer association with Honda. I am sure Japanese sponsors would be queuing up to back him. Would Santander want to lose him or would they extend their F1 sponsorship to throw a few million STR's way?

Erm, if anything I think he's much more likely to be at Renault since he is one of their development drivers. Actually, here's a thought - if Alonso leaves for BMW or Honda and Piquet gets the boot, who would be the two guys to replace them? My guess - Grosjean and di Grassi.

Scott, I think he meant that if Grosjean is getting rave reviews, so should Senna because he's winning races and contending for the title in a car designed around someone else.

I think a lot of the musical chairs depend on Alonso. If he picks BMW. Heidfeld moves to Renault. Honda makes the decision to keep both drivers.

If he picks Honda, Heidfeld will keep his seat at BMW. Barachello gets the boot at Honda and possibly moves to retirement or test drive. Renault pick one of Di Grassi or Grosjean.

If he stays at Renault. Then it might be a boring off season.

As for the other seats, I think we might see 4-5 rookies on the grid next year. Also, why does Sato keeps on getting chances? He had his chance in Formula One with mixed results. Especially with as many talented young drivers chomping at the bit and ones who have never recieved a proper chance (like Ant and Franck) why do they keep on picking the guy up? I don't understand that at all.

Honestly, I don't see the Alonso to BMW thing. Sure Heidfeld has been out raced by his teammate for the majority of the season but the man has been consistently in the points and beating people in better machinery like Hekki. So what happens next year if they bring in Alonso and he consistantly out races Kubica? Under the same rubric they are using for Heidfeld, would Kubica's drive be in jeopardy? I really think it would be unwise to spend BMW limited resources on a high-salary, high-demand person like Alonso. Besides,

Sorry if I seem bias, but I like Heidfeld and I think BMW should be grateful for all the loyalty and effort he had made to get that team where they are.

Our local websites are reporting that the other F1 drivers are slamming Lewis' driving at Monza - especially Fernando and Timo.

"There was some unnecessary movements he made," the Spaniard told reporters in his native tongue at Monza, "and he repeated them with Glock and Webber. It is his way of racing."

Toyota's Timo Glock was also not pleased when asked about Hamilton's driving.

"I do not know what he was thinking. I was right next to him but he left me no room. Sometimes he drives as though he is completely alone on the track," the German is quoted as saying by RTL.

"The next time I am with him (on track), I will behave with him in exactly the same way," Glock promised.

    Source: http://www.whe...lam_Hamiltons_driving

This followed the local press' attack on Lewis just before Monza.

    http://www.whe...l_as_rivals_speak_out

As you will note while SA Motoring Editors are rather anti-Hamilton (make that very) the SA public is very divided into two camps.

Interesting that http://www.planetf1.com and http://www.autosport.com/ have not reported the latest attack on Hamilton by other F1 drivers. So I suppose it has not received coverage elsewhere.

On the http://www.formula1.com there is also no mention of these, but in the article about "Peers full of praise for Vettel and Toro Rosso" they have conveniently missed that both Ron and Lewis did actually congratulate Vettel and Toro Rosso (OK Lewis did manage to swing it back to himself but still there is some recognition).

Oh if no one has realised Timo is fairly aggressive and I sure he will return the favour to Lewis if the opportunity comes!

I received it, and I agree with it, to a degree. [Damn] good racing, but at times, Hamilton was a little too pushy. But he played by the (new) rules, so all is fair in love and war, I guess. If Timo ever gets the opportunity again though, and gets a penalty, I'll be emailing the FIA.

Generally speaking, these quotes have received little interest in the UK. Admittedly, the quotes broke quite late in the UK, so maybe Autosport will cover it tomorrow (16th). But in all honesty, the story should've been broken as the race was happening.

No-one has ever been more convonced about Lewis than me but I am amazed that in Brazil they are comparing him to Senna. Re: Scott

I don’t understand that at all.

What I can not figure out is why does everyone think that Barrichello should have the door opened for him and asked to leave when button should be throw out a top floor window.

And then Honda can start looking for a replacment. I mean Button is not Japanese. You can not shame into hara-kari but ssuggesting whtat we Honda can get better results with Taki Inoue, for example.

    RE: Jordan

Good point on Button, after all Barichello has more points this year then Button. The only thing that concerns me with him is Button's contract is more concrete in terms of the length and money that than Barichello. Might create more problems then it is worth.

On the critical non-critical British press angle there were several headlines in Mondays papers which were "Lewis loses".

That really wasn't the story of the weekend. That was pandering. Sometimes Lewis losing is news because he might lose while his rivals are way ahead. But that didn't happen.

The story was Vettel. End. Of.

    Morning all,

Jonny N and I were lamenting that other people are now going to actually bother to turn up to Der Seb's open press calls now. It's the end of an era.

    Thanks Dan.

The thing that amazes me is that everything I discuss in it happened in the space of two weeks. Had the various bits and pieces been more spread out I would robably have treated each as an isolated incident. Since I wrote the article I have found out that Moto GP and the other classes are streamed at
www.bbc.co.uk/sport . This apparently includes all practise and qualifying sessions. I guess this bodes well for F1's channel switch next year.

    Glad you liked the article.

it's probably all misquoted tosh, but a few choice cuts from the man this morning:

    "I’m a fighting force."

"I am not messing around doing stupid things just keeping myself nice and quiet and doing everything right."

"Morally, I think I deserve the title..."

ahh, he brightens up my day.

On the Bruno Senna thing, I suspect that Toro Rosso will try to get him to be their tester and combine it with another GP2 season, but find an excuse to sack whichever race driver is doing worse mid-season to make way for him. Starting in the middle of a season is a lot less pressure than stepping in at the beginning because everyone expects a substitute to be worse than the driver being replaced, at least at the beginning. By 2010, Bruno would have definitely found his feet (assuming he's not worse than Piquet Jr!) and will surprise people in the same way as Robert Kubica and Sebastian Vettel did in 2007.

It's not exactly as if Squadra Toro Rosso have never sacked a driver mid-season before, and I can't imagine Gerhard Berger would be keen to see his mentee in another team unless he seriously believes that there will not be a buyer for Squadra Toro Rosso's other 50%.

    just thinking about it and drawing from my historical knowledge, this season is I think the first time since 1995 where we’ve had at least 3 new winners in the season: {Scott Woodwiss - 121 comments ago}

Scott, there were three new winners in 2003 as well (Raikkonen, Fisichella and Alonso). Still, three new winners in a season is a very rare occurrence.

By the sound of it, Sebastian is a good person to interview (I'm going by Martin Brundle's effusive praise of Sebastian's media conduct towards the end of the race), so hopefully he'll continue to be just as charming when the massed ranks of the media decide he's interesting.

Bit unfortunate for you, though, because I imagine you and Johnny N got some interesting exclusive snippets from the Vettel sessions.

This made me laugh, in an interview on Autosport Jonathan Noble and Giorgio Ascanelli:

    Q. Is it possible to compare the feeling you have to win a race with Toro Rosso as to that of winning with McLaren or Ferrari in the past?

GA: It is like sex. It is never as good as the first time. When sex is good, it is very good. When sex is bad, it is still pretty good! That sums it up pretty much.

    :D
