As Heard on Radio 5 Live
Published
By Mr. C.
Amongst all the chaos of the back-to-back races we've just enjoyed, Christine somehow managed to fit in an interview about Sidepodcast for BBC's Radio Five Live. The show, called For the Love of Pod was broadcast in the UK yesterday (Easter bank holiday Monday) and discussed the world of podcasts and podcasting.
Presented by Radio 1's Colin Murray, and featuring the likes of podcasting stalwarts Ask a Ninja and Adam Curry, the hour long show took a look at how podcasting is changing the way we consume media and how it might shape broadcasting in the future.
Christine managed to take up almost two minutes of prime BBC air time, which is a pretty impressive feat considering who else was on the bill.
Here are some of the the best bits of her interview:
Hopefully we won't get into too much trouble for playing that. To redeem ourselves slightly, might we suggest that the full show can be downloaded as part of the Pod's and Blogs podcast, and we encourage you to listen to the whole thing.
We have to say a massive thank you to FiveLive (really I don't know the correct way of writing that name, can you tell?), although possibly not so much for playing a clip of the very first show we ever recorded - which was honestly quite embarrassing.
If you have chance to listen, feel free to leave us comments and thoughts about the show.

From what I can tell, it's BBC Radio 5 live.
Number 5, little l.
Although even the BBC aren't consistent, so I wouldn't be too worried.
So just out of interest how many people download on average each podcast?
it varies wildy actually. video's are three times as popular as the audio shows, and of all the audio shows we do, the sunday show is the least downloaded of them all (haven't looked at the figures for F1 Digest yet, it's too new).
oddly though, it's the least popular show that the generates the most feedback! by comparison we get a limited response from Sidepodcast TV or from a one-off series like F1 History.
some stats are available here, and more numbers are here. it's about time we updated them though. we'll have to do a couple of posts soon.
i think the date christine was talking about was just over a year ago. it took what seemed like forever to get to 100 regular listeners, but after that it's just snowballed.
Oh My, Christine is famous: she'll never speak to us hoi polloi again.......

I think the BBC are brave letting her on the air. If her previous record is anything to go by she will be running their F1 coverage by next season.
Which is by no means a bad thing!! ;)
"she will be running their F1 coverage by next season."
Christine,
It would not surprise me one bit, they are looking for accomplished presenters, and there is a dearth of finely honed faces out there.
She loves F1, so the enthusiasm would shine through, and that is what works like nothing else on telly.
Brilliant idea, how about it Madam Christine?
brendan
You are all too kind.
But I wouldn't want to abandon my lovely Sidepodcast friends :)
Christine,
I'm real glad we got the highlights here: the podcast from the pod people was dreadful, (for me). I listened in vain for some sense and it was all posture. Congratulations for going through what must have been quite an ordeal.
You were intelligent, balanced and direct.....what a lovely, rare thing that is on the radio these days. You coruscate and light the road. You're a rare talent, gurl:)
brendan
Thanks Brendan,
I just think they had a tough time picking a target audience - if you're a podcast fan you already know all that stuff, and if you're new to podcasting, then it was probably a bit too much to take in.
It's a hard balance to strike, I think.
Just think about the great oppitunities! You would get to travel (think of that Monaco GP and all the others for that matter!!) AND you would get to talk to Jenson and Seb B all the time!! how great would that be?!
but we could never do without you!
the problem also, is that despite everybody's best efforts, there's a certain amount of interest in getting across the idea that:
independent = amateur = not worthy
because almost everybody on the show has income to lose to the rise of the independent podcaster.
i'm sure it's not entirely coincidental which clip was chosen to represent sidepodcast, nor was it coincidental that colin chose not to answer christine's point that:
after he claimed we just "slag off formula 1 drivers"
the thing is, we were given an opportunity for some brilliant exposure and therefore we cannot complain in any way shape or form. the beeb clearly went out of their way to offer some kind of balance, but if we were in the studio we could've argued against almost every single point that was put forward.
maybe we'll do a post about it in the future or something.
Very nice of BBC, aye?
By the way, guys, if you want to get involved in F1 here's some good news for you:
McLaren boss Ron Dennis has always enjoyed the concept of inspiring others to follow their dreams. It was this concept that led him to include an educational area in the McLaren Technical Centre in Woking and is behind a new charitable foundation that he has now launched (albeit quietly) called Dream Chasing. The intention is to find talented youngsters who are having trouble fulfilling their ambitions because of lack of funding and enabling them them to achieve their dreams. Dennis has drawn some of the inspiration for the idea from Lewis Hamilton.
"It is really about mentoring and financing young people from all walks of life in all countries to aspire and succeed in their own dreams," he says. "When you meet terminally-ill adults or even more so children, it gives you a complete perspective on what your own problems are," Dennis says. "There are many, many hundreds, probably millions, of people who are facing a more challenging life than I am."

Your humble servant will apply on the grounds of being paranoid schizophrenic who wants to report from F1 races. Do you think it will work?
"maybe we’ll do a post about it in the future or something."
Me,
I'd look forward to that: absolutely agree with the rest of your post.

Hi, I don't suppose you have the complete mp3 of The Love of Pod?
