Thermal Imaging
Published

As very kindly pointed out by Kathi during live commenting earlier, FOM appeared to be trialling a new type of camera in the pitlane today.
Displayed without any fanfare (and completely missed by us) was this shot of Nico Rosberg refueling during qualifying this afternoon:

That seems like a pretty handy thing to have around, and you can easily see the engine venting is the toastiest area of the car, glowing white hot in the screenshot.
I'm surprised at how warm the tyres are in comparison to the engine, and it looks like the lower cross-section of the rear wing has taken a bit of a hammering from the engine exhaust.
Kathi has kindly uploaded a high quality clip if you fancy seeing it in action.

That refuelling man looks pretty hot as well.
I really want to see this in the race tomorrow! I hope they keep it!
yeah, but you fancy anything in a nomex suit.
It reminds me of thermal imaging that the vet has used on my horse to look for problem areas...
Great stuff...
ha! maybe a little too much information there.
does anyone know if ITV showed this at all? did they happen to be on a break at the time?
i think it was shown on the internet feed....cause i caught th press confirence on the internet and at the end (when they show the replys) there was the thermal image...so they may hvae been on a break yeah.
i posted a link on drop.io ;) not particulary the most thrilling piece of news...
i saw it :)
can't say i pay a whole heap of attention to haircuts, but the timing is spooky!
lol it is...its also kinda sad that the drivers are not able to dress as they like and be individuals.
How do you get drop.io to look at something someone else has dropped in?
You just go to http://www.drop.io/sidepodcast and they should be there...at last they are for me...and you click on the image or whatever... :D
erm, not sure i understand the question there alianora?
Wow, who knew that the Predator was at the race track. I wonder if the Governor of California, the former Governor of Minnesota, a former candidate for Governor of Kentucky, and Apollo Creed are going to be on hand as well?
If they think Sebastian Loeb was scruffy - what would they make of James Hunt - who expressly had it stipulated in his contract that he would NOT be expected to wear suits or smoke his sponsor's brands of fags.
ahaha really? love it! I never knew that....thanks Rich!
ooh, that could be a solution to the problem of james allen.
Maybe that's a race where we want Max at.
((Note, sorry about the double post "Predator", it when I hit post on the first one, it didn't go through for a couple minutes.)
Thanks Lou some more on Hunt. When he booked at fancy Mayfair restuarants he would take his dog OSCAR as his dining companion. He famously wore a badge on his racing overalls that read Sex - Breakfast of Champions.
I miss characters like Hunt, apparently Kimi is a huge admirer of the "Hunt the Shunt" - he entered and won a snowmobile event under the name James Hunt.
Can you imagine a modern driver doing the following...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Hunt
:D thanks for the info Rich! Brilliant! ahaha oh i wish we had more characters like that! Or at least the drivers where allowed to have a beard if they wanted....i don't understand why Max and Ron Dennis hate beards, they can look good! :D
no probs, the spam filter baulked at the number of links you included, have removed your duplicate, hope that's okay.
there are a couple of people we could line up for meet & greet with the predator, should we compile a list?
i grow a beard specifically to annoy ron. i'm not sure he takes much notice though :(
You have a beard? ooo if only we could see it :P
that might be why ron hasn't noticed now i come to think of it.
yay lists! you can never have too many lists!
you know, i think you may be right :P is ita very long beard?
ah, go on, it's too early to sleep anyhow. top 5 then:
1. james allen - for never acknowledging a single complaint about his abilities
2. max - for so many reasons, but mostly for introducing grooved tyres
3. bernie - for inflicting tamara on us
4. mike coughlan - for ruining a great f1 season
5. schumi - for those pink, gaudy, flowery shirts... there's just no need.
The thermal imaging is fabulous. It is amazing how much hotter the inside edg of the front tyres look that the rest of the tyre.
I met Hunt in the early 80s at a Marlboro competition at Silverstone. He was there to present prizes. Possibly the single least impressive human being I have ever met. He had this dopey dog with him. I think it was an Alsation. It walked around behind him and every time he stopped it just dropped like all four legs had given way.
ahaha brilliant! lol Would ahve thought Schumi would ahve been further up given your dislike for the man :P lol ok my top 5
1.james allen - i agree, also for the sheer stupidity he showed today by refering to Heikki as Rubens and never correcting himself!
2. Bernie - for wanting all the money he can get!
3. Max - for refusing to step down and walk away, also for making stupic comments about drivers and making Jenson get rid of his beard...
3. Ron Dennis and his stupid PR stunts (im not a hamilton fan but come on! that was stupid!)
4. Steve Rider - do i relly need a reason?
5. Tamara - for that interview with the ferrari boys while skiing! (it was just her getting a free holiday from her dad!)
:P
aww that is soo cute!
good spot. presumably that's caused because they're effectively the rear brake cooling?
might that shed a little light on why a bad paint job caused kovi's accident in spain too?
i really was, wasn't it :)
Rumour has it last year that Fernando did exactly that, grew a scruffy beard and wore faded shirts to annoy uncle Ron! He soon shaved it off though!
Im confused again, and have been about this for awhile....how did the bad paint job cause Kovi's crash? or is that what you are saying....i have not really read much f1 news in the past week so everything seems abit more confusing. sorry if its annoying :)
http://www.aut...s/report.php/id/67211
now i don't really understand that either, and to further confuse things f1.com says this:
http://www.for...cal/2008/791/532.html
which isn't the same thing at all is it? unless the lacquer was thick enough to cause rubbing... maybe.
That was funny, it reminded me of 2005/6 when he was at renault with the long scruffy hair! although the beard did suit him! beards/ stubble seems to suit f1 drivers at the moment :)
Oscar was a German Shepherd - the Brits only started calling them Alsations during the war period.
the outer clamp surface of the wheel was given a clear lacquer coating? forgive me i no nothing about the manufacturing of wheels and their clamps....was it not ment to be coated in a clear laquer?
Nope! :D as usual thanks for your help ;) I it makes abit more sence... :D
did we? wow another fact i never knew that....do you know why?
Presumably no-one wanted anything German and Alsace has swapped between Germany and France a few times so Alsatian could be claimed to be French and not German
that makes a great deal of sence! :) thanks, wow its not only f1 you learn about on sidepodcast ;)
I can't find out what the clamp surface is. I have seen it said to be the bit where the tyre sidewall touches the wheel and also the bit where the wheelnut touches the wheel. It may be something entirely different.
Assuming it is where the wheelnut contacts then lacquer could cause a problem because instead of metal locking on to metal it would have a layer of lacquer in the middle which would deform or crack under load causing a vibration. Although I haven't seen anything to say Heikki reported a vibration.
Speaking of learning aren't you meant to be studying now?
me? lol erm technically i should be asleep....but yeah i suppose i could revise physics or latin... but have been doing it all day!
That would make a whole load of sence!!! :D
For Lou - and other Jenson fans I loaded to the drop.io site a photo of my scruffy dog watching a Sidepodcast video featuring man of the moment. She is a also a Christine fan!
That is a good piont, tomorrow i need to make sure i get back to revision right after live commenting ends. After the last race i was abit reluctant to go....but i have physics on monday afternoon so i really must! I would appreciate a gentle nugde/ reminder from someone if i am stil around much after live commenting ;)
Rich,
:D aww your dog is soo cute! this was the dog you mentioned earlier this week in one of the other posts? Im alreadying loving drop.io!
rich, forgot to say, thank you for sending those pics, quite made our day :)
consider it done, and remember there are plenty more races this season, but only 1 (probably) physics exam.
the races provide me with a restbite from revision if you like. and thanks ;) sometimes i need the encouragement to get up and revise....specially after a race, or when its lovely weather ;) yep your right just the one physics exam. the last one, the 3rd and final module! argh! i will be pleased when i take that exam and don't have to take the subject anymore. Wish there were f1 exams - would be nicer to revise for :P
Remember all points on the body work with maximum downforce will also heat up - as you put pressure on air it heats - so in this picture the hotter parts of bodywork are literally windows to aerodynamic soul of the car. The winglets seem to also being quite a bit of work. Fascinating picture and thanks Kathi for putting up the video.
