Choice Cuts from the Festival of Speed 2008

By Mr. C.

As ever, a full audio round up of our adventures at Goodwood will be available soon, but in the meantime here are a few of our favourite photographs taken during the weekend. The remainder will no doubt be available on Flickr shortly.

Jenson Button

After a minor mishap with a forgotten battery during our first run in with Honda's "A Question of Motorsport" quiz, we made damn sure no shots were missed this time around.

Jenson Button at the Festival of Speed on Sunday

Jenson appeared to be in a particularly jovial mood and spent a good hour hanging out in the Honda tent. The team's clothing may look daft on TV, but the colours work well in moderation.

Lewis Hamilton

Getting a decent picture of Hamilton was just as difficult this year as it was back in '07, with organisers trying every trick in the book to manage crowd control.

Lewis Hamilton at the Festival of Speed on Sunday

Although it wasn't wet on Sunday, a lot of the F1 cars chose to use intermediate tyres, presumably because the rally cars peppered the track with greasy mud each time they went up the hill.

Vicki Butler-Henderson

Whilst the girl may have done her best to avoid Sidepodcast during the Grand Prix weekend, preferring to spend time at BMW's Pit Lane Park, there was no getting away this time.

Vicki Butler-Henderson hosts A Question of Motorsport

I have absolutely no idea what Vicki was driving on Sunday, but from the overalls I'm assuming she went up the hill at least once.

McLaren Air Box

McLaren turned up at the festival with a gaggle of cars from various points in their esteemed history. I wish I could give you the technical details, but I wasn't paying a whole heap of attention.

Looking at a McLaren through a McLaren

This is a picture of a reasonably modern McLaren air box, hiding behind an even more recent McLaren chassis, and there ends our history lesson for the day.

I didn't know VB-H was there let alone driving.

The Hakkinen McLaren was an MP4/13. Hamilton drove the MP4/22. In addition they had a couple of very early ones including on with high wings and a Lauda MP4/2, an MP4/4 which was the 88 car that won 15 out of 16 races and was taken out in the lead at Monza. They had the MP4/5 and an MP4/6. Oh and next to the Hakkinen car they had an MP4/21 with Montoya's name on it. You expect to see big difference between the cars of the 70s and 80s but the 13 next to the 21 really showed up the dramatically different appearance of cars over the las ten years.

there was one on static display. something to do with partners "medion mobile" i think.

she arrived at the honda tent a bit of a sweaty mess. either she was driving or they made her run all the way from the rally stage :)

    thank you :)

i should've been paying attention, but i spent a good hour working out if there were any good light reflections i could get off the shiny paintwork.

then lewis came down the hill and i had to run for it.

i know there were quite a few, and it looked remarkably like they were all lifted from the donington collection.

it was just down from the toyota stand. next to what i think was an old williams (turbo era), but i didn't get a picture because it was under a dark roof so couldn't get enough light to make it work.

We must have missed a massive section of the festival, we shouldn't have headed up to the rally stage first. Next time I am going to fully explore all that F1 has to offer before I go anywhere else ;)

After reading this, can we offically change Max's nickanme to Mr. Hanky-Spanky?

Strange things tend to happen at the Festival of Speed. The video shows 12 times world champion motorcycle trials rider Dougie Lampkin taking his bike through Goodwood House. At one point he goes up stairs with his front wheel balanced on the skirting board. The guy is awesome.

BTW: Self Promotion alert: I did the first part of my mid-season review which is up on F1-Pitpass. I hope you enjoy if you take the time to read it.

not as ambitious as f1technical are being, by suggesting that single line quote is worth an entire news story :)

Franck's partner for this weekend's Mid-Ohio race will be Brazilian Indy Lights (GP2 ish) racer Raphael Matos. He will be the permanent partner.

Never heard of him so I don't know if he is any good or not but he is the reigning Fromula Atlantic (think F3 but with decent engines) champion so he must have some ability.

He is going to be a very tired and sore boy by the end of the weekend because as well as the ALMS race he is doing 2 Indy Lights races.

Can someone check to see if he has nicked our TARDIS. There is no other way Toyota will win a chmpionship. Even if they miraculously produce a winning car the odds on Glock coming out on top are not great.

Definitely a low signal-to-noise ratio on that one...

Don't worry - RSPCRF1 has got a spare, plus the facility to grow more.

I'd have to agree with you there. Couldn't they even have put a paragraph or two of their own analysis in there? Either someone at F1 Technical is suffering from "Bored Journalist Syndrome" or the writer wanted to get one more story published before going home for the day. It's not the Pareto Principle because there's enough news floating around for substantial stories.

They are in part two which will be out today (sly bit of promotion.) To be honest, I don't think I have gotten over the week that the staff of the Portland weekly independent newspaper The Mercury let Courtney Taylor-Taylor-Taylor-Taylor be the editor in chief for a month. He was probably one of the worse writers and content editors I have ever seen. The Mercury's staff is still apologizing for that one.

er… is it me…or is Timo Glock being pretty ambitious?

I would also like to take this opportunity to announce that I have a goal by 2027 to bring a championship to bring Team Sidepodcast a world championship.

That would be a record. First PR officer to win a world championship in his own right. Like your ambition :)

I want to be clear, I said I would bring a championship to Team Sidepodcast, not win one. If anyone from McLaren comes around ask who broke into their trophy case, tell them we think it was Honda.

I thought our Steven picked up the hardware in 2010, with the toys I added to his car, I wonder if Glock managed to pass Steven....So the question is does Steven use the oil slick on Glock or is Steven really evil and first uses the smokescreen, then the oil slick.

I would also like to take this opportunity to announce that I have a goal by 2027 to bring a championship to bring Team Sidepodcast a world championship

Boy if that's the case, specially with Steven raking up a bunch of Driver's Championships by then, maybe we should replace Scott with Franck now.....

    The Glock is ticking

So Dan, is this the first documented case of a Glock misfiring?

Red Bull factory encountered an 'incident' today involving a new component they were testing. The best bit of that (brief) article is this:

Aussie driver Mark Webber was seen looking visibly grumpy.
